I will be chronicalling the build of my Tramp Steamer in this directory as recommended. As a refresh, I am converting a Milford Star kit to a funcky Tramp Steamer that is coming from my mind and some research on the internet. Always wanted to have a static display model of this type and plan to bring in fun details, etc. I'm having a blast so far and a fun time eater during my retirement.
Best regards,

Might i suggest that you make provision to be able to sail it? This model does sail well. By at least putting in
prop shaft an rudder control, you could always sail if wished. John.
-
Although this model will be a static display, the shaft, stuffing box and rudder are installed and she could be converted to RC if I ever got the urge. I have done both sail and power RC boats and just wanted a fun display piece this time.

Dennis

Making progress. Bridge has been a challenge... I had window frames popping out all over the place. things have settled down for now. I have extended the flying bridge and plan to add some detail inside the bridge for fun. At least I'll know its there.

Dennis you have made a really good start there and as you are working from your own ideas no rivet counter
can tell you its wrong. Keep the pictures coming.

Stack is in and rigged. Bridge is almost there. Got the name on and port of call. I'm happy.

You're doing a great job there, Dennis, it's looking really nice :-))
Peter.

Thanks Peter for the kind words. I am so impressed with the outstanding work you folks do... mine pales in comparism. As I approach the end of the build, I'm wanting to add in some weathering... mainly rust. What is recommended and is it dry brushed on or painted..? I know it can be somewhat overdone (like anything).. but I think weathering is in order.

Dennis

Rigging is done on the main mast, booms are in and cargo net installed. Turned out about like I'd had hoped.

Dennis,
I love the look of your boat, really nice modelling, great detail and evocative colours, but have a word with those stevedores loading the net will you?
Chris
-
Tks Chris... yes, I have the deck crew covered.. don't know if you can see them, but I have two small cannons mounted on the bridge rail on each corner, just to keep things in order. (I do have figurenes on order... coming)
Cheers,
Dennis

Ok, I just was not happy with the cargo net idea, so I'm trying a pallet rig.. I think it looks better.

Main mast is in and rigged, added flag (Samoa) and Port nav light. I'm debating what to do with the mizzen. Some steamers had mizzens, but most had an aft boom. I'm thinking about making it a small lifting boom.. there is no cargo hold in that aft area, but I think a lifting boom would be appropriate. Nearing completion of this build, just have life boat to install and radio antenna to add and figurenes.

Well folks, I've finally finished my static build of an Old Tramp Steamer. It was a real joy to do and satisfied my longing for an old tramp steamer. I'm happy with the outcome. I've enjoyed my time here on this forum and you dear folks have stirred the interest to return to RC sailing. Perhaps another old steamer. For now, I'm off to builld real boats for the summer.
I'm not pleased with the pictures, the lighting just was not right, but I think you will get the idea.
Best regards, fairwinds and smooth seas!
