The award winning redevelopment of the areas around the canals in Birmingham is a great improvement on the derelict warehouses that were left behind from that great working age. Birmingham is a great city with a great past but has done a wonderful job in taking its canals from a neglected industrial relic and transforming them and giving them a new less of life.

Yes Brum has changed a lot in that area - my youngest brother used to keep his narrowboat in Gas Street Basin until
he moved it rural down to Crick. Though the area has improved I think I prefer the peace and quiet of Crick. Spent
half the afternoon watching the kingfishers on the Grand Union Canal.

remember tying up in a basin in brum, 1982, after we'd knocked the rudder off it's pintol,...........strode off to find the nearest hostelry and a bag of chips.....take this turn and that turn, you'll come across a big brick wall and a pub called the Acorn said a local walking his dog!.....oh said we...the Acorn.........sounds like a nice country pub.says one of the crew.......
the big brick wall was Winson Green high security prison, and the "country pub" the Acorn was the first port of call for long termers who had just been released, lol.
the pub was a perfect cocophany of noise and competition between the juke box, numerous gaming machines [ no doubt all illegal as they were giving cash prizes] and the TV blaring away the news of the Falklands war live as it happened.
when the asian brummy/irish accented landlord asked us what we were doing in the area, and we told him that we'd left our narrow boat at the canal he tutted through hissing teath.we knew we were in trouble..........we asked if the boat would be stolen......nah lad, they'll just sink it.
as one of the female crew commented.......the bog's not up to standard....there's only the sun for toilet paper.....not even folded telegraph...............you know, it was one of the best and freindliest nights that we ever had on the boat......and it was still there when we got back, lol {-) {-) {-) {-)

hi Larry,
nice narrow boat there mate.
why you go to bath to sail it? nice pond mind. how about eastville lake?
thats where I was thinking of trying out my PT boat when finished
regards
don
-
HI DON, reason for not using eastville is parking and not a nice place for old fokes to many dodgy persons and crack heads, also BATH IS CLOSER .
and i no the depth of pool and easy access, CHEERS LARRY.
-
very nice narrowboat there, deffiently something id like to have a go at building
and got to say gas street is one of the least desirable parts of the canal network i have visited, and that little boat bus clearly has no respect for the 4mph speed limit as can often be seen leaving a large wake behind it
-
MR SAM, HELLO , thank you you should have seen gas st when i was kid in brum , theres no raw sewage in in it now or factory discharge,
it was a great play ground, got my fist bike out of there , and made it into a cycle speedway bike , used to race on bomb site race tracks there was a big following in
brum in them days the brummies speedway team at perrybarr stadium was agood night out, HAPPY DAYS no stupid health and safety or nanny state
i came through ok ,........LARRY.... :-))
-
love watching the speedway on the tv still not actually been to watch it though even though my local town Leicester has recently got itself a speedway team again
ive pulled one of my boats apart so have a nice little motor and speed controller to start a narrowboat project next
-
HI SAM, its Larry here what plan are you going to use for narrow boat?
