Title: Dive-in to Summer June 11th and 12th 2011
Post by: Subculture on April 22, 2011, 08:34:31 pm
As we are only a few weeks away from this event, it's timely to remind those interested. Thanks to the cooperation of St Albans Sub Aqua Club (http://www.sasac.co.uk), our gracious hosts, the 2011 Summer Dive-in, which will be the third Summer event, will take place for a WHOLE weekend on Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th June 2011, from 10am until 4pm both days. That's a full 12 hours of crystal clear water to sail your sub in, with the addition of a licensed bar and clubhouse plus free on-site parking.

Those of you who have attended previous events at this venue, know what a nice facility it is. For those who have yet to attend a Summer Dive-in, the St Albans venue is equipped with a 100ftx60ft swimming pool with a 9ft deep end, and we get exclusive use. That's large enough for all but the biggest of boats, but to give you an idea at the last event, two engel typhoons were happily simultaneously swimming around the pool.

This pool is filled during the Summer months where the sub aqua club use it for training, suit testing and social events. It has minimal chlorine content, and as our event is near the start of Summer, the water is as clear as gin.

There is usually a tame scuba diver on hand to recover any boats that run into trouble.

For those who may be coming some distance, you may wish to stay locally overnight. St Albans is a very nice place to stay, very historic, with beautiful parkland and excellent shopping facilities.

It is quick and simple to travel in to the heart of London via rail, and is close to two motorways (M1 and M25) so is easy to reach by car.

Here is the location on Google Maps-
http://www.google.co.uk/maps/place?cid=8029491325922838352&q=st+albans+sub+aqua+club&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=sub+aqua+club&hnear=City+of+St+Albans,+Hertfordshire

You can read more about St Albans itself on wikipedia- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Albans

There is a small charge to attend of £10 for two days or £6 per day, with a nominal £1 for those spectating only. The price comes down if the numbers increase, as this is non-profit making event.  I appreciate advance payment where possible, as it makes life simpler for me on the day and allows me to budget. I can receive payment via personal cheque, or Paypal, but please don't send cash, as this can easily get lost in the post and also makes refunds difficult.

If you want any more details, or I have missed something out, please don't hesitate to get in touch via this site, facebook, the Dive-in website, or via my email address which is shown in the attached flyer.

So far numbers are suggesting this years event will be the best attended yet. Last years event attracted about twenty people with close to 30 boats on display.

Please make a note of our website http://www.diveintomodelsubmarines.co.uk which shows videos and pictures from past events, and also our facebook page, which is open to anyone which has similar content and also allows feedback from those who attend http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=133360626703083

Would recommend it to anyone interested, went last year and had a fantastic time.

I'll try to attend this time, but seeing as I've moved to Wales may be a little hard. Still, there may well be something a little huge coming....

Excellent, 30 subs - I think you should call it a Subfest! I dont think my sub will be ready in time, but I may make the trip as a spectator. Anyone bringing an Engel Lafayette along that I could have a look at?

I'm DEFINATELY bringing the Vanguard!! Realy looking forward to seeing how it performs in a pool  - emphasis on the "seeing" as my local lake is a tad murky and makes diveing a bit buttock clenching!
See you there,

This sounds great !  I intend going Sunday (I work Saturdays).  No sub this year, still on the stocks, but I hope to learn a lot.  I may even be incredibly lucky and see a working K Class, but looking forward to seeing submariner expertise in all varieties.

Don't think you'll see a K-class, I know of only two models of that boat in the UK, and they're both based in the North somewhere. However there'll be lots of models for you to take a gander at. I expect Sunday to have the largest attendance.

Thank you Andy.  Seeing lots of subs will be great, and hopefully I can pick up many hints and tips to help me commission mine. At least avoid the more obvious pitfalls.
"I know of only two models of that boat in the UK" -  Wow, I did not know they were that rare, which gives me huge incentive.  I guarantee there will be one more before Dive-in to Summer 2012.

Great stuff! For those of you coming down from North of St Albans, please be aware that on the Sunday is the annual city half marathon takes place, so it's best to approach the venue from the South of St Albans, as some of the roads get closed off. Note that this on the Sunday ONLY.

That's a scum line. Depending on the waters the boat operates in, that line may also include algae growth, so you can add some green into that too. Dave Merriman is a master at this sort of weathering.

Here is what the pool looked like last night. Clear as a bell. SASAC have switched the tap back on to fill it up the last few inches for the weekend- the pool leaks a bit, well it is over a 100 years old!

By The way, Subculture, what time will it be open on Sunday Morning? In view of the race you spoke of I aim to get there first thing, to beat the traffic but also to take advantage of the putting the Vanguard in a pool!

Looks like good weathering to me.

That one in the dry dock has prompted another thought in my head...where are the flood holes?  How do these apparently well sealed modern submarines dive, especially crash dive?

David

Post by: Subculture on June 09, 2011, 11:46:28 am
The event officially starts at 10am in the morning, but I' will be there from about 9.00am both days, as some people turn up early, and I have to set up the road signs, tables and chairs etc. We finish up at about 4pm.

I do recommend people bring a hat and suncream or some sort of shade. The slightest bit of sunshine and it soon warms up poolside, and you will catch the sun.

Also please try to be considerate of others when parking. We have space for quite a number of cars, but please park in a compact fashion so that everyone can get in. There is some free parking out on the road if we get inundated!

Regarding David's question, modern submarines do not crash dive. They have no need to, unlike earlier submarines, and take several minutes to reached submerged trim. The vents are underneath the hull, and on the Vanguard class, you also have a large vent for the upper casing that runs about half the length of the boat.

Thanks David! :-)
Flood hole's on the real thing..... sorry can't help. I have the problem of getting air out of the hull without turning it into a collander! I've covered most with model tank etch brass gauze to try and keep it looking ok, but that causes problems with surface tension and "light" bubbles won't go through... I have heard that a thin smear washing up liquid help's to reduce this but does anyone have any other ideas? {:-{

Here are the bow grilles on the underside of the Vanguard. You have a similar arrangement at the stern. If the Jecobin plans are to be believed, the middle section of the Vangaurd is totally dry, with only the upper casing and forward and aft spaces free flooding.

You can try waxing the underside of the boat, also worth getting the surface as smooth as you can- OTW use CSM for their lay-ups, so you can sand this back a bit (don't go too mad!), that will help stability and freeboard too. Surface tension on the grilles can't really be eliminated at 1/100 scale! The flat deck of the Vanguard class isn't a big help either. Probably the best way would be to make the missile hatches hinged, put some weights on the underside of each one, then as the boat dives the air should open them until expelled, and the weights will close the hatch back up again. Or control them with a small servo. Even if you just made a couple of those, it would help enormously.

Now you know why earlier boats had so many holes and slots cut into them- they had to dive quickly and trapped air was as much of a concern with 1:1 boats as the miniature versions.

@ bonehead. The old washing up trick realy do's work the soap breaks the surface tention and helps get ridd of clingy (?) air bubbles
get one of them spray bottles full of water with a blob of washing up liquid then just spray your sub, job done

Thank's for that, Mark! Just done a "Skip Dive" through the bin and found an old shower sprayer that ran out this morning so I've taken the tip and will try it out on Sunday but it should help! ;)

Nice photo Subculture, have added it to my file - the slot's are marked on the OTW hull but I opted, as they are not so visual, to use the old 10mm drill at intervals along the bottom.... quite a few. I have used mesh to enhance the detail of the slot's you illustrated but didn't cut them out. The boat take's on water like a camel but has a tendency to, ahem, trap wind so to speak! Sunday will be a good trial, as Dennis Pond and I got it going perfectly in his test tank but at Wicksteed it was troublesome, but then it was as rough as.... a very rough thing and twice as windy! I'm bringing some lead weight's and also another prop to try but that is slightly heavier so I'm a bit reluctant to try that without a test tank trial....I'll see how it goes!

Cheer's
Jim

Well, I've been going down the list, if everyone who says they're coming turns up, I'm looking at about a dozen people on the Saturday- unfortunately one or two people can't make it for the whole weekend, but double that number on the Sunday! Yikes will we all fit in the pool?

As most people bring along two or more models this could mean in excess of forty subs on display!

Right off out into the garden to pray to the sun god.

Well indeed- that's what the pool is there for. Mind you, there is six hours each day to sail. If you can sail continuously for that length of time, you're doing very well (and so are your batteries!).

Ha Ha get about an hour each out of my Akula batteries I have 4 of them and about an hour out of my U47 batteries I have 2 of them so Andy 6 Hours is possible. wouldn't like to try though the radio would probably die after a couple of hours  %)

Well the first day went very well, lovely warm and sunny day, a clear pool and cold beer- doesn't get much better! We had about 24 boats in attendance today, which was a very good showing as this was likely to be the quietest day, with the majority of people coming along tomorrow.

Nice to see quite few newcomers to the Dive-ins, like John Reynolds and Ian Oldham who travelled a considerable distance to the attend this event.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take any snaps, as I was kept very busy sorting out frequency allocation and pulling pints! But others were snapping away merrily, and we had a couple of tame scuba divers swimming around with underwater cameras, so video and pictures will come in the next few days. I hope to get a chance to take some pictures tomorrow.

Looking forward to tomorrow now, and hoping those blue skies stay put.

Andy

Oh dear..... hope it dried out ok. Leave it a good while before switching anything back on. Roy sank his typhoon last time after forgetting to plug the vent tube and eveything worked fine after. Easy recovery is a big bonus.

Hi All!
I had a great day on Sunday and it was realy good to put a few names to faces too. My Vanguard went well, even if I say so myself as it has been a pain in the derrier to get to dive straight....as I said to Subculture - trapped wind can be embarrassing!
I had alot of compliments on the weathering I'd done - I was worried I'd gone too far, which is sooo easy to do and get carried away and so was pleased with the positive response so a big thanks to everyone!

For G4yvm....
I got the "staining" cue from a photo I found on the OTW Vanguard build thread on hereby "Turbulent". I have absolutely NO idea what it is or caused by but it's there so I painted it... colour not a dead match but hey? If you are interested there are some great photo's on his thread and it was a great help when I was building it.

Now looking forward to the next meet up.... any idea when that may be anyone???

Cheers to all

I was considering doing a late afternoon into evening Dive-in in early August, if there's sufficient interest. Something a bit different from the usual 10-4pm slot. Could arrange a BBQ, with a bring your own grub policy e.g I provide the facility and charcoal, and leave each person to bring their own choice of nosh, that way there should be no wastage. I can make up some power LED submerging lights to illuminate the pool, once it gets dusky.

Failing that, the next Brockwell Dive-in is scheduled for Sunday 6th November, 10am-4pm as usual. I will make up the flyer and distribute within the next week or so. I wanted to get the Summer event out of the way first.

I quite like the idea of an evening sailing with underwater illumination with a BBQ. Nice change from the usual. Will need to gauge interest and see if it works better on a Saturday or Sunday (with people having to get back to work on Monday). What time does it get dark in August I wonder?
Title: Re: Dive-in to Summer June 11th and 12th 2011
Post by: Subculture on June 13, 2011, 11:01:25 pm
Starts to get dark about 8-8:30pm depending which end of August you're at!  ok2

Thanks for the offer Trevor, good stuff! The only reservation I would have about using strong lighting around the poolside, is that the light tends to bounce off the surface of the water. That's why I considered LED's, being low voltage (so safe to submerge without risk of electrocution), and unlike filament based lamps, they just love the cold. I have a waterproof torch with a P7 LED (that's a 10 watt LED) which is roughly equivalent to a 50 watt halogen lamp (car headlight), so I'm going to take that up in the week and see how much it lights up the pool.

Many thanks again Andy, I put some nice words up on the other Dive-In photo's thread.  I would definitely be interested in your early August BBQ idea!
I should at least have my Caswell sub-driver blowing bubbles by radion control by then (tee hee!)  As I wrote on the other thread, keep that long rescue pole handy though.

The subs themselves could also be lit up, we fitted some stick on strips of led's to Mikes Unseen for a new years day run around the Cambridge club boating lake. The led's were in the water but the Lipo battery was dry inside the sub.

Count us in for the August evening run, great idea  :-))

yellow / green chemical glow sticks would give it an earie glow, but make sure they dont get too bent and leak, then they look really spooky (dont try this at home)

Thanks for a great weekend Andy, Clive and myself really enjoyed it. As you can see I finally found the mayhem page; up until now I never thought that these computer things would catch  on. Great photos, and I see you beat me to it with my videos. Incidentally I had lots of trouble with mhy Flycamone 2; it reset itself and recorded everything upside down. I've spent the last couple of evenings trying to watch videos on an upside down laptop.
A night sail sounds good; we have one of those every december in the Clevedon Model Boat club. The sub likes it, and I've found that LED fairy lights work well; just sacrifice a set of AA batteries for the evening, and plonk them in the water. Of course in Clevedon all I can see is an earilly lit patch of brown water, but its still fun.

Well thank you to everyone who made the effort to turn-up, and it's also a big thank you to St Albans Sub Aqua Club, for allowing us to host this event once again. We are welcome back next year,  and as the weekend format proved it's worth by encouraging sub modellers from further afield, I will be aiming to host it for the whole weekend once again, so make sure the second weekend in June 2012 is kept clear!  ok2
