Title: Coffee Stirrers
Post by: fatcat123 on May 12, 2011, 06:00:26 pm
Hi all,

I need approx 1000 mcdonalds style coffee stirrers but with square edges as appose to the usual rounded. They should be between 5-7" long, and about 1/4" wide. Thickness is usually 1mm or so.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, i would be eternally grateful. I really cant be bothered squaring the ends and cutting all the round ones i have. I need them to make an 'oak' deck for my barge.

Two points;
Ikea do a tool for cutting blind slats to length which might speed up the process;
Aren't you going to have to cut them all to length anyway?

No, i'm happy to lay them in the length that they are.

A model wood supply site can supply the stuff i need but its in 1m lenghts. Its slightly more appealing as it means less cutting.

I may be able to lay my hands on a box of stirrers in time for Wicksteed if you are interested.

Not sure if im going to wicksteed yet. I've emailed a company that does them (normally in batches of 10,000) and asked if they can make a smaller box up for me.

I'll let you know if i need some.

Know anyone with a Makro, JTF, Bookers or other 'cash n carry' warehouse / wholsale card?

You should be able to find them in packets of 500 there - alternatively do you have a costa coffee or starbucks anywhere nearby ? take some pictures to prove you make model boats and you're not just a weirdo and ask to buy a packet from them. Cash talks!

My mate has a cash n carry or Makro card so will ask him when hes next going.

Had an email back from the supplier i emailed, he's checked and all he has is round, despite them selling as square.!

Thanks for the tip

Coffee stirrers have to have rounded ends to reduce the risk of splinters as decreed by elfinsafetee   :police: :police:

  Have a look on Hobby's site (hobby.uk.com). They have 5mm x 2mm pine strip and others.

Jonty,

Found a site where i can get really thin stuff for pretty cheap. Still needs cutting to length. I'm waiting on another email to see if the company can supply the stuff i need, otherwise i'll order the beech strips.

I've used wooden tongue depressors in the past. Lovely wood as well. Ask your GP where he gets his from. BY.

I get mine from DFDS Ferries, when I travel from Dover to Dunkirk, they put big pots full of them ( with square edges) on the side tables with the sugar and milk. I asked and got a handful, no problem. I always ask, saves Aggro!
