We came across this photograph that belonged to a 'late' maiden Aunt.
We cannot identify the man but thought of you knowledgeable folks and wondered if you can identify his uniform. As a sideline and to make it boaty, we were wondering what type of ship is he on and what sort of date would it be.
No prizes, but it could be her late wartime boyfriend which she lost. <:(
Hope you can help in some small way.
Ken

Looks like a Royal Marine uniform and looks likely to be either a battleship or heavy cruiser by the turrets but I'm not 100% sure on that
-
Agree with Davie definitely Royal Marine uniform of the WWII era - in those days it was tradition for
one turret (either X or Y) to be manned by the RM - those guns look too big for a cruiser, I did think about
it being Hood but not enough detail in photo to decide
Geoff
-
Hey guys, you've whetted my appetite here. A Marine eh and he has some medals.
Wonder if he went down with his ship.
Thank you for the info so far
ken

The image could even pre-date WWII looking at the RM uniform.
But the Blanco leakage around the belt!! What's he been doing??
There's also a suspicion of blue top left of the photo, has somebody been playing around with Photoshop?
Yarpie.
-
If it were possible to identify his Medals ,that would give an idea of his record. I do understand that picture
quality may not allow this.John
-
That looks like a Royal Sovereign Class battleship.
-
In my extremely limited knowledge of things "upper deck", I would say the guns are 14" and the fact that the muzzles have blast bags should make it slightly easier to identify. No crested tompions to give a clue either.
But, are the guns A & B or X & Y?? %)
Royal Sovereign class could be right Brian. :-))
Yarpie.

Hi Yarpie
On the original, the blue is the remnants of a peeled off ribbon. more <:(
The Blanco illusion is on the original . I have put the original untouched photo (except by her fair hand) on to gather as many clues as possible.
Fascinating stuff
John, Here is blow up of the medals. oh dear
Also not obvious in the picture is the drawing pin hole through the top of leg. A pin up, I would guess. :}
Ken
-
just a guess but I would imagine it is X and Y turrets in the picture - people like to get photographed in their
own "part of ship" and the crested tompions being missing made me think it was wartime. But as I said
only a guess. Turrets do seem to have the same shape as the Royal sovereign class,
Geoff
-
The vertical metal structure to the lower right of the marine is too light for the foredeck so would agree we are seeing X & Y turrets..,.we also see an unbolted round cowling on the deck to the left so the photograph would not have been taken in any official manner....just a snap for loved ones O0.....Derek

Good detecting Derek. Very observant
The trouble is no one is alive of that generation in our family, so it will remain a mystery.
Cheers

Does the cuff insignia indicate that he was a captain RM?
-
I don't think so Jonty - that I believe is RM dress uniform. If he were a Captain he would have 3 pips on his
shoulders and I can't see them.
He has something just above the buttons on his cuffs it is either a long service stripe or a wound stripe.
Geoff
-
long service stripe army and raf had them about 1949 1950 one stripe raf was for 5 years if i remember
-
Navy and I assume RM each stripe was four years - after 3 stripes you then got your LSM at 15 yrs.
Geoff
-
All you guys with this detective work ,fasinating stuff , you Navy fellas know the parts o k .I reckon the owner of said photo has had more info than a well known programme great ,keep it goin ,
-
They don't need any encouragement Dave!
Next they'll have a "Who is this" thread, featuring some ancient black and white photo of someone stood at the docks, and you'll have to guess who it was, what ship he was on, what dock was it, and worst of all ....................................
I'll be joining in !!!! %) %%
Danny
-
Thats the spirit Danny.....now who started this thread? :o %) ...yes it was Captain Ken :-)) .... {-) ...Derek
-
Excellent, whose go is it next ?? {:-{
-
Excellent, whose go is it next ?? {:-{
Thank you everyone. That concludes this man.
Like Dicky D says, Who wants to go next ? :-))
Ken
-
Thanks Ken....here is a snap from OZ........but clearly not an OZ Naval commander......... :} .......so who is he?.........Derek
-
Is that the king on the right?
If so that could be the commander of the ship that carried the king to Oz on a royal visit.
-
No TT...not the King
The date of the photograph was July 28th 1919 & was taken in Australian waters...the officer at that time had attained the following awards
Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath
Order of Merit
Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order
Derek
-
Mountbatten ?
-
Mountbatten was only 19 when this photo was taken so I think not.
Geoff
-
Wild guess - Admiral Sir Reginald Tupper
Danny
-
no ....not Admiral Sir Reginald Tupper nor a younger Lord Mountbatten
Another clue.......he was not Knighted...but did have a "heraldry" type salutation other than his Naval rank title
There is a very easy method of determining the name of the individual and yes it involves a combination of questions in one long phrase in GOOGLE O0 .....
................Derek
-
Gent on right, founder of the society mentioned on the inscription on photograph ?
-
Arrow5......my text does not have that information .......>>:-( >:-o but it is fair to assume he was an Australian civilian
Further investigation reveals our mystery man was earlier Knighted [Sir XXXX YYYYY]..........but this was prior to a higher salutation of "heraldry" or "Nobility"
So we know he was a British Admiral...[by his uniform] ...his later salutation of "heraldry" or "Nobility"...was not Lord or Sir :embarrassed:
Just to complicate matters {-) ...the vesel on which the image was taken was built in 1906 & taken up by the RN in 1915 as HM Suva...prior to delivery as HMAS Suva in 1919
I am going to post this & then look at British Heraldry in GOOGLE ....Derek
-
Try Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty?
(I shouldn't be doing this, I'm supposed to be making boats!!!!)
Danny
-
Bell Boat Racing ...it is good to interject our boat building with our building of the mind :-)) ...but no not Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty
To our Ken....the thread originator ...this format may a little too complicated...so I will shorten this by adding the question.....
"who was the Admiral of the British Fleet at the Battle of Jutland?",...& here you will find your answer........................ O0 Derek
-
Thats a dead give away Jellico , what is the rest of the story then ?
-
arrow5.... :-))...has the floor....Adrimal Vicount Jellicoe visited Cairns in Queensland [OZ] on July 28th 1919 ....following is a full page image from my text........Derek
-
As Danny Bell Boat says " I should be building a boat"... but here is a local Glaswegian that was a bit of a sailor.
-
Teabag Tom
Ned
-
AYE Ned, Tommy Lipton...........but was he on one of his J class or some other of his boats. O0 O0 O0
-
He wouldn't be standing upright on a J unless he was alongside
Ned
-
Tam the tea boy , right enuff. Your go Ned.
-
Describing Sir T -
"possibly the world's worst yacht builder but absolutely the world's most cheerful loser"
Obviously would have made a great Mayhemmer! %) {-) {-)
Danny
-
Sir Thomas didnt build his yachts did he ? Beings rich enough to pay the likes of Nicholson and the Fairlie people surely ?
-
Probably! Just quoting the Mayor of New York when they awarded him a Loving Cup for being the happiest loser! {-)
Danny
-
Funny guy the Mayor {-)
