Title: Sourcing Red Cedar
Post by: CF-FZG on June 04, 2011, 01:07:49 am
Hi everyone,

I've just spent over an hour searching here, fleabay, and t'internet in general, trying to locate a source of Western Red Cedar in 'model' sizes - ideally 3/32" x 1/2" x 24"/36" long.

Any suggestions - shops etc. very welcome :-))

Thanks,

Mark.

CF-FZG ... a convenient source of 4" wide x 1/2" thick x 1 yard lengths of WRC is random groove cedar panelling from a timber merchant or the like

....the question then is do you have the capacity to rip the lengths into your chosen plank thickness.....?

1. a scroll saw will cut the timber but provide uneven & tapered widths
2. a band saw will provide a more accurate width as long as a width fence is used
3. a power saw could be used
4. a Proxon table saw will provide the best accurate plank cutting solution ... O0....but at a substantial cost  :-))

Just to digress....WRC is a quick growing timber & has rather course grain structure........whereas oak is slow growing & results in a far closer grain structure & is happier being steam bent that WRC ...just a thought  ;D

Oak is also available in 4" wide x 1/2" thick x 1 yard lengths of random groove panelling from a timber merchant or the like

The trick is to find the best timber merchant  :o ........................better to pay a few $ more & get good advice........... O0 Derek
