Title: uss newport news restoration
Post by: Marks Model Bits on March 03, 2007, 01:50:45 pm
After taking my daughter to sail her destroyer on our local lake I was fired up to build something for myself again ( why should she have all the fun, and I am also fed up with her saying when can I have my boat back !!!)
So into the attic I went and I found my old Newport News model I built about 17 years ago when I belonged to The Wessex Model Boat Club '88 ( I was 4 stone lighter and had hair back then!!!) She was looking very tired and battered as she had not fared well enduring 4 house moves ( Fordingbridge Hants to Ferndown to Poole Dorset to Exeter Devon and finally to Newport in south wales) she will need a complete restoration.  The hull is still ok it just needs sanding the old paint off filling and repainting, the superstructure is basically sound and won't require much work to look good again but most of the fitting that are not actually missing are damaged beyond repair and my daughter has promised to help me as long as I let her sail her model more at the lake.

I will post more pics as the rebuild progresses.

I have a USS Newport News that also needs finishing. Was it made from a Model Master Plans Service plan from the 60's? I have this plan and I noticed it was originaly intended for a steam plant?  nice pictures I will look forward to any more you post.

My son and I will name her USS Dallas after the hull which was cancelled, good luck with the restoation.

Hi Mark and Hannah,
This link might help in your restoration.
www.tranhungdaotrip.com/ShipsPlans.html

It is scans of the original plans for Newprt News, as you can see there were a lot of differences to the ship between when these plans were drawn and to the version that went into commission.

Look forward to seeing more pictures, keep up the good work
