Title: Centreboard schooner "Mary J Stubbs"
Post by: rob1962 on June 24, 2011, 05:32:59 pm
Hi:
I have been on a couple of forums, but just found this one which seems to be more UK based, so here we go. Not many modellers where I live, on the Isle of Mull, though.
I am six weeks into the build of Stubbs, for R/C, at a scale of 1:24, so she will be about 1100 mm overall, and displace about 4.2 kilos or so.
I am making the centreboard a bit  thicker  than scale, and it will be mosly lead, dropping to 90 degrees as well as the scale 30 degrees, so I hope to get enough stability.
I am still thinking of one winch with a loop serving the sheets to both sails, although it is suggested two winches may be better. No final decision yet. Anyone know of suitable through-deck fairleads, please?
I'll now see if I can post the pics. Phil.

Nylet and housemartin do loads of fittings
Pekabe are top line  but you pays your money

Good look up there, lets see the build photos

Having said that,

 Welcome to the forum,
Plenty of expert and not so expert advice

Thanks Ned, I'll follow those up. The schooner is from drawings in Howard I Chapelle's "The American Fishing Schooner", a splendid mine of information and details.

Slug- agreed! I have a full selection of working blocks, rigging lines, nav lights, portlights, etc. for the build from Modelling Timbers; excellent service.
I see you live in Newark- I used to work there before I retired four years ago. Will be back next month to pick up a cylinder head from Northern Road Engineering, and to see old pals.

Hi Phil!

Your boat's looking super! I'm very interested in the centreboard as some swotting up I've been doing has told me that the Hearts of Oak that I'm modelling (Morecambe Bay Prawner) was unusual in having a centreboard fitted.

I think you're building on a GRP hull. If not then I apologise for the slur. But is there a chance of some pictures of how you've done the centre board inside the hull?

Cheers!

Robert.

Plank on frame sir, how dare you! A pic of the basic framing hopefully follows- the centreboard box is formed in marine ply.
Like the original it is offset to one side of the keel; the mast offsets t'other side.
I've just realised I now have to remove eight of the stanchions; on this ship, the chainplates are sandwiched between the planking and the stanchion. Rats!

A thousand humble apologies Sir!
Thanks for the picture though.

A bit more progress- cap rails on, centreboard now lead-filled brass, and rudder ready for pintles. The keel shoe is 8x8 mm brass- a bit more ballast.
The centreboard is shown in the scale position, and fully down for sailing. The rudder is telescopic, and drops for sailing. Has anyone tried this? I will find out if it works!

Hey,

that looks fine. Can You post some technical datas like length, estimated weigh, sail area and so on?

Regards

Lothar

Hi Lothar: she will be about 1100 mm overall, and I think should be be between 4.25 and 4.5 kilos displacement.
I have no idea about the sail area yet! I am still trying to find out more details of her rig.
I believe she only had a topsail on the mainmast; I don't think I don't think I will bother with the topsail though.

I've just found out I've been beaten to it!
John Stubbs, in Auckland, NZ, has his version on the water- I just hope mine looks as good.

Does anyone have any contact details for John? I'd love to compare notes.

A wee bit of progress- I'll start on the final finish to the hull soon. i've already started on the bowsprit metalwork; the quarterdeck is not glued yet.

A bit of progress- I've just given the hull a light wash of very thin matte grey paint over the matte black. The black looked just too dead. I'll wait a day or two before masking for the red antifoul.

The deck furniture is loosely in place. The little glazed port for the compass has a working sliding door; inside there is a working 9 mm dia. compass!

Foremast now stepped, and decks planked- I re-did the quarterdeck, as I was not happy with it.
The remaining deck gear will follow shortly! The gaps round the stanchions disappear with paint- I've started on this.

Winch now completed and glued; jib horse in place, and stove flue fixed- hiding behind the mast.
Slow but steady!

Rigging started. For some reason, the blackened brass gammon iron looks brown in the photo- it looks matte black in real life.
The deadeyes are bolted on with 16BA bolts- fiddly!

About there with the standing and running rigging. All lines and blocks work as full-size; if only I could get the lines to hang neatly on the belays like full-size.
Sails next, although there are still details such as anchors and the tender davits to fit.
I think I will make up a little clinker built tender to hang on the back.

If the running rigging is not 'working' (part of the RC control) but is just there for detail there are a couple of things you can do.
Firstly, run CA glue along it and shape before the glue goes off. A thin piece of plastic will not stick to the CA.
Secondly, replace with thin copper wire, shape and paint.

If it is working, I can think of no solution.

I am sure others have fixes they could suggest

Although the rigging is not part of the R/C controls, I like to have it all working. My crew could find that every line and every block worked, and they could sail the ship, setting or dropping the sails as necessary.. They might have trouble disconnecting the rudder servo though!

Beeswax may stiffen the running rigging and allow you to hold a shape a bit better.

Good old spit seems to help, as well as having large hanks. The lines were dyed with liquid shoe shine, the sort with a foam pad on the top of a squeezy bottle, so there is probably a bit of wax there.
Will have to do! There is a lot of line there with 4:1 tackle.

Flotation tests today. With ballast to represent the sails and radio gear, she floats level, with her waterline about 2 mm below the designed one on the drawings.
I mentioned previously I had calculated her displacement at 4.5 kg; the actual displacement is 4.55 kg.
A sigh of relief; no extra ballast, but more importantly, I do not need to lighten things.

Just about there- all I need are the sails. I am going to try using the nylon from the inner lining of a tent. The radio gear is in and working; the jib is not controlled though.
The main and fore sheets are black line in the photo of the radio gear, since changed for nylon monofilament- you can just see this on the other photos.

Finished at last! I used an old bed sheet for the sails; sewing the bolt-ropes on took ages. Now to see how she sails- there do not seem to be any shallow freshwater ponds too near; I'll have to investigate.

Nice work Phil, anxious to see sailing photos when that happens.  Reminds me of the model of the Emma C. Berry I built several years ago and sailed RC.. did quite well.
