Title: Beermacht's Beluga Build
Post by: andyn on July 09, 2011, 06:00:10 pm
As most of you won't be on RCGroups, I thought you should all see this... The aren't many words to describe the engineering in this model....

The figures are pretty amazing too:

Scale: 1/32
Length: 216cm
Beam: 29cm
Weight: 59,5kg
Compressed Air System: 7 bar, 2 compressors
Main Balast System: 5.7 liter
Trim: 2 piston tanks with 470ml each
Scopes: Snorkel, Periscope, Radar, Radio Antenna (all air driven)
Power supply: 24V (6x 12V Gel Lead Batteries)

Truly amazing, with engineering quality reminiscent of military thermal imaging equipment I used to work on.
Stunned.  Not so much a 'build', more a major engineering project.  :o

These boats are known as 'Pressluft'. You can see more boats like this at http://www.pressluftjunkies.de

A lot of the German modellers work as a collective, pooling their various talents and skills into one large melting pot- as you can see it produces impressive results.

Lothar Mentz set down the main parameters for these boats, and they all follow similar principles. Large central ballast tank with twin compressors storing air in a front mounted reservoir. Two piston trim tanks which tend to equate to about 10-15% of overall ballast volume under full proportional control.

Electronics for these boats were developed by Nils Canditt and Markus Rieger.

Hey all! Thanks for the nice words about this project. And thanks to Andy that he started this topic here. For me, this forum is new.

Well, this kind of building is not that complicated. And if Lothar supports it, it will be a success. Subcultion mentioned him as Father of this type of system. It's very reliable and works pretty good without any problems.

Anyway, this model is not finished at all. There are still missing parts and details. Resently we changed the conning tower because the one on this pictures is not correct. Sascha, the owner of the second Beluga, builds a new scale one. The hatches on the conning tower are also still missing as well as the bow dive planes.

Currently I design a new propulsion system with a new propeller and a new brushless motor with approximately 3000 Watts. The current motor, a Dunker 24V motor, is too weak. And the propeller could be a little more efficient. I will post here as well if someone wants to see the progress.

Have a nice sunday!

Andy

First of all, the credit of this work goes to Sascha!

I already mentioned the fact that our conning tower is not equivalent to the original. Especially the gangway on the side of the tower was wrong. So he started to fix this mayor fault.

He removed my (MY!) conning tower from the hull
(http://borg-core.com/roteflotte/images/P1710/conningtowerV2/P1710_conningtowerV2-01.jpg)

A flat plate were cut for the base.

This plate was necessary because the gangway is only on the front of the tower.

Gangway and conning tower is filled together.

Now we have another master for our new mold. Well, close! We've decided add some more details. Especially the welding seams would be nice to have them before laminating two towers.

Sascha find a way to add some gorgeous welding seams. It was a lot of work, but really worth!

This are pictures of the mold, still with way on it. So no better picture is available right now.

This is the final tower with the corrected gangway and the welding seams.

Hello guys,

Last saturday we went to a lake in Mannheim, Germany. I wanted to make the first video of the Beluga. Unfortunately, it seems that I just filmed the Beluga and forgot the others. So this is the reason why I post this in here and not in the Mannheim thread. That would look a little selfish.

Anyway, here is the link to the Mannheim 2011 thread:
Mannheim, Germany 2011 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=31532.0)

And here the video:

I replaced the old Dunker GR55/63 Motor with a modern, brushless Motor. The available power is enormous. Also the belt drive was removed because it was obsolete.

For the test in my pond, I had to limit the speed controller to 66%. And it's still a little to much. I will test this configuration at the lake early September.

Here is a video:

Well, we will see if this is still impressive in the lake. Anyway, I use music from the Free Music Archive. The first song is from Renzu "Fox Fire", the second one is from A very clever Robot "Power Outage".

You find them here: http://freemusicarchive.org/search/?quicksearch=A very clever robot (http://freemusicarchive.org/search/?quicksearch=A very clever robot)

As you can see in the video, I changed the drive train. Here are two pictures of the old belt drive train. Attached is a Dunker GR55/63 which provided not enough power for this big sub. Originally, two Dunkers were planned for this sub. But before I buy another "old fashioned" brush motor, I decided to change to brushless.

Here are two pictures of the new drive train. But I have to say that this is actually an interim solution. I planned to change the whole stern early 2012. So this will be my testing platform for now.
