What colour do you use to paint the lenses in the running lights on your models. I usually use white, but this is not correct is it? Similarly the red and green lights. I'm not sure that these should be bright red and green, although that's what I normally paint them. {:-{
Any suggestions anyone?

normally the navigation lights have coloured lenses , however for our modelling purposes i often colour my bulbs or leds using glass paint from the local art n craft shops !

Sorry - I should have made it clear that I am referring to dummy lights in white metal or resin. Its quite easy if they have 'glass' lenses and bulbs/leds :-)

Usually red or green for port and starboard but if the model is of a period when oil lamps were used then I think the starboard glass was blue as the oil lamp flame was yellow!
White lights are probably best rendered in silver paint.

Thanks Colin. One of the reasons for the question is that I am building Talacre, and looking at the Model Boats photo of your build, I thought the lenses were painted black - but its a scan of an old photo so maybe that explains it. It set me wondering however, as white doesn't look right. I'll try silver and also tone down the bright red and green.

Barrie,
It was all a long time ago....
Looking at the photo I think I just painted the lenses a darker shade of gloss red/green. Certainly they wouldn't have been black.

Tone down the Red and Green by mixing a little silver in with the colours.

Am I right in thinking at some point the side boards on port & starboard lights changed from red and green to black?
If so when?

Yes, it has been discussed on here before, I think it was some time in the 1970s. Talacre would have had red and green boards.

A method I have used in the past is to paint the lens silver and then paint a layer of the clear coloured paints enamels from the Revell range
