she was never a pop star in my mind.......just a very poorroll model for the youth of today..........i just feel very very sad for her parents who tried thweir best to put her on the straight and narrow.....she constantly flung it back in their faces. {:-{ {:-{ {:-{Not guilty Long :}
Why does Amy Winehouse have to be a role model for kids... the average politician, banker etc etc, I could go on, isnt. So why does some mentally ill singer have to be an example to kids?..
Dekan, what planet do you live on if you don't think that the youth of today DOESN'T think of the pop stars of today as THEIR roll models.......
ooooooooooooooohh no!!! only 95% of them would rather be a pop star or footballer, than a banker or politition....god forbid me for suggesting it, but you only have to watch [ please don't suggest i do] the X FACTOR to see what the kids of today "wanna be"
and if you think differently mate....you are really as far removed from the real world as your comment suggests, sadly.
no sorry, dekan.....they don't go out to consciously be a roll model, but kids choose them to be so, and celebs know that......and therefore i believe, have a moral duty to behave in a reasonable manner because of the celebrity status they hold, and the following that they have.
if you can't see that, then there's no point in making any further comment.
she was a wino and a junkie......QeD and had a celeb following from many young kids.....thank fully not mine.
I am so sad at the quality of thinking on this site, the life of a young women who was clearly ill has no value.
"See the world as I see it or you are bad , mad or worthless" Seem's to be the attitude of too many people on this forum.
I have had enough and will leave the small minded gang to their little Englander thoughts.
Thank you for the model advice and help from a number of people who visit this site (especially those who have contributed to the steam and sail section) however I can't stand the bile anymore goodnight and goodbye.

You must be getting old, Neil, you sound like quite the philosopher O0. I totally agree with your comments about so-called celebrities, but many of them can't handle the pressure the celeb status puts on them. I think that, in many cases, they are either too young or too immature (or both) to cope with the sudden wealth and public exposure that goes with being famous, and simply can't deal with it in a responsible manner.

Does this mean that Hobby King will now be on the CIA's hit list for supplying terrorists? lolIf you go here http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=1IqBydvMRZcC&lr=&rview=1&redir_esc=y and browse to the early '40's, and look in the small ads, they (US govt) were calling for anybody with a home workshop to step up and make parts for weapons and help the war effort. I imagine that nowadays, anybody in the US with abilities in the home manufacture area, like model makers, is probably on an agency list. Not the CIA, because they operate beyond the boundaries of the USA, but the FBI are probably interested.........

Interesting read with some valid points, but the closing line is just the perfect tool for politicians and despots everywhere - 'If we can’t have a decent debate, is that debate worth having to begin with?'And the question that then arises is "What is a decent debate?" followed by "Who decides?".

The story says that she said "I'm not from Nottingham". So where does she come from that doesn't have double yellow lines?Presumably the same place where it's also permissible to park halfway on the pavement while you go and have a coffee. The lovely thing about it is that she will also shortly be receiving a penalty notice from Nottingham City Council for driving up Goldsmith Street (as shown in the picture of her driving away) - it's for trams only. These notices are issued automatically using ANPR software linked to the CCTV camera halfway up the street. Ask me how I know.......... <:(

BBC: WW1: Gallipoli campaign ship is given new lease of life
Sanitarium was founded in Melbourne by Edward Halsey, an American who was a baker at Kellogg's Battle Creek, but who migrated to Australia in 1897. Sanitarium Australia and Sanitarium New Zealand are 2 separate companies, but they work together, they are both wholly owned by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Because they are owned by a church the companies pay no income tax, something that has been severely criticised by their competitors.Sanitarium, does however sponsor, financially assists, Seventh Day Adventist schools, now called colleges, throughout Australia, which helps to keep the fees low for parents.

Re United States:
There are reports that asbestos was removed when she was towed to Turkey to be stripped in 1992, no idea if that was all of it though. One of the problems in bringing her back into service was that her accommodation layout is based on several passenger classes with duplication of public spaces and totally unsuitable for the modern cruise market. There would have been problems with the power plant too, which was based on the Midway class aircraft carriers I think. When she was originally in service the engines had to be kept warmed through while she was in port by slowly turning the props all the time to avoid metal expansion and contraction. It would be nice to see her preserved but it would only be a superficial shell of the original ship laid up alongside somewhere as nothing of her original interiors and fittings remains.
Queen Mary has been luckier but still has a rather precarious existence financially and much of her interiors are still intact. We spent a night aboard back in 2001 and my Wife had to literally drag me off the ship next morning to continue our trip.

I blame the CPS but Tesco didn't really need to press charges. What did they get out of it? 21.50? including victim compensation?
How much bad PR does this kind of thing generate? I am surprised Tesco head office allowed this to go forward with all the bad publicity they have had of late.
He was abusive and potentially violent. Tesco sticking up for its staff. :-))Quite right. How much is an acceptable level of misbehaviour or violence towers staff? A lot of shops have signs that say "We always prosecute shoplifters" and most people think that's reasonable.
Then the charge was the wrong one. 'Criminal damage' says to the Tesco staff that a bottle of milk is more important to Tesco than their employees' H&S.There probably wasn't enough evidence to be sure of a conviction on a more serious charge. We don't know the details but reading between the lines it sounds like this bloke was 'known' and Tesco/police decided he needed a proper warning off.

While its shocking that a boat has sunk, but thankfully the crew has been saved. I do have to question the motives of the owners.
The boat had four Filipino crew aboard. Why Filipino's? surely with the amount of Scottish fishermen or even fishermen from the south west out of work, it should have been crewed by some of them? The only reason for employing a crew from half way around the world is to save a few quid on crewing costs, it is so wrong that they can get away with doing this.

Most boats have no choice but carry Phillipino crew , because of the restrictions on days at sea and quotas the fleet has lost over 50% of our own men to other industries ( mainly oil rig standby boats ) and they will not return in a hurry. It costs a LOT of money to take these guys over so its not greed.
The skipper has to pay ALL transport costs , the immigration fees , provide them with all their clothes/oilskins/bedding , pay for all their safety and compulsory training courses and they are on a contract weekly rate meaning they are the only ones who are guaranteed to get paid every week. It would be no more expensive than taking on a local man and certainly no cheaper ( boat insurance goes up because these guys by law have to live on the boat even when its in harbour ).
There is also the problem that a lot of local ex-fishermen are ex-fishermen due to problems with drink or drugs. Its a simple fact that without these guys there would be NO industry left so slagging off skippers for trying to keep a boat going when the odds of getting suitable crew locally isn't there is , I'm afraid , plain ignorance
If you don't know what your speaking about don't start
, I see Davie's points quite clearly.
so there's little point in arguing with a fisherman about the fishing industry.

I think I read the same book Jim. I particularly remember the comment about pre-nuclear, uncontaminated steel from the German Fleet being desirable - particularly in the medical machinery industry where nuclear medicine required metals for X-Ray, scanners etc, which would be easier to calbrate if unexposed to atmospheric radiation. Makes sense!

Google and Facebook duped in huge 'scam'Perhaps HMRC should employ him to get money out of multi-nationals...........
Google and Facebook have confirmed that they fell victim to an alleged $100m (£77m) scam.
In March, it was reported that a Lithuanian man had been charged (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-39351215) over an email phishing attack (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/technology-36981625/what-is-phishing) against "two US-based internet companies" who were not named at the time.
They had allegedly been tricked into wiring more than $100m to the alleged scammer's bank accounts.
On 27 April, Fortune reported that the two victims (http://fortune.com/2017/04/27/facebook-google-rimasauskas/) were Facebook and Google.
The man accused of being behind the scam, Evaldas Rimasauskas, 48, allegedly posed as an Asia-based manufacturer and deceived the companies from at least 2013 until 2015.

Its nothing to do with politics - its all about money. An event like this is a massive tourist attraction with an ongoing knock on effect in tems of attracting visitors to the UK. As UK citizens we all benefit from that.
I know a lot of people may have turned up their noses and refused to watch it on principle but that was rather silly really as it was certainly worth watching as a spectacle and the American pastor was quite entertaining although I doubt if he will be invited back.
You don't have to believe in all this stuff to acknowledge that it was a big plus for the UK overall and is likely to bring us significant financial benefits. If it was heavy at the stern, why did it go down front end first? My observations of sinking models shows that the heavy end loses freeboard first. Camera? I expect that these days, cameras are obligatory, probably as a condition of insurance, and for an unusual job, as the basis for a future low cost Discovery Channel documentary.
if that isn't an insurance scam, I don't know what is...…..
As a mod on RCMB pointed out.....the engine had been removed, and all the weight is therefore distributed in the stern, the paddle wheels, prop shaft, greater amount of top hamper on her at the stern...……..and if there were no crew on the boat and she was being towed under no rudder command [as clearly can be seen as she goes down, why were the RNLI called, and actually standing by, just in time to video her taking her last swan dive……very fortuitous I would say.
In the report it said the vessel was well prepared for the tow, but the way all those wooden window covers popped off as she disappeared, they may as well have covered the windows with plastic bags...…….prepared my backside...……..the only preparation was that they had a tow rope AND A CAMERA to capture in on film.
and I'll lay a tenner on the fact that the MCA wasn't informed that they were attempting to tow her across the Irish sea...……..I'd be interested to know what they say, seeing as the company had removed engine and fuel tanks to avoid any pollution...……...a masterful amount of forethought......as though they were half expecting something like this to happen....
its actually laughable, but also interesting to know that she was of course insured for 0.27 of a mill...………
am I cynical or what.
If it was heavy at the stern, why did it go down front end first?
Cynical means that you don't care - skeptical is the one that implies disbelief. The two often get swapped.
my cynical mind would say it was weighted at the bow,...…………..but then i'm just cynical.

Lengthened by 10M to correct the problem, it is now too long to fit into its dock, which is having to be lengthened to accommodate the larger hull.

But would you want to travel on a ship without a captain or crew?
Hi all, the drones over Gatwick cold be anyone from a lonely lad in his bedroom through eco warriors to a foreign power. I have been interested in the technology although do not have one myself. But from what I have picked up, two drones, one slaved to the other with a net slung between them could go hunting for a drone.
I think trying to interfere with the frequency hopping mobile phone network is at best going to be disruptive to users but otherwise difficult.
Failing that, distroying the drone would not help a lot as it would be simple to put up another. I believe the type has been identified. However batteries do not last forever so someone must be replacing them which suggests there is more than one involved. Both in people and drones.
It does show up the big gaps between what we are told about security and the real world.
Anyone else with thoughts on the issues this uncovers?
Regards
Roy
My thoughts are that their are many methods of addressing the problem, just look on the web , some range from blocking the signal to using trained birds of prey (in Denmark) nets fired from a bazooka . My issue is with a hapless Government that has known and been warned of such a possible disruptive attack for years but has done nothing and made no contingency plans for such an event.
It will probably transpire that the culprits are a local band of eco warriors who are against the current proposals to double the capacity of the airport despite having given assurances to local residents many times over the years that it would never happen
There's already been a quote from the local noise abatement people. These are the people who buy a house next to the busiest single runway airport in the world and then complain about the noise. The statement basically said "isn't nice and quiet for a change!" I'll bet they wouldn't say it to the lady who had to take her kids home rather than Lapland to see Father Christmas.
The current row is that they want to convert it to a two runway airport by upgrading the present smaller emergency and taxi way strip doubling the capacity of the airport. Something they have many times assured local residents they would never do.Quote
It was never stated that a second runway would never be built. The 1979 agreement was that no new runway would be built before 2019. Using the taxiway could be a better solution than building an entirely new runway outside the present site and vastly increasing the noise footprint.

When were Drones a hobby?
No kits or scratch builds.
Nowt but a toy
Wouldn't agree there Ned have a look at the Drone Forums an awful lot build their own andLoads of body parts and frames available
In the news we are told these are huge professional £10k drones - not little toys.
This is the Cutty Sark from 1000'
I often go flying with a friend in his helicopter - at 1000 feet up you can see everything on the ground very clearly. Following a large drone would be a piece of cake - in my opinion.Following it Aye once you have sighted it, I was observer in a Sioux (Think Mash) for a few years and camera shots and Eye shots ain't the same
In the news we are told these are huge professional £10k drones - not little toys.Looks more like a hovercraft than a drone
This is the Cutty Sark from 1000'
In the news we are told these are huge professional £10k drones - not little toys. This has been taken by a camera with a decent zoom lens, most drones use cameras with a wide angle lens to give a greater field of view. The picture is thus much smaller and often has considerable edge distortion. On the picture from a normal drone camera the Cutty Sark would be nearer car sized in the center, people wouldn't show up and it would show a large section of Greenwich.

Think of Google maps - the detail you can see on there is not as good as you can see out the window.

SO ! The real culprits are still out there and presumably capable of doing it all again Sussex Police - Nil.I'm still feeling this is a false flag operation.
I'm still feeling this is a false flag operation.
This is why I suspect a false flag.
The government has been twitchy about drones for years with lots of completely fabricated 'near misses' to drip-feed the public that 'drones are bad' (like at 10,000 feet???). NONE of the stories were ever comfirmed.
It seems the government don't like Joe Public having the ability to snoop around where a traditional razor wire-topped fence used to be complete security - so I think this operation is to get public backing for draconian laws making any owners of drones jump though so many hoops that it makes ownership too expensive and too much hassle. I suspect anyone selling a drone will have to complete all sorts of complex paperwork to force them to stop selling them. The owners will probably need to apply for a license and be over 18.
The worse part is one of them has said he likes ISIS and he wants to try and get a drone
As close to a plane as possible.....QuoteGynger, if you are serious about what you have said there then I hope you have reported it as it is exactly that sort of thing which has preceded actual terrorist attacks.
Colin
Now they're saying that there were no drones......
The cop in charge ...
Colin
Dear Longbuild light banter as I know your comment must be, the guy never had a drone just a helicopter. There may be a press conference tomorrow, that might be interesting.Actually I do believe if you can believe the news articals that he did have a drone at some point. But as you say conference should be interesting.
When you see this level of incompetence and I have nothing but respect for the police that we see, but they are told to go and do something by someone under pressure to get results. I say no more.

"The Cop" ..... "The Cop" ?????!?!?!?! :o

As it is , was not the original Notre D pretty well destroyed in WW2, so how much of it is original ?.. Will be interesting to see the rebuild over the next few years..
Not sure where to start in response to that post!
Firstly there has been a huge worldwide outpouring of sympathy and comments about the Notre Dame fire and absolutely nowhere has there been any suggestion that it is has been a joking matter. Are you suggesting that if St Paul's or Westminster Abbey had been subject to a similar conflagration then our European friends would have been splitting their sides with laughter? If so you have a very weird outlook on human nature.
Secondly, get your history right. The cathedral survived WW2 pretty much untouched. <*<

Not only that why all the donations No insurance or are they protecting their no claim bonus
It really got me on every news story I saw, not one anchorman/woman or reporter confirmed nobody was hurt. That should have been their opening statements every time. I also said to myself it's quite grotesque how many folk are sleeping rough on the street, so many people everywhere in the world can't feed themselves but as soon as an old building catches fire there's hundreds of millions in donations appear within hours? Something very sad about that to me.

Seems they have no 'Moorgate control'. The tube has this- systems put in place after the Moorgate tragedy to prevent an out of control train entering a terminus at at high speed. This achieved by limiting the power available to the train,a and adding additional braking devices should a train still be entering too fast.

True..... but a bit unusual for a brand new crane to fail at just over half the rated load?!?!!!!! {:-{
Edit - now appears to be a hook failure .....
"The crane’s twin boom and jib appears to have flipped over the rear while lifting a test load at the Liebherr yard in Rostock. We are told that the incident was caused by the failure of a wire rope during an overload test, but this has not yet been confirmed. The collapse was captured on video which you can see below.
Update:
We have now learnt that it was not a rope that failed, but the hook block - the four leg hook broke free of the neck/shaft. The sudden release of the heavy test load caused the boom to catapult back over the rear of the crane and crumple."

For a vessel of that size and cargo would be in the region of £750k to £1m but it all depends on any discounts they may have in place. There was, about, 3-4 years ago, some discussion about the larger container carriers going via the Cape as there was little differance in the cost of doing so.

I'm a huge R4 fan and while I was driving today they had a programme on the RRS Sir David Attenbourgh. Something alarmed me when their technician said they opened the doors then "filled" it to the same level as outside (sic).
I agree it looks like they must have a decent impressed current system in there. I have only installed a system to protect pipework before so if that lot is all stainless or galvanized (and I'm not sure it is or even needs to be rather than just painted grey) it must be complex. I'm nt sure why it would need to be anything than just CS plate though? However when you look at the description on the BAS website how they describe a moonpool to those of us in the offshore sector they are kind of missing the point and explain the benefit of them rather badly anyway.

Going cashless is worth far more to them than the public

No matter how many rules and regs the FIA generate there will always be clever designers looking for better ways to cheat without getting caught. Part of the cyclic nature of teams winning.
I'm probably wrong but I believe I noticed that current Scalextric slot guides lift the front wheels off the track. Is this correct? Is this fair? I don't remember this being the case when I was a lad, nor did they have magnets. Perhaps this is where F1 got their engineering ideas from? >>:-(
OK I was watching the Hornby programme about the Lambo Countach!

The suggestion on the street is that they contracted Del Boy to handle the UK end of the purchase contract

BBC TV: Why Ship Crash - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0013p1f/why-ships-crash (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0013p1f/why-ships-crash)
On 23 March 2021, the Ever Given – one of the largest container ships ever built – ploughed into the sandy bank of the Suez Canal, blocking the entire waterway. It stopped all traffic in one of the most important shipping lanes in the world for almost a week, causing a ‘ship jam’ of over 300 vessels and delaying deliveries of billions of pounds of vital food, fuel and medical supplies. The disruption to the global supply chain lasted for months.
How did such an advanced ship crash in one of the most closely monitored shipping lanes in the world? How did a team of engineers free the ship in just six days? And who or what is to blame?
Using never-before seen footage, testimony from witnesses speaking for the very first time, and expert analysis, this documentary aims to uncover the inside story of the Ever Given accident. And with over 2,500 shipping incidents a year, the film also asks if this was just a freak accident or whether it reveals a serious weakness in the world’s critical supply chain.
Should be renamed "Ever Stuck" !!Love It :-))
Just been reported, £250,000 worth of diesel nicked from Devonport.
None of the reports say where the auction is! >:-o
Massively over priced, and I agree some were built using a bread knife and painted with a yard broom....who knows, these days use the words "collectable" and "vintage" and suddenly you have your pension money.......
Soooo I have these boats.....vintage and collectable O0 O0 O0 O0
Not sure of the £40,000 to £60,000 valuation for the collection of 600 model boats.

In the Mind of a Whale How can we make sense of the biggest brains on the planet? by Tom Mustill
September 6, 2022 | 4,200 words, about 21 minutes
There are many scans of dolphin brains, but very few of whale brains. This makes sense given that the biggest hospital scanners can scarcely accommodate a very large human, let alone an animal the size of a small hospital ward. Fitting an adult humpback into an MRI would be like trying to get a melon through the hole of a bagel. The two baby whales Reidenberg had procured were just small enough to fit.
One study concluded that humans have five times the information-processing capacity of cetaceans, whom they placed beneath chimps, monkeys, and some birds. But in the same study, horses—with smaller brains than chimps—were found to have five times the number of cortical neurons. Does this mean horses are smarter than chimps? A major confounding factor in these types of comparisons appears to be that every factor is itself quite confounding.

This was announced some time ago. Quite right really, I bought a new 7in tablet for work a few months ago and was appalled it had a micro USB socket hese days. If I recall Rece Mogg was against the move but that's not so much of a surprise.
Incredible, I was lucky enough to be (one of many) divers on the Mary Rose,

Similar might be said about a model boat magazine
Was a suggestion his loss of power on take off was due to a rain guard that had been left on one of the intakes but I would have thought that would have become apparent on engine run up before release.
The old Mallaig to Armadale ferry was fun as well, it had a lift and turntable so it came alongside a normal pier, you drove onto the lift which lowered you to the car deck then the crew spun the turntable to point you to where they wanted you to park. I remember having to climb out the car window because we were packed in so tightly i couldn't open the door far enough.
...... :o and steam-powered by all accounts {-) .............................................................. DerekThe ferries may be owned by the Steam Packet Company but are no longer steam powered.

One should be wary posting links that have strings attached fishing for email addresses
Is it not a bit irrational to carry on using the term "engineer" so widely and often without consideration when there are so many who spend all their time in front of a screen? I know that to call someone a "mechanic" or a "technician" has become outdated but why have the titles seemingly been cheapened when they're the ones we need more than ever? :((
In fact, in Queensland it is possible to attain a University Degree in Mechanical Engineering without ever setting foot in an external engineering workshop >>:-(
Derek
Greeting's everyone.
I am a time served Carpenter/Joiner (not sure which applies but you had to be able to do both Carpentry and Joinery) who started as an apprentice in the sixties and extremely grateful to be classed as a "Tradesman", it was 5 years of learning including night school and eventually block release of 6 weeks x two to a Technical College i.e. back to school for 6 weeks x 2 each year. The apprenticeship covered all the relevant areas of the trade from hardwood church/bank fitting to concrete formwork but at the Tech everything had to be completed by hand (you had to use tools to a good standard), I managed to rise to City and Guilds level which, if I am honest made no difference to your pay or status you just needed to be able to do the task in hand. Now it seems that you can achieve "Tradesman" level in 6 months or 1 year although as I am led to believe, don't ask them to cut timber by hand or to plane a piece of timber with a handplane. I can teach anyone in 5 minutes how to use an Elu chopsaw the machinery does it for you try that in the middle of Wales with no electricity. I have no problem with technology or advancement in how we build or make anything but I am not sure that it's the right direction but hey I'm an Old fart.
Rant over, soapbox put away.
Keep smiling people,
:-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
In fact, the name “journeyman” is derived from the Latin diurnum, meaning “day” or “of one day.” The journeyman could be paid a daily wage, as he was now skilled enough to be hired and was ready to leave the shop of his master, taking day trips as necessary to perform his work.
surely its what the interior is like that counts
In my opinion, it’s the ugliest passenger ship I’ve ever seen, by a long way. :((
Just read that the UK is deficient in AWACS coverage due to the retirement of the A3 Sentrys (Nimrod killers) and delays for its replacement from boing (as in clang)
