Just heard a rumour that the second of the new carriers is to be renamed Ark Royal instead of Prince of Wales,( if it ever gets built of course), anyone confirm this. This rumour came via the navy's buzz system.
-
Anything would be better than the prince of wales. What has he ever really done? Covered with medals from
mumsey, talks to plants, and is on record as wanting to be a toilet seat. John.
-
Think the name "Prince Of Wales" for a ship has been around a lot longer than Charles, who in my opinion has actually been out spoken on a lot of matters which have now become a matter of practice in terms of environmental issues....Go Charles Go.. :} as for talking to plants how do you think my pumpkin last year grew to 13 stones..
However I think that Both are great and famous names for the new Carrier
-
Mainly for JohnS.......I don't know how old you are, but old Charlie has been quite a useful member of society over the years.
Early years trained as a helicopter (and fixed wing) pilot. Commanded a Minesweeper in his RN days. Has set up all sorts of trusts to help others. I could go on. The "newspapers" seem intent on running him down on a permanent basis. I'm no great fan, but I do suggest that you stop shooting from the hip and learn a bit more about his works. BY.

Prince Charles, met him once, nice guy who is personally awkward and can make others feel that way as well.
He means well, but not a patch on his mum. :-))
-
Interesting. I know PoW has been a famous naval name as has warships named after the monarch. But some how, QE2 on a warship unlike KGV just doesnt seem right. However, not being a monarchist, was King George 5th alive when KGV was launched? Is it unusual to have a current ship named after a living monarch?
The first carrier should be named Ark Royal rather than QE2 and the second PoW. All in my opinion :-))
-
Justboatonic - Sorry you have your facts ALL wrong - this ship will not be named after the present monarch -
when she was approached for permission to use this name she said yes but only if it was to be named after the Tudor
Queen Elizabeth and it will not have a 2 after the QE
Do agree about the name Ark Royal though

Did not realise that, in which case the second one should be HMS Sir Francis Drake.
Especially for anti-Pirate operations.
-
Use of Queen Elizabeth II for the current monarch caused controversy in Scotland due to the fact that the Tudor queen was not queen of Scotland, the two countries being separate at that time. King James had both numbers for Scotland and England after the Union. I wonder if Her Majesty (or her advisers) considered the reaction north of the border this time ?

Interesting! However, one has to wonder just what the tudor Queen Elizabeth has to do with the modern world!
-
What would you have as a ships name relevant to modern Britain HMS Chav, Tesco, Invalidity, Riot.
If you had ever served in the Navy you would know that they like traditional names for their ships.
Personally I would have kept to old carrier names. Ark, Victorious or Eagle would have been my first three choices
Geoff
-
Have to agree with that Geoff!
Colin

Most Naval capital ships were named after monarchs and admiral primarily.
the KGV class should of been called King George VI but King George VI said no and said to call it after his father.

She is credited with the formation of the Royal Navy we know today by getting the privateers to act as a unified force.
-
Why not Victory or Adminral Nelson?
More likely to be something like HMS Rooney or HMS Winehouse tho
-
We already have HMS Victory, she is still in commission.
Colin

Macedonian hasn't been used in a while. ;)

Are you referring to Prince Phillip?

Thought that was her arl fella the 8th?
As far as pugwash goes on about chav names, where have I suggested that!?
If you (and the navy) want traditional names, then Ark Royal is more traditional than PoW for a carrier!
-

I dont think he meant it like that.... more along the lines of the media deciding what a ship should be named. Which would mean whatever nobody is currently "in" would get a ship named after them.
Maybe they could get Ant and Dec to host a show and have phone in polls :D
Although the Lord Sainsbury doesn't sound too bad....
-
You would end up with the HMS Mel C, but then agian if the audience was old enough it might be the HMS Pink Floyd

I suppose thats better than HMS Scary Spice lol
Pink Floyd thats not so bad..... or perhaps HMS Bob Geldoff
-
I have three names
HMS ALEMEIN
HMS ARK ROYAL
HMS VOSPER

If they drop Prince of Wales it's probably because the powers that be are expecting full devolution and being based in Londonland, don't want one named after anything Welsh, Scottish...IMO
-
With only 79 commissioned ships in the current RN, perhaps we could double-up on names in order to keep some of the traditional ones? %%
The aircraft carriers could therefore be:
HMS Invincilous and HMS Indefatomitable (though I like HMS Princess Royal Oak Leaf, myself)
But it's likely that we'll end up with HMS Tesco and HMS HSBC.

Maybe they could have corporate sponsorship like F1 cars
"Ark royal is bought to you by Ryanair
-
They could always name it Geoffrey {-)
-
Think they should call her HMS Troutbridge
-
HMS Gordon Brown sponsored by Confused.com
Geoff
-
For me a 6th Ark would be at the top of the list
with Eagle or Hermes fighting it out for second.
Phil. ok2
-
I'm with Harrier on that one..... but whatever they call it let's get some fixed wing aircraft back on board!
-
As long as they don't let No10 get involved in the
naming just think of it to cement our new found
friendship with the old enemy we could end up
with H.M.S. Nepolion or the like ??? :o
-
Are you aware that the RFA once used the name "Ark Royal" for one of their ships? And a scruffy old thing she looked. BY.
-
They have had an Ark since the real carrier days
Eagle, Victorious, Hermes,Centaur
Ned
Ex Eagle,Victorious and Centaur as Eagles refit accomodation ship
-
Wow Ned, that takes me back... you sound like my dad! ;)
Only joking!
Steve.
Ex Illustrious, Invincible & Drake as Invincible refit base...
