This week, I have been mostly.....

.....building a canoe!

Sometimes, models just aren't big enough so we spent this week on a course near Keswick building a 15' plywood open canoe!  O0  It was courtesy of an organisation called ORCA (http://www.orcadventures.co.uk/index.htm): http://www.orcadventures.co.uk/index.htm

Lots of lovely family activity time  :}

This is the finished result.

Nice Job and as an ex-occasional canoeist I'm glad to see you are all wearing buoyancy aids. They are great fun when you are
young and fit.  Can just about remember those days

Oh yes! I'm a fully paid up member of the self-preservation society and physical coward.  :embarrassed:

Er, do you mean life jackets or the bodies' love handles?
But they don't look particularly overweight on that photo, as far as added buoyancy is concerned.

Besides, you're lucky. I wish there was a canoe building workshop here as well.
I would gladly lay keel of a canoe, given the shop facilities were available.

Interesting. So you pull the panels together with the zip ties, with the wadding between the panels - then what?  Do you epoxy the inside then sand off the excess epoxied wadding?

Yep! That's exactly what you do. Those with more foresight than me left very little wadding protruding inside as cleaning it off was definitely the hard part of the job.  We ran epoxy into the joints from both sides. The insides are also glass-taped.

The amazing thing is that the ply is fairly thin and the whole boat seems less solid that many model ones....still, we haven't broken it yet after several hours of paddling and me and my love handles weigh quite a lot  :embarrassed:

Excellent and good for you Sir.... we need a lot more of that sort of stuff on this planet!

... By-the-way, where is the RC gear hidden?  %)

Very nice canoe there - well done to the whole team.

Don't it feel good to get on the water in something you built?  :-))

In the life size crew figures, of course  {-)

Actually, it was rather terrifying the first time. Now that we're used to it, it is fantastic. And the bragging rights are immense!  :P
