Hi couple from the archives
This is Don Walkinshaw's model of The Bluebird, on its first run on the water with the gas turbine running - he did not 'open the throttle up' as he was running the model from person to person for trials ;D. This is South Shields Model Boat Club - I believe the person with the baldy head could be MikeK ;D
This is for the Type 42 lads, HMS Manchester on her 'trials'
The next is HMS Cornwall on her Sea trials

A few more pics , this time HMS NELSON at Ellesmere Port

Here is the same Hms Nelson on the water with Hms Ajax. The Ajax was built by our own bluebird and the Nelson wasbuilt by Brian Chambers both are members of Tynemouth model boat club. The next photo is the Nelson and Bluebirds scratch built HMS LeedsCastle at the Harrogate show ( Mayhem The CD is in the post.Riggers )

Hi All
another one from the Archives - this was taken on a night time sail a few years ago - the grey tug in the photograph (if you can make it out) is a tug called Growler, I dont know what happened to this tug - it disappeared a while ago from the scene. The red boat was modelled on the River Tyne fire boat - I dont know who the Boston stern trawler belongs to ;D The sun tug between Growler and I think its the Smit Nederland was a lad's first scratch build and he made a good job of it. It was good fun sailing at night, only problem was we had some very weird looks from the drunks and we were asked once or twice by the Police what we were doing :-[

Another Nelson,

Riggers24 and Johno: nice to know that I'm not the only one who'll brave a bit of weather! 1/24th Fairmile type D in a force 6-7, Poole Park Lake, April this year. Heading into the sea and a following see were no problem, but quartering and beam on were scary: thought I was going to have to get very wet, but she made it! I'd post some pics, but I can't find them now - doh!

Some very realistic looking pix there, johno!

Hiya John
One of these days all will be answered, As I said in the pm I sent you, I asked one and all at the lake when I was up there a couple of weeks ago and still came away non the wiser . In the meantime lets just say that the bearded and sandalled self appointed swan policeman is not on my xmas card list and as for the crowning glory, it's so long since I've had the hair-net off that I've forgotten wot's under there ! !! ::)
best regards
MikeK

Found the 'rough weather' trials pics of my 1/24th Fairmile Type D. Quality isn't good, sorry about that. Sequence taken from a video: view as 2 columns.

WOW, some really great models here. Here are a few of mine. For more models visit my site at http://www.towboatjoe.com/models.htm

Brilliant pics of your Fairmile type D, Mike. It would be very hard to tell if it was the real thing, the breaking wave as she is 'shipping 'em green' over the bow are so realistic
Best regards
MikeK

Hi Mike (Flag-d) nice set of pictures you have there. Its nice to see a modeler not afraid to take his boat out in a spot of bad weather it just needs a bit of thought when building on how to fit the top. The Severn class lifeboat in the link is built to self-right just like the real thing so it would have to be really rough not to put it on the water. ::) ::)

Its not just tugs that can pull thing Lifeboats can too. http://www.lifeboatmodels.co.uk/severntowing.htm ;)
What is the biggest thing anyone has pulled or pushed with a model ?? :o
-
Johno, MikeK
It was scary :o out there, I can tell you! Beam on, she rolled really wildly and I was sure I was going to get very wet indeed: this is definitely NOT a self righting design! As the original full size design was created to cope with North Sea weather, I thought I'd better try her out in a bit of a sea. Overall I was very impressed. The biggest problem was launching and recovery: my local lake is concrete walled all around, hence both for'd torp tubes now damaged. Oh well, I'll put it down to battle damage!
I love to see models being really tested by the elements, powered or sail. It is very satisfying to know that your model can cope with what the elements can throw at it. Also tests building skills and lets you see how strongly you really did build it. No matter how confident you are (and I wasn't especially as I had a change of clothes in the car!), you can't be certain!
I have a couple of vid clips which I'll try and post sometime soon, or at least link to.
Thanks for the kind comments.

Hi Boatmanic,
wich scale is the vessel? There are some nice rc-tanks out there, tamiya is 1:16, Heng-Long 1:16, Bandai 1:15 (sometimes on eBay) and Academy is 1:25. It is even possible to make a 1:35 or a 1:87 tank witch rc.

If you look on ANTICS, they sell pairs of WWII 'table top' tanks that are R/C, pity the LCM isn't 1/72, could have these to grace the decks
though at the moment they are gathering dust on to of the PC.

sorry forgot the pic

was thinking of using these on a DSRV style of vessel

Hi Everyone here are a few shots of my models at home in my pool in Sydney Australia, and a couple of shots of them on the lake, I am at present working on a 1/100 scale model of the Galileo Galilei. The shots already posted by everyone are great.
Cheers Dennis/Galileo ;)

You haven't got mine on there yet Peter, its the one above your thread. If I can stay out of hospital long enough and the water level doesn't drop much more I will get it on the water at Setley. Might even see you there with your camera. If I've got the ballast right it might even float.
Cheers Richard ::)

Hi Richard, are you talking about the Snowberry? I'm at the pond most Sundays but have to earn my model boat funds during the week! But if I'm there and the weather's favourable I'll be taking snaps,

Thanks, Steve. Among my favourites are the photos of the Salamis square rigger in the sailing ships album. Howver you have to admire the liners in the passenger vessels section. The QM2 model has actually been used in the swimming pool on the QM2!
Cheers,
Peter

Thats the one Peter. Actually did it as the Saucy as there seems to be a lot of Snowberrys around. Wanted to be a bit different.
I've been a bit under the weather lately but will hopefully make it to Setley in the near future.
See you there . Richard ;D ;D
