Hello there fellow Mayhemers. Here's my latest project, thought it was about time I got round to doing something with my 8ft supertanker hull I acquired at Wicksteed last year. The hull measures 8' x 13" or 2.44m x 0.33m, so a fair size. I have thought about chopping it in half but it will just squeeze into my car as it is so it's staying in one piece for now. It's intended to be a good boat for me to sail and for tug towing events etc.
It's going to have interchangeable deck sections and superstructures, for starters I'm going to do a supertanker. I'm also planning container ship, LNG carrier and general bulk carrier sections. Power will be from a 12v Marlin geared motor driving a 90mm 4 blade prop on a M6 shaft, biggest prop I could fit on it. There will be 3 Rabosech 22mm thrusters, 2 on the bow, 1 on the stern. Made a start on the rudder, that's about it! Will be fitting strengthening stringers and bulkheads over the next week. Dave. :-))
-
WOW ! I'll be watching this one alright :o
...does it fit in your workshop ? or are you going to construct a covered slipway...good luck with this one. :-))
Regards,
Ray.
-
Hey Dave, its cracking looking hull that one, on my container ship i didnt bother with the stern thurster, I used a big becker rudder and it turns great and also put a home made bow thurster with what I think is a 540 motor and it works well.
Have you tryed ballast yet? Mine took 112 lbs (50KG)
David
-
Nice project, how are you going to launch that beast?
Free flood ballast might be worth thinking about.
Ian
-
I hope it doesn't do what it's prototype real ship did, Dave.....
MT Prestige, which that hull is modelled from split in two in rough weather in the Bay of Biscay in 2002 with 80,000 tonnes of crude on board
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestige_oil_spill
That hull was made from plugs I did for Dave Metcalf to make moulds from for a student studying the stresses on the hull of the real ship at the London Science and Technology College...she was actually modelled at 1;100 scale.
Have yet to see one built so get cracking, me 'arty

Hi there guys, have you recovered from your hols yet Neil? The hull won't fit in my work area but I've got the garage. Hopefully the weather will stay nice so can do the stringers and bulkheads outdoors, that can be done in a day. All the detail work will be in sections which will fit on my workbench, (hopefully). I know the hull is 1/100 but I'll be using 1/96 scale fittings for convenience and there will be hardly any difference as it's not going to be based on a specific vessel. As for ballast, I know it's going to want a fair amount. It's either going to be free flooding compartment or ballast tanks that I'll pump water into at the lakeside. I don't want to be carrying piles of bricks about! More to come as soon as I've made more progress, Dave. :-))
-
have you recovered from your hols yet Neil? , Dave. :-))
hi dave.more or less..............been in the workshop the last couple o' days working on the ambulance boat.coming on slowly.
neil.
-
Look forward to seeing it. Russ is going be building the Severn, I've just not got the space to do it. {:-{ Bit of an irony that I can work on the bigger tanker though as it's in sections, take it easy, Dave. :-))
-
has he bought it off you..he must be raking it in , what with his new car, lol %% %% %%
-
Blimey I've just finalised how many shipping container sections I'm going to have to make. Based on 5 containers high it works out at 110 side panels, 108 top panels and if I do every end panel visable there'll be 720 of them! :o Think I'll just be doing the end panels at the bow and stern where they're clearly visable, that'll bring their number down to 120. Should keep me busy, glad I'm doing the tanker deck first! Dave. %)
-
Hello all, with working and going to the two shows yesterday and also dodgy weather I've not yet got round to fitting the stringers in the hull. I have however made a start on the main superstructure yesterday and today. It's all styrene, mainly 1mm with 1.5mm corner braces. The top of the wheelhouse is 2mm as it'll have a small motor for the radars and a battery holder attatched to it. It's all pretty much freelance after looking at loads of different photos on the web. I always keep a scale figure handy for reference and to keep everything in proportion. More to come soon, Dave. :-))
-
Really cant wait to see this build unfold :-))
Maybe later on next year will pick one of these up, have got the 6 foot tid atm but havnt got very far with her yet :-)
if i got one id be very tempted to put voiths in her just for something abit diffrent
-
The 6ft TID is a nice boat, Andy at MBD does some great boats, look forward to seeing that too. Voiths drive on tanker would be an interesting project. I look at the superstructure so far and starting to realise just how big this monster is going to be, for the container ship version there will be 5 blocks with 2 containers in a row, 5 high and 12 wide and another single block of containers at the bow. Hoping to do the stringers and bulkheads over next few days. I'll keep the pictures coming, Dave. :-))
-
More or less finished the main superstructure off today. Spotted the modern type lifeboats below at Haydock Park on Saturday on a very nice modified Deans Marine Celastine, (hope you don't mind the me putting the picture on here). I was wondering if anyone knows a dealer who sells or these or similar in 1/96, 1/100 scale? I'll drop Ron Dean an email to see if he'll let me have a pair anyway. Failing that I'll just scratch build some. More to come soon, Dave. :-))
-
Hi Dave you got it started then looking good mate.
Had a busy weekend testing the Type 45
See you soon

Hi there Alan, hope you're both ok? Yes finally got going on it. Going to be bit of a monster but small compared with your Daring! O0 Should see you soon as long as I've still got my car, take it easy, Dave. :-))
-
I would say you are from finished with all them windows to cut out !! %%

looking forwad to seeing this

It gets harder to get sailing now, this monster will take up most of our jetty at Westport {-) {-) {-) what with you and Russ there will be no room for the rest of us !!!

It'll ok Les, we're building an offshore terminal for it. O0 {-) O0 On a serious note though, I'm probably going to make some kind of floating jetty for it so it'll be kept out of the way when moored up. It'll be available for tug towing too so that should be interesting, should be down again tomorrow with Our Lass 2 weather permitting of course, Dave. :-))
-
More? :-))
-
Hi there all, progress has been slow lately due to the weather, work and going away. Seems every day I've been off it's been raining so unable to work on it outside, been very frustrating to say the least, Dave. {:-{
-
Hello all, finally got some more done today. Fitted the base for the ballast and running gear and started on the bulkheads. More to come tomorrow, weather permitting, Dave. :-))
-
Hi Dave. I'm loving this build and can't wait to see it finished. If you are still after some 1:96 scale lifeboats I have some I could send you.

Hi there Ali, if you've got a pair of lifeboats I could buy off you that would be great, I'll send you a message. I've managed to fit some of the bulkhead, motor is in place. I keep getting held up with bad weather. Got a few days off now so hoping to do lots more to her. Many thanks again, Dave. :}
-
Hi Dave. Yes I'll get another one cast for you. I want to start selling them for £4 each, that way you get a pair for a about a tenner including P+P. Never done this before so I don't know how to go about payment but I'm sure we can sort something out.
Speak to you soon Ali.
-
What size are the lifeboats at 1:96th Ali ? I could be interested if you go into production. PM me if reqd.
-
Well I've done some more to her, and yes she is in the kitchen but as I've got house to myself for a few days it'll be fine. The bulkheads are cut out and all ready to be bonded in place (not something I'll do inside with the smell!). I'll make a start on cutting the holes for the bow thrusters later. She's very rigid even though not all fully bonded together yet, suprising really. Thought I'd put the last one in of one of my Yorkie's Kimmy, she's quite happy on board! More to come soon, Dave. :-))
-
she looks a very reluctant crew member Dave................
looks a great build. neil. :-))
-

looks a great build. neil. :-))
Hi Neil, she was fine. Might build a 'dog' compartment and sail them round the lake too! It's just getting heavier and heavier with the more structure I'm adding to it. She'll be rigid enough once all bonded together and deck in place. Think I'm going to use a pump to put water ballast aboard in tanks or use a couple of old car batteries, I haven't worked out how much weight I'll need to get her down to the waterline yet but it'll be a lot! One good thing with tankers is they're not always sailing fully loaded!
Will see you at Blackpool on Sunday if you're about? I'll be there from opening time with a couple of other club members. Russ isn't coming to the show, never does this one. See you soon, Dave. :-))
-
Dave,
Got it wrong, thought your build was a tanker not a Dog boat %) %) %)
-
I have built a 10ft containership and it takes 4 normal car batteries as ballast . I use one of them for electrical power .I have fitted two 500 gallon /hr bilge pumps as a bow thruster. The ship also is built in two haves to make it easier to transport too . I also found a good site with container plans

Loch ness, next year with her???? {-) {-) {-) {-) or perhaps the channel dash, %% %% %%
I'll be there both days as the LBES has asked me to put the Clyde on show, and run her up on the pond......so couldn't resist making a fool o' myself when it doesn't work, lol.
it'll be PM on sunday though.

Loch Ness-No. Maybe somewhere just North of you next year but South of the border, hmmm??????? :-X See you Sunday I'm sure, be nice to see Clyde in the water again. Dave. :-))
-
Lookin good number 6 :-))
shes going to be quite something when finished
-
Thanks offshore, shes certainly going to be big if nothing else! Bonded in the 2 main bulkheads fore and aft and some of the stringers. I'll fix the other 2 bulkheads in place when I've sorted the ballast out, I may leave them removeable actually so can reposition them if I need to. I've run out of plywood and fibreglass now so won't do much more today, I'll get some on my way home from work tomorrow. Think last 2 photos start to show what she's going to turn out like. Dave. :-))
-
Oh my gawd!! :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Oh my gawd!! :-)) :-)) :-))
That was a quick reply! Had enough of work today I guess? O0 I'm going have dive in the bath, still manage get fibreglass and resin stuck to me everywhere despite wearing gloves etc! %) %) %)
-
Started on the bow and stern thrusters today. Not a job I was looking forward to but made relatively simple after borrowing a 22mm hole cutter off Russ (6705russell), thanks Russ, saved me loads of time and hassle. They're ready to go in, I'm going to go over the joints with some fibreglass resin before I fix them in place. Dave. :-))
-
Managed to fibreglass the bow and stern thrusters in place this morning before the heavens opened. Won't get much more done today with this weather. Dave. {:-{
-
Had a nice delivery off the postman this morning. Have had my 2 lifeboats off fellow Mayhemmer wartsilaone, they're great and just what I was looking for, bargain price too. When I do the container sections I'll do a couple with your name on, many thanks, Dave. :-))
-
they do look nice Dave....lovely little models in their own rights. :-))
-
Hi Dave. I'm glad the lifeboats got to you in one piece. It's the first time them on another ship and they look pretty good for size.
Keep up the good work :-)).
Ali.
-
looking great dave, shame about the weather :/ i hope its sunny up there soon so we can see somemore of this build :-))
-
Well the weather hasn't been too bad today so managed to do some more. I've finished fibreglassing in the rest of the rear stringers in place and fitted a piece of ply for the rudder servo. The ballast for initial trials will consist of 12x 4 pint plastic milk bottles filled with sand. This is just so I can find out just how much weight is needed to get her on the waterline. Once this is established I'll be fitting 2 or 3 water tanks that can be filled at the lakeside by means of a 12v pump and emptied same way. I'll make the tanks removeable so they can be properly rinsed out when back at home. The centre bulkhead is removeable as are the wooden strips across the base that are at present separating the milk bottles. Working tomorrow so should be doing more on Tuesday and Wednesday, hoping to start fitting the deck and get the thrusters finished off. All things considered she's not really that heavy, bearing in mind she's 8ft long, just a bit awkward to handle! Dave. :-))
-
That's looking very smooth Dave. You've achieved a nice finish. :-)) I'd be very interested to see the weight testing and water adjustments at the lake. Bet you're looking forward to that.
ken
-
Why not fill the four pinters with water instead of sand?
Much easier and true to the water ballast you will eventually use.
Ned
-
Hi guys, thanks Ken. Hmmm trials should be 'interesting' to say least. They'll be done in shallow water with waders on! O0
Only reason was going to use sand Ned was that I've been put off using water after same sort of bottle leaked in my Our Lass 2 during trials and soaked everything before I could get it out. Mind you the deck section will be off for trials so if one does decide to leak it could be quickly removed, would probably be easier to be honest, Dave. :-))
-
If they are standing upright and are treated gently should not be a problem
but laid on the side the caps are not the best water stoppers
Ned
-
They're a right pain those bottles and have to lie on their side. Think I was up your way yesterday Ned? Delivering to Goole and Hull near the docks in my truck. Dave. :-))

Hi Dave. I'm working on some working gravity davits to fit them lifeboats. They have quite a low profile so they should fit nicely if you interested.

Hi there Ali, yes would like to have a look at them. Any chance of sending some pictures? I'm off for the next 2 days so I'll hopefully be getting some more done, Dave. :-))
-
Started fitting the deck today, rear 2 sections are fitted with access hatches for rudder and batteries and superstructure. Hoping to fit the main section tomorrow with access for the ballast section. Dave. :-))

evening dave
any chance you'll be bringing it to warwick

Hi Phil, hope you're ok? Won't have enough room in the car to bring it with other boats Im bringing along. It'll be at Mayhem next year and hopefully a few other shows.
It would be big enough sail down to Warwick in Neil! O0
-
Done some more today, got most of the deck fitted in place. Majority of the work is under the surface and can't be seen unfortunately. Did the last piece of the bow on the workbench with it going dark earlier now. Dave. :-))
-
Hi Dave, she coming along well.Just come up from the work myself.
Looks like you got a lot done.

So thats why you did,nt come down the lake this morning. Work got in the way. O0 {-) {-)
looking nice Dave :-))

-
Hi there Alan and John, yes got quite a bit done to her over the weekend, maybe first sea trial next weekend fingers crossed. I didn't like the look of the weather on Sunday so decided to crack on with her, should be down the lake on Wednesday weather permitting. Dave. :-))
-
Lots more done over last 2 days though doesn't look like it at first glance. Deck is all fitted and the hull has been trimmed flush to deck level, got all marks and knocks off the hull that have happened during the build too. That was a job and a half, tedious and long winded, took most of yesterday. The thrusters have all been trimmed and are now flush with the hull. She's now virtually ready for painting. I just need to add a pair of 'bulges' on the bow where the anchors will be fitted and a strip of styrene where the 2 deck levels at the bow meet. I ran out of time as it started to look very overcast so have packed it in for today. Detail fittings will be added once she's painted.
Anyone any ideas for colour schemes? Remember it's going to be a tanker and a container ship, possibly LNG carrier too. I was thinking of Maersk colours as I like the blue and she'll go well with my Sydney Star. More to come soon, Dave.
-
Thats what I call a Dog boat. {-) {-)
coming along nicely Dave, these winter months play havoc with outside model making ( never enough daylight )

Sure is and armed to the teeth at that %) %) %)
-
Aye, she's truly terrifying, you'd be licked to death! O0 Weather doesn't look too good and I'm working later so don't think I'll be doing much outside today, I might get some of the pipework done for the tanker deck. Roll on summer I say. %%
-
Not managed to do much lately with working, poor weather and getting another 4 boats ready to go to Warwick but have managed some work. I've decided to start on some of the deck fittings, today I've made a pair of anchor winches using those on my Sydney Star as a rough basis. Off to Warwick on Thursday so may see some of you down there hopefully. Dave. :-))
-
Hi there all, well I'm just letting folks know that the supertanker is now under a different flag of ownership. She's now sailing under the '6705russell' banner, I unfortunately had to let her go to help pay for my dog to have a major operation after Tesco pet insurance refused to pay out....but that's another long story and I advise anyone to give them a wide berth as they'll find any excuse not to pay out. I've also had to part with my much loved Our Lass 2, HMS Exploit and other bits and pieces. {:-{ A sad couple of months on the boating front but my little Yorkie Jojo is now doing fine and is back to her own self, so it's been worth it. :-) Next project, that'll be finishing a part built 1/72 scale Prinz Eugen measuring 10'6" long! Thanks for letting me buy her off you Russ, there will be a thread starting on it soon, Dave. :-))
-
I'm sorry to hear you unfortunate news Dave. It's good to see Jojo doing well, Hope she appreciates what you've for her.
Ali.
-
Hi Dave very glad JoJo is on the mend, I could,nt help but chuckle about you having the Prinze Eugen of Russ.
That will keep you buisy.
Hope to see you down the lake soon.
john
-
Thanks for the comments guys, I'd have sold my whole fleet to sort my daft dog out. She's certainly getting back to her old mischievous ways! Was going to pop down the lake this morning but had to collect Prinz E and weather wasn't very good. We were forced to go to McDonalds for a coffee though!
-
So glad your cute four legged friend is on the mend. Get your teeth into a good build as it's great therapy.
Hope you picked up extra coffee sticks. %) %)

Love it love it love it :} very nice job and its great to see the model gettin there, i do kinda wish i had goten the tanker over the tid {:-{ maybe one day i will swop
Keep up the great work

Hi all,
I have done some small works on the tanker since I took over the build, I will be making this as an LNG carrier, thinking of using the plastic food bowls as the gas containers....
Russ
-
WOW that is looking good, have you got a big car to put it in.My one just fiitted in my car.
Very nice build.
John B
-
Hi John
Yes I have a big Jeep and with all seats down it will slide in no problem....
Russ
-
Failing that it'll fit in my car. The roof box I'll be making for Prinz Eugen will also fit the tanker with 2ft to spare.
Dave. :-))

Food bowls as gas containers.( just an excuse to order meals from the takeaway)
Your secret is safe with us Russ. O0 {-) {-)

Hi Dave, you could use the roof box lid as a loading/offloading ramp. You just need a little motorised winch
on top to drag them back in the box. O0 {-) {-)

She finished yet? :-)
Daniel
-
Hi Dan
Unfortunately Dan I have only added some decals from Barrys Model Lettering, still on the lookout for some bigger food bowls to make the gas vessels....
Russ
-
Fine lookin model :-))
She looks very nice as shes is though, has she seen water yet?
Daniel

Your takeaway food bowl halves' usage as gas calottes is a brilliant idea.
However, could you get them in a size with a wee bit wider diameter?
I think on a tanker one wouldn't waste that much extra space around the tanks.
Virtually, a tanker's hull is faired around the tanks after they have been arranged in a way that makes fullest use of the available space (i.e. displacement).
That's why the waterlines of ULCCs exhibit unfavourably high curvatures and buttocks with steep angles in the run (stern) which cause considerable headaches to the ship hydrodynamisists when designing an efficient propulsion.

That quote alone has given me the most seering of considerable headaches!! %% %% %%
could you explain in simple modellers terms please, as I for one haven't got a clue as to what you are on about {:-{ {:-{ {:-{
Looking very nice by the way, Russ...........haven't seen one built since I made the plugs, some years ago.

I think he means tankers exhibit lines similar to a brick, so as to maximize the volume available to carry crude ;)
Of course the old dome style LNG tankers have been superseeded with membrane style tanks which can maximise volume of liquified gas
some interesting pics here of the new tankers the inside of a membrane tank ad a ship without a bow :o

Oh, I apologize for not having read through the whole thread carefully enough.
But your VLCC gas tanker will be an impressive model, no matter what size of bowls you will incorporate.
I think tankers and bulkers are seldom picked as a topic for model making and thus are a rare sight on model boat ponds.
Quite undeservedly, because they are an interesting type of ship, and some designs may even be considered to reveal a certain beauty,
like this more handy size gas carrier (http://www.rc-modellbau-schiffe.de/wbb2/thread.php?postid=256365#post256365) which I would fancy if I ever built a model of a crude carrier.
-
I think he means tankers exhibit lines similar to a brick, so as to maximize the volume available to carry crude ;)
Yes, exactly.
They have the highest block coefficients (which is the ratio of the volumetric displacement of the hull vs. the block that would be formed when multiplying its main dimensions, Lpp, B, T, and hence a measure of fulness) among sea-going vessels.
This makes them especially susceptible to flow separation and poor propeller inflow.
Thus much research has been devoted to the propulsion issues of single screw high block coefficient vessels (viz. in many ship model basins like e.g. MARIN (http://www.marin.nl/web/Ships-Structures/Merchant-vessel-Work-boat/Oil-tankers.htm))
-
Spotted these possiblities in Homebase. They are sold in three s. Might be lucky.
-
Thanks Arrow but with the assistance of Gribeauval in Asda last Friday Spotting some new plastic camping salad bowls I am now sorted....
Cheers
Russ
-
Friday??? its now sunday evening wheres the pics of a finished model :}
All the best
Daniel

The salad bowls, err I mean the bespoke gas vessels have been sprayed up but not sure if i like the colour or not yet? i will start making the gantrys up this week....
Russ
-
Maybe im mad but a darkish yellow might look nice? ( though i do like the clean cut of the white ) Colour does look abit much sometimes
Daniel
-
We must be on the same wavelength, as soon as I got back this afternoon i decided to spray a dull yellow....
Russ
-
Looking good Russ, what's 'salad' ?
-
Something me and you should eat more of mate! {-)
-
Looking good Russ. Is that salad you had on your triple beef burger. {-)
john

Haha thats awesome spot on :-)) Great minds and all
Shes looking rather nice sir
Daniel
-
I will be fitting the two lifeboats either side of the superstructure shortly, does anyone have an close ups of the framework the boats sit on and how they slide off into the water?
Many thanks
Russ
-
Hi Russ,
I should say it depends whether your model will be fitted with the ordinary fully enclosed lifeboat which will be launched through gravity type davits.
Here's an example of such (http://www.fassmer.de/fileadmin/user_upload/Downloads/Lifeboats/tel_gmr_tgmr.pdf) from the German boat yard Fassmer.
On the other hand today free fall boats or "satellites" are common, especially on smaller chemical or LNG tankers.
They need to be released over the stern by rolling down a sliding ramp unlike the conventional boats in davits which are released to the ship's sides.
I think due to the impact when they hit the water surface that the satellites are restricted to a certain height, which is often exceeded on the VLCCs and ULCCs with their higher freeboard (especially in ballast) and their high raised deck houses.
I think that you can find out the limits by studying the rules for lifeboats of the classification societies such as Lloyds Register, Germanischer Lloyd, American Bureau of Shipping or Det Norske Veritas.
Here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xve2rU_GGo) and here a spec sheet for a tanker freefall lifeboat (http://www.noreq.no/files/LBF_doc_NY/LBF_680T.pdf) from a Norwegian manufacturer which at the end contains drawings of the boat.
Just search for spec sheets from the notorious lifeboat manufacturers' websites.
There are plenty out there.
Edit: Forgot to mention, Schat (http://www.schat-harding.com/) is a well known manufacturer of davits.
-
Thanks for that, some good links there, the lifeboats will be side mounted, I have attached some pics, also made the helipad up...
Russ
-
Looking good, hadn't really thought of a helipad but looks great. Beginning wish hadn't sold it now, lol. I'll be starting back on the Prinz Eugen soon now I've got a workshop set up.
Dave. :-))

Helipad, ? I thought it was a football field. {-)
Great to see you posting again Dave.
Workshop ? dont you mean boat production dept.
hope to see you down the lake soon then mate.

Hi John, hope you're doing ok? Yep have got a work area set up again. I'll be down soon hopefully, been away for couple of weeks and was ill when was going come down the other Sunday, typical! Working a lot during the week so Wednesdays are difficult! I'll try pop down on Sunday morning, still got that cap for you, take care. Dave. :-))

See you Sunday then Dave, all being well :-))
I should be bringing the trawler cat down.

Don't forget it's Steering competition this weekend John..... :-))

Russ,
sorry to break into your thread, but did you manage to suss out the Lifeboat colours and type of paint you used on the "Margaret" Please?
thanks,

Thanks for that Russ, I will give it a miss this weekend then.
The weather is going to be rubbish anyway.

Hi Russ,
more by accident I came past this thread in the forum section of Shipspotting.com (http://forum.shipspotting.com/index.php/topic,10445.0.html).
It is about a grand (1/48th) free lance tanker model from scratch which started as a bulker.
But then the builder decided to convert her into a tanker because of all the challenging piping works on deck.
I thought this would interest you too.

Ralph

Now thats pretty big, never thought of building a model to carry kitchen paper rolls though!! %%

Ok I couldnt get my head around how to assemble the large containers so for now I have taken a different route and using pipework only, Eventually i will make a seperate deck with the gas containers so they will be interchageable. I sourced a toy helicopter out of my sons toy box, stripped it and resprayed in Coastguard colours.
Next step will be to make all the walkways...
Russ
-
Looking fantastic!!!
How are you going to transport her? :o
-
During short sunny breaks in the weather I have built the walkway around the superstructure and sprayed it all with satin white, funnel exhausts are fitted and these have pipes running down into the hull ready for the smoke machine, Matt vinyl has been cut into squares/rectangles to simulate the window openings and I have made up a forward mast with working mast light, I have also fitted the anchor tubes and hopefully I will have working anchors, cracking on with detail work now..
Russ
-
Love it!! :-))
Keep up the good work
Dan
-
Looking great Russ! :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Its looking great :-)) I think I prefer it with the pipes on deck, looks a bit busier.
-
Hi, looks good, where did you get the crew figure from?
regards Roy
-
Roy
The crew figure is just a 1/72 German navy figure that I am using to gauge certain parts of the build, stanchions, railings etc..
Russ
-
Looks a fantastic build this, I'm considering one myself when my current builds are finished. I was looking at the models by design hull...but could anybody shed any light on this for me?
-
yes adam.....I made the plug originally a few years ago and Dave Metcalf had the plug moulded into a hull......it was to be used by a student at the London college of Science and technology for his 3rd year degree course for tank testing into why the actual ship the MV Prestige ( google it) split in two halves in the Bay of Biscay and dumped 80000 tons of oil into the north Atlantic before she sank.
the Hull was built from shipyard plans to 1:100 scale......don't know much more about her except that the plug was made in three weeks of a lot of sweat and grime .......luckily the summer was decent and sunny that year, lol
-
Hi Neil, Many thanks for that reply - much appreciated!
I'm glad you mentioned the scale, as I would be making it to 1/96th when I do get around to ordering it! (and hiding the bill from SWMBO!).
Thanks for the info. I had heard of the MV Prestige but never really looked it up before now.
-
Hi there folks, just an update. The big one is now back with it's creator. I'll have it up and running for this season, how I'm going to carry it is another matter, think I'll be making a big ply box soon...
Dave. :-))
-
nice to see, Dave. good man. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Are their any more photos of the build progress? Just wanted to see the outcome.... %)
-
Nice to know that you have it back Dave, yer gonna need a bigger car!
Mick F
-
Hi there guys, there's not been huge progress done on it since the last posts by 6705russell.
I'll be doing some more work to it over the weekend and figuring out just what's left to be done. Mainly it's small detail work and the internal wiring, both of which have been started.
The main point of note is that with work done it's now going to be 1/72 scale as it's nearly impossible to revert to 1/96 with work done but it looks great on 1/72 scale.
Of course my main plan was to have interchangeable tops for it, which will still be happening but priority is to get it finished as the supertanker, get it on the water and use it! Plans are already made for the container ship top for it, drew them up yesterday... O0
Yep Mick, cars are never quite big enough!
At 8' it's not practical to wedge it in the car, I managed to scrape the paintwork just picking it up yesterday. So I can see a day spent making a sturdy but not to heavy (queue laughter) box to go on the car roof. I'll be making it big enough so it will be able to carry 9'6" Prinz Eugen too, not both at once though, lol.
I'll probably post some more pics later or tomorrow,
Dave. :-)) :-))
-
Looking forward to an update Dave.
My next project is based on the hull from Models By Design - after i've atleast nearly completed my current builds!
I have the same problem transporting my 1/96th HMS Illustrious - she's a fairly big girl and "just" fits in the car - but it's tempting fate for sure! I'll scratch it or break something one day if i'm not careful!
:-))
-
Good afternoon all, some pictures of the current state of play as promised.
I've finished the railings on the stbd side today, they just need painting and fixing in place. I've taken off the L N G lettering on the sides as they won't be appropriate when it's in the container ship guise.
I'm going to do more of the smaller detail parts this afternoon. I also need to sort out the points for towing her, as I always said I'd be happy for tugs to have a play with her, so long as they're careful!
Dave. :-))
-
Looking great :-)) be nice to see on the water under it's own steam
-
Very nice model ok2
-
ONE VERY NICE BUILD :-)) she will be great to tow
-
Thanks guys, quick question for the tug boys.
Is it best for it to have 2 towing bollards, port and starboard on the bow and stern for you to hook onto or a single central one on bow and stern? There's nothing fixed in place yet for towing so am just getting some ideas.
Dave.
-
Some more done today, built the bridge roof and made up some radars and aeriels, radars will rotate when I get a motor. I'll be getting some more 1/72 scale fittings at the next show I get to. Finished the drop lifeboat structure on the stbd side. I've cut out thin sheets of styrene for the walkways around the bridge, sprayed them and stuck them down. Much easier than masking it off and painting it!
I've ordered the 4 esc's today I'll need, 3 for the thrusters and 1 for main drive. Hopefully they'll arrive to be fitted next weekend.
Dave. :-))
-
looking very nice Dave.
john
-
Love the walkways painting idea - very neatly done :-))
Regards,
Ray.

I am so glad to see you have it back where it belongs, I know you went though lots of up' & down's. It must feel great to be getting near launch time. In the end I am sure it was all worth the effort, Mick B.
-
Agree with the other comments - great looking model. Will look fantastic on the water.
-
Hi guys, just a quick update. It's all wired up now with 3x 15A escs for the 3 thrusters running on either 6 or 7.2v. Main drive has a 25A esc running on 12v. She'll be ready for a maiden voyage once have a ply box made up for it. Can't put photos on as laptop has died.

Hi there all, many thanks everyone for all the wishes of congratulations and advice. O0. Im sure we'll have a great day whatever the weather throws at us.
Thanks Neil for those props, you're a top man. I'll hopefully be starting the Clyde soon now the tanker is nearly done. I will give you something towards them though or a donation to RNLI, Id feel too guilty otherwise. :-) I'll catch up with you at some point, your lifeboats looking great as usual.
As for the tanker I've not yet tested the smoke unit as to be honest Im not too sure how it works as got no instructions with it. :embarrassed:
Dave. :-) :-)) :-)

If you do get back to building an LNG top for this try one without the ball tanks like the one on this site

More pics now I've figured how to upload using my mobile. Started the container ship top too, she's quite a size with it in place. Will hopefully finish it over next few weekends, will be taking her to Warwick hopefully.
Dave.
-
thats a big beastie Dave! Looks like you will have to leave the Missus home!
Mick F O0 %) %)
-
Hi Mick, yep she's one big beast, can only just fit it in the Picasso! Will be just me going to Warwick anyway.
Dave.
-
I wondere'd how you were going to make the containers dave.......would have cost a fortune buyng them.............brilliant idea you came up with.
neil.
-
Full colour graphics of containers are available on the net some cost very little some free. I`ll try to see where I got these. The corrugated surface is a quite convincing print but I`ve done a few with corrugated paper painted and simple markings. Cut up and stuck onto the big box will be the finishing touch.

That's not good Mick, hope mine is a bit more structurally sound! O0
Thanks for the links guys, saw the printed containers but would be awkward to seal and fix them to rigid box. Im planning to get some vinyl lettering and logos made up for the containers.
Dave. :-))
-
Photos for my signwriter, lol.
-
Well she's nearly finished, some may notice the funnel has changed to Maersk blue, (looks lighter than actually is). The rest of the black area of hull will be resprayed soon hopefully.
I'm going to have the markings for the containers specially made up as I want to keep it as waterproof as I can. These will be ordered soon and should provide that finishing touch.
Dave.
-
Wow Dave, that is some big beastie! Good job you are a lorry driver, you will need it to transport her lol.
Looking good though.
Mick F
-
No need to repaint the hull - Maersk charters containerships occasionally; the funnel gets a repaint and 'Maersk' is added to the name.
And, in a near-miraculous coincidence, here's a photo of just such a ship: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1049827 (http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1049827)
Tom
-
That's interesting bit of information, didn't realise they did that too. I'll probably respray the black anyway as I like the blue colour scheme and it'll stand out a bit better than black. Plus I've already bought the paint, it won't take too long to do anyway.
Dave. :-))

Tom
Not so much chartered technically for this one (and her sisters), the owner/operator company was a Maersk aquisition, and as you suggest, Maersk in their vanity eventually stick maersk infront or behind (if it's a Danish vessel).
I sailed on this one a couple of times, on her second voyage actually, as well as one of the sisters.
-
Seasons greeting fellow Mayhemers.
I've now marked up the containers, got a few more left to do yet and sorted the funnel out. I'm hoping for a decent weekend so I can get the hull repainted soon. I know the lettering is slightly larger than would appear in real life but this was intended as I wanted it to stand out and be able to be read on the water.
Many thanks to Barry Sullivan at Barry's Model Lettering for doing such a great job with all the decals, I'll hopefully be taking it to a few shows next year. Didn't attend much this year due to work commitments.
Dave.
-
Looking good Dave,
if you add much more to her,you will need to carry it on your truck! Look forward to seeing it somewhere!
Mick F
:-)) :-))

Agreed Mick, how about one of these next?? Would be around 4.1m, 13.5ft long at 1/96 scale, am tempted....

At 1/48 scale
-
%) ,,,Nick ...@ 1:48...someone has some explaining here please ........ %) ......Derek :P
-
NOW that would be great for the tug towing comps, though finding a lake big enough for it to turn in let alone sail on would be a challenge, most places I have seen would struggle to have a 7.5t truck enter and a fork lift and an ambulance - for the hernia gotten while lifting the batteries in {-)
-
Blimey I thought 96th scale was ambitious! I've not seen that one before, assume it's been made for Maersk as a static model? Would like to see more pics of it.

Hello
This fabulous model looks to be the one displayed at the new Danish maritime museum at Helsingør

There is just a problem to sail her as there is a hole on starboard side {:-{

Hmm thanks for the links to the site, don't think next project will be quite that big!
Nice and sunny today, though a bit cold I decided to risk respraying the hull after a couple of hours preparing it. Couple of pics below, hope you like the results. Going to refit the prop and rudder later on today.
Dave. :-))

Looking really smart now Dave.
No over spray on the little lady's bike I hope.

I'd be more bothered about the kitchen stools and what the misses has to say about the nice new Maersk blue legs {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Hi Neil, I got told off about us now having a multi coloured wheelie bin/boat painting stand, lol. The stools have a couple of carrier bags on them, more than my life's worth, he he. Rachel said I should have done it purple! The bike was far enough away....I hope.... %)

hi john is that a new tow? its looking good :-))

Blimey that's huge! :o I've not had much chance to sail Maersk Odyssey this year with work and transportation issues so sadly no on the water shots yet though I have sailed it in a 10ft pool!
I don't know where the time goes, she'll be in drydock until the spring I think.
Dave.

Great to see you back posting Dave, havent heard from you in a while.
