I notice "model warships" are attending as traders.
As a warship nut,  I`m alway interested in anything to do with the subject, is this a new trader on the scene?

A quick google gave a list of seven plus lots more hits, most near the end of the motorway, the rest about three or four miles from the Norbreck.  Caravan or tent?

The light is and always has been a problem but other than lowering the ceiling 15ft I can,t see what can be done unless every body rigs up their models to leds.. I have been experimenting with my camera for the low light and think I may have cracked it.. :}..

Just a thought  any Mayhem , Warship And Tugs site members how about a meet up for a few minutes say 1pm maybe near MMB's stand or similar ?

Think I'll pop along to the Norbreck for this one and have a nosey. Would be interested to see the Mountfleet range, particularly the Cruiser tug. Would be good to see speedline and Fleetscale too but I dont think either of them are attending.

At the club run bring n buy, there will be a choice.  Either a fixed fee on a sliding scale based on the asking price paid up front, or a ten percent charge on what it is sold for.  The ten percent goes to the RNLI.  Its complicated this year because in the past there has been a lot of whimpering from other show organizers that "Their fixed fee is less than our ten percent", usually ignoring the fact that theirs usually goes to club or show funds, ours is a donation by our members to the RNLI.  This year, at the request of the show organizer, the choice will be yours.
There is a probability that the Shipfinder General will be there as well.

Fixed fee is still open i.e. I cannot work anything out in order to decide A) What it is going to cost me or B) To go fixed or commission basis.

Can you elaborate on the sliding scale.

Hi there Peter, someone was selling a lot of George Turner stuff off at the Southern Model Airshow at the weekend. There wasn't a lot of left so doubt they will be at Blackpool. You never know, somebody else might end up doing his stuff if he sells the moulds off?? There are alternatives, what scale figures (I assume figures) are you after? Dave.  {:-{

To answer some of the points on here ...

There is a phone number of 01606 891999 for any show questions more than happy to answer as we cant keep our eye on every forum

There will be a number of extra lights this year ..as ever we cant get it right as some don't want anymore lights

George Turner has booked and is coming we have wrote that on the traders list... so why we need to confirm it again, but there you go. However if you want something specific perhaps a quick call to him...

On the basis you cant please all the people all the time, some were unhappy with the 10 percent on sale price so we changed and had a sliding scale that was lower than 10 percent around about 7 percent but some didn't like that either, bearing in mind that all the money goes to the RNLI ..I myself made a donation of 240.00 last year in total with gift aid that took it to 300.00

Anyway the idea is you come along with two prices or one price you if you are fixed in stone ..if its two prices one is what you would like and the other is a price you will take... unless its the fixed in stone one.  Now bear in mind your high price is what its marked up at, (and also remember some see a price and don't think or even want to haggle) ...Also remember the people selling will do all they can to achieve the best price as they want to raise as much as possible and we are looking at whether it can be gift aided so the RNLI benefit more.

So you can either pay 10 percent on the sale price whatever it is e.g. 225.00 sale will cost you £22.50 or as some people put prices to high...lets be honest when selling anything whether it be a model boat or a car or fridge freezer heck, everyone wants to get a good price but some put there prices too high.. So you can if you wish pay a 7 percent fee upfront sale or no sale non returnable

as an example a sensible priced boat vendor wants 250.00 but will take 220.00... the bring an buy lads do there best and end up with 225.00 as a sale price now if he had paid up front cause he was confidant it would sell then its 7 percent of the higher price...7 percent of 250.00 = £17.50 paid...if however the vendor is not sure it will sell (usually cause its priced a little high) then he can opt for 10 percent on sale so that same boat will cost him 10 percent of sale price 225.00 = 22.50...He would have saved a fiver paying upfront  A cast in stone price of 250.00 or any amount well thats definitely cheaper to do upfront...Your boat will be going to another  boat lover...no paypal fees and the commission isn't lining some internet auction sites pocket its going to the RNLI....

The idea is to get the boats more sensible priced, we have had years where someone has put something in with few raised eyebrows at 300.00 and would only go to 250.00 yet after a flurry on the Sunday around about 12.00 o clock because they haven't sold it, its gets dropped by the vendor to 150.00 and sold for 145.00 ...when what would have been better is to put it in originally at say 220.00 with a view to taking 180.00 it would have sold on the Saturday when more have chance to see a realistic price for more money than what it ended up with...

We like transparency and you cant get much more transparent than that

The folks selling his boat related stuff off said he was just going to be doing car stuff from now on. I thought he was retiring too, shame about the boat stuff, got a lot of his stuff myself. Dave.

Sorry, Im not being critical (might be being thick though  <*<) but I may be wanting to sell a couple of boats at this show.

If I wanted to do this, how do I go about it \ who do I need to let know etc etc? Although I live local, I currently work in Manchester so there's no way I could get stuff down to Norbreck 'Friday afternoon.' Can stuff be taken down on Friday evening?
TIA

With any show such as this, and in fact almost all model boat shows, the traders are either one man bands or cottage size concerns.  Until the show opens with them on site, nothing is certain.  This is a fact of life.  In the past we have had traders who have had their vehicles break down unexpectedly, sickness has struck, either the trader and/or a family member, in one case a vehicle was burglarized.  We have also had the occasional club who booked a lot of space and never showed up, and couldn't be bothered to let us know before, or apologize after.  When an announcement is made, it is safe to assume that the companies listed have agreed to attend.  Whether this turns out on the day is another matter.  Show organizers don't have any more knowledge than anybody else regarding anybody elses' situation or intentions unless the concern in question has actually contacted them, only that space has been booked and a deposit paid.
Which particular comments should be regarded as "sarcasm"?  I have not detected any ridicule or mockery in replies to your posts, just a heartfelt wish that good sense should be used.

I have spoke with George Turner and he is coming so barring fire pestelence or flood or any other major mishap he will be there I quote from teh horses mouth (not tahts he is a horse but to coin a phrase) I am going into slt cars but have  alot of boat prudcut so as Blackpool is my biggest show I do I am intending selling it all there' end quote

Forgive me it wast intended as a sarcastic remark it was merely to point out a more important point that you would be better asking him to bring what you are looking for if taht is your only reason for going to the show (Now it woukld be a shame itf its your only reason for going)

To explian what I mean... Macs Mouldings has just posted he will be there and we all have an idea of his product range barring some new ones and a cracking line up it is, the quirk (call it what you will with GT) is that he does have or did have an ever changing product range for sale...so even when he is there.... will he have brought what you want...but likley someone else willl ...Likely Macs Mouldings may have what you are looking for ???

LATE BREAKING NEWS LATE BREAKING NEWS LATE BREAKING NEWS

We have just had confirmation from Horizon Hobby or at least their UK distributor of the same name that they are attending the show, to show off not only their range of Spektrum radios and all other things that they do in that line but also there new PRO boat range

Where we are going to put them goodness knows .. the floor plan is being re arranged slightly.....agian  ah!!! they will fit there....

As a footnote and in avodance of all doubt because they are a distrubutor who do not sell to the public they wont actually be selilng from their stand but their products can be bought at the show on other stands and they will happily demonstrate products and direct you where you may purchase probably at some show special prices

Hi,
I was selling George Turner’s stuff on his behalf at the Hop Farm and as mentioned there wasn’t a lot left because we had sold most of it! There is still plenty of stock in George’s storage which is available on his website by mail order.
Yes, George is into slot cars, see his website, but he will be selling his figures etc. at Blackpool and Warwick. After Warwick there will be no further shows and sales will be via the website only.
It is worth mentioning that like many other small specialist companies, George Turner Models is a one man operation.
Hope this helps to clarify the situation.
Dave

Sadly, as mentioned before on this and other forums and from personal experience, George Turner has a very poor track record of replying to emails and other forms of communications  sent to him on the www, so how is he ever going to sell his stuff on the web if he doesn't reply to people's questions.

just a point of interest and bone of contention for quite a few people on here.

If you are a friend of his, perhaps you could mention these facts and concerns to him before he is left with stock he can't sell.

just a quick note to anyone coming up to blackpool for the show this weekend....I recommended to Rottwieler a good fish and chip resteraunt to eat at in the heart of blackpool rather than the over priced Harry ramsdens on the prom, and he sent me a pm tonight, saying that to encourage others to a good chippie, I could publish his pm to me..........

hi Neil, thanks for the invite,I would love to take you up on it,IF I can persuede other half and our friend we are staying with, to go to a garden centre(which I hate) while I come to visit you!! Will give you a ring if at all possible.
Fish and chips were superb, wish I had room for the large portion. Nice clean premises, very friendly staff, and excellent prices.I will go back there again, before I go back home! You can copy and paste this onto mayhem if you wish,to encourage more people to go there. We looked in H...y Ra.....s,but at over £8 a portion, he is as bad as Rick Stein, and they are really nothing to write home about.Cheers, for now,
Mick

the fish and chip resteraunt, eat in or take away is called Yorkshire Fisheries on Topping Street, just up from the Winter Gardens and also behind the (what once was ) the Bus station on Talbot Road.... bon apetite.

Anyone want to recommend some cheapish but clean accomodation?

I took my Mother in law and wheelchair to Blackpool a few weeks ago - I even brought her back home! She insisted on having her fish and chips in a slot machine arcade cafe that we were just passing. I didn't expect much but I have to say it was a great fish in every way - and quite cheap. So it seems you don't have to go to a restraunt if you are cost concious - and want your pennies saved for the boat stuff.

Just seen a sign on a lamppost in Fleetwood this morning.

For all those taking Swmbo's and other halves who are not interested in model ships ( oh I'm sure there are some, {-) {-) %% %% %%) ......there is an Antique's fair on at the Hilton hotel on the promenade this sunday as well, so pack them off with the family heirlooms and jewels, and you have an excuse then to spend some money at the show, {-) {-) {-) {-)

Have to hand it to Neil and the Hilton Antiques fair..

Anyway some more late breaking news and in good old style of you can never tell whats turning up (see the George Turner bit ) George Turner is still coming incidentally but this morning  Yes two days to go to set up...we have just had a phone call from Mtroniks and they would like to come along and have a stand...Not selling... but their stuff can be bought on other stands ... Now they maybe struggling with the Saturday and they are working on it but they are definitely going to be there on the Sunday...

As a footnote manufactures and distributors like Horizon and Mtroniks will never sell at shows but usually their products are available elsewhere, so if you'd like a chat to Mtroniks come and say hello, wherever we manage to put them

Was talking to the chap who built the Talus M3 tractor, and he has also built a minature Caterpillar V8 working petrol engine for it,( he said it was easier to make it work off petrol than the diesel that it should be powered by) approximately 8 inches long plus working gear box, but is having problems at the moment moulding his own Distributer cap for the engine.....He told me that hopefully he'll have it ready working and installed for next year's shows.....from the workmanship that went into the Tractor, it will be just incredible.....what a fantastic machine the Talus was.

I assume that the Norbreck Catastrophe must rent their exhibition space at a low price otherwise I cannot see any advantage in having the show in a half-darkened hall with problematic parking. Will there be a prize in 2012 for the best illuminated model?

That being said the show as a whole was reasonable in terms of Trader attendance (once all costs are tallied it must be difficult to make a profit) and club representation and I left with my shopping list fairly well ticked off.

No - but it would be if we had to pay the Blackpool Tower Ballroom's idea of rent. I'm sure that if better and cheaper accommodation were to be available then Mark Williams would be onto it in a flash. No exhibition space is ideal in every respect; if it were then the rent would be exorbitant and the consequent door prices would deter most folk from visiting. I thought the lighting this year was an improvement over previous years and as regards the car parking, well - it is in Blackpool and it's still "illuminations" time so we can't expect exclusive use of the car park.

As for all these moans about lighting..........I find nothing wrong with lighting in the place......if it were any brighter half the detailing on the models would be lost for the glare reflecting on the gloss paint, lol....certainly on those bright orange and blue boats that some people keep bringing {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

I have been going for a few year now and never found the parking a problem, Always got into the front carpark, wait a few miniutes and a space is usualy available, I went to my car a few times throughtout Sunday and saw empty spaces. I believe that there is another carpark aroud the back ?.
We Went to the event at the Wintergardens Once,  it was quite a long walk from where we parked and you had to pay as well, or at least we did.

I think that the hotel could try to restrict those who do park in their carpark just to go into blackpool, and not use the hotel or visit the events at the hotel.

I'm not certain but isn't the hall really for ballroom dancing etc? there's a lot of dark walls and also the ceiling, if they painted these with lighter colour's..white would be good..the overall illumination (no pun %%) would be much improved for photography O0

This was my first visit to this venue.
Set off from home at 0530 and arrived at 0815 - plenty spaces in the front car park at that time. :-)
Was gonna camp over the weekend but "bottled out" - just as well really - ended up spending just over £100.00 on the Saturday alone !  :o

I found the venue comfortable and the stalls well laid out and was able to browse the Trade stands without getting squashed.
There was sufficient goods on sale to satisfy my needs for the coming winter.  :-))

The club stands were all accessible for viewing and the members manning them were polite and helpful.  O0

As for the lighting - I found it quite ample however, as I've not been to this venue before, I've nothing with which to make any comparison so I leave that to others to comment on.  8)

In conclusion, I consider this Model Boat Show to be well worth attending and will be there again next year, hopefully with sufficient funds to stay the whole weekend.  :-))

Ray.

Obviously never seen a ballroom.  That's the room next door which does have a sprung floor.  The Norcalympia was intended as an exhibition and event hall, and is a vast improvement from the point of view of access to both the Olympia and Tower.  Yes, the lighting could be improved - I haven't been in a hall where it couldn't be improved, but this year it was better because I noticed that I didn't have to take the walk to reception to get anything fixed.  Perhaps the owners have realised that craft exhibitions need visibility.
For photography, remember that the lights are fluorescent based, and have a slight greenish tinge.  When the piccies get into the PC, a gentle tweak on the colour balance sorts it.
In previous years, the hotel has had another event the same weekend (its a big place, they can) but this year there wasn't, so there was much less pressure on parking for those who cared to look.

Your right I haven't! please don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about the show, there are always problems with indoor photo's, using flash is not really a good idea for the reasons of disturbance and it spoils the colours of the models if you're not careful.

I have certain physical problems with getting around so I need to park as close as I can to anywhere I want to go or I can't access the buildings, steps and doors can cause trouble too, I couldn't arrive until 1pm so I had to wait for a space which I felt was not too far from the door, drove around a few times looking but not 1 space anywhere! eventually a car moved from near the 'out' gate so I was in! still not easy for me, hard to believe that I know but true. I appreciate I'm probably in the minority which can't always be catered for at shows like Blackpool, illuminations on and there was a gathering of some kind at the other end of the building.

Inside there's seats of course but I wanted to see the models and do some shopping, by this time I'm finding it hard and one chap noticed and tried to help, I wanted to stay for longer but less than an hour was enough for me.

I wish I could be more involved with the show as we need it and the traders are important as we all know there's not many shops around now, I really like to see what I'm buying and check out anything which I may want in the future, I had the chance to see nhp's Clyde...fantastic!.. in 45 minutes I managed to spend £90 so a worthwhile visit, I'm feeling the pain now though!

Sorry to go one so much but I needed to explain my views and experience.

Here's a few pic's I took at the 2005 show :-)

There are not that many good venues available on the Fylde coast. Blackpool Council will sting you for parking on their car parks (on street parking, forget it) and people would have a trek from car to exhibition.

There are a few school sports halls and council run sports halls but again, any rent would have to cover the loss of income from the hall's normal weekend income.

The only other venue I can think of around here is the Marine Hall at Fleetwood. Not sure what the standard is like there, I think Wyre Borough Council were talking about doing it up.

The first model boat shows I ever visited were at the Marine Hall, and a very nice venue it is.  It was suggested as an alternative to Norcalympia a few years ago, but I went there and paced the outside of the building.  It would fit inside the main hall part of Norcalympia.
One of the things that attracted us to the Norbreck was the ease os access for wheelchair users - vastly better than either the Tower or Olympia.
Few school sports halls are any bigger than EPlC, and that wasn't anything like big enough for a show the size of the Norbreck show, and schools tend to have less parking.
Apart from the Olympia and Tower, which carry access and parking problems, there are precious few suitable venues within 30 miles.

Yes I agree with you both, we have to make the best of what's available all things considered of course, at least I still made it and now have what I need to carry on with my corvette :-))
I use the net but there's nothing like some retail therapy! In couldn't manage any photo's this time sadly..got the cameras but only 2 hands and I needed those for the stick and shopping bag :D

I look forward to next year and hope I'm in better condition or find a easier method of moving around the venue wherever it is held.

A 2005 pic from the door...nice view anyway :-))

Trains arrive in Blackpool al the time! Government policy is to encourage the use of public transport as your first choice.

And if you happen to have started work on the railways back in BR days you will have free rail travel like me rather then having to pay the beeping prices the public get overcharged to go from A-B. Prices which are hardly an encouragement to get you off the roads <*<. Rant finished - Seriously though I have often had difficulty parking in Blackpool and for the slightest overstay they are quick to clamp and tow away. Also that road from the motorway has more flashing cameras than a Nikon factory.

Staying overnight next year.

Its Wednesday morning and we are just about recovered, Our thanks go to all the traders, clubs, private exhibitors and so on that make this a thumping great success, A special thank you to the helpers from Blackpool and Fleetwood and others who know who they are, without them it would be harder to do.

My thanks all go to you all for attending, and making it a realistic chance to go on again next year, Its at a time like this when all is pulled together does the hobby thrive at its best, we all need each other at an event such as this to keep the hobby well and truly alive...Even traders that sell similar products or same as each other do not quibble with their competitor, they simply get on and are happy that the event is there for all including there competitor, (don't get me wrong I am sure they wish there wasn't a competitor but we all bring something for each other)

As for venue well as I have said many times before we are 96% there with Blackpool and trying to fix the other 4% by looking somewhere may not achieve the goal, eg we can fix the 4 percent but something else may not be perfect...We constantly look at other venues for all sorts of things, and I have another venue up there to look at over coming weeks, but a balance has to be found. As an exampole we are about to launch a new show next year and we found brilliant venue but there was a refundable parking system eg you paid for 2 hours came inside and got it refunded but we then are warned of over zealous parking attendants and sure enough they were. Now at Blackpool we have free parking which is pretty difficult to get free parking in Blackpool. I suspect the winter gardens parking cost would be more than the show entry nowadays but its all the little things we try and get as near right as possible or we move. again gong back too the new show when we found out about the parking attendants we don't want the visitors clock watching every minute so we moved that show. Watch this space it will be announced on here this weekend and this time we do possible have the perfect venue...Well Buckingham Palace would be perfect as one poster once wrote on here but having checked with HRH she isn't away that weekend so we are scuppered there.

Anyway once again a big big big thank you to all

Meanwhile after all this weekend and being busy my little boy asked last night....Could we go and see the lights?  aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ps we still have a pair of glasses handed in ......Anyones ?????

Just like to say thanks Mark and everyone else who made the Blackpool show a success.I think some people should take stock of the amount of effort it must take to bring everyone together to make a show for us to enjoy.I personally think the present venue is more than adequate and does seem to improve each year.
As regards parking etc. forget it .A group of six of us now travel up on Friday afternoon, stay in a good B and B,enjoy fish and chips and a couple of pints.Rise Saturday to a good breakfast and call a cab which cost £5 between three of us and the same when we are ready to return to the digs.

That means you arrive fresh at the show, enjoy a full day in there and the luxury of no long drive home.

O.K it may cost a few quid but we have decided to have several smaller breaks such as this rather than spend a similar amount on one "big" holiday.

So as far as we are concerned, long live Blackpool show at NORCALYMPIA.

                                                                                                                           Cheers Andy
