Merchant Navy Day Australia wide,
3 Sep 2011
Share Print
The first ever Merchant Navy day, on the 3rd of September was in 2000, was a commemoration of the service of merchant seafarers in the first and second world wars - a service that was (for the most part) utterly unrecognised. >>:-(
All seafarers and their families are warmly invited and encouraged to join the Maritime Union in celebrating Merchant Navy Day. Please get in touch with your local branch or see details below.
South Australia:
Meet 11am outside the Port Information Centre, then proceed to the Navigator Memorial to honour those that sailed in the merchant navy.

To me the merchant seamen were definitely the unsung heroes of WWII. At some stages of the war they knew there was a very high
chance of them being torpedoed or bombed but they still did the job with virtually no protection. But the ship owners now there was a
right mean bunch of s---s. The moment the ship was sunk the crew were classed as "Discharged" and pay was stopped even though
some of them were in lifeboats trying to survive.
