Title: Stingray - small and fiddly version
Post by: andyn on September 06, 2011, 07:50:09 pm
I always loved Stingray and have been after one for ages, so now I've got two. The Matchbox one is absolutely tiny, only 13" long and with absolutely no usable space inside it to speak of whatsoever. The other model I'll be getting in the next couple of weeks doesn't suffer this problem, It's 3 feet long and like a cave, and I have several ideas for working bits on it.

After ripping it apart you can see how little room there is inside this one, I'm using 40mm pipe for a WTC, but can only get 13cm of it in there, and seeing as i need a good 80mm of it for servos the motor and batteries are gonna have to be out in the wet stuff...

I'm determined not to spoil the looks of the model outside, so all the linkages are gonna be as small as possible and out the way. Unfortunately the Ratemaster won't do anything but splash water around, so the inside is gonna have to be painted silver to hide a prop in there. Also, I was going to have the Sting missiles firing, but I need the space to put batteries in, so the big one will have to have them.

Here's where I am after a couple of hours work....

Andy :-)

That's this one Bob :-))

To be honest, little overpowered models are just as fun as the big ones, take our subsonic for example (no advertising here, promise ;) ) I've never had so much fun with a model. At Wicksteed I completely flattened and recharged nine batteries 3 times, a total of 13.5 hours... No wonder I don't get paid {-)

Been busy at it again, fitted the pushrod snake into the end caps and built a shaft and support (well it's so small you can hardly call it a shaft....), made up a very stubby coupling, the WTC plate is made and everything stuck on. To give you an idea of the size of this thing those servo's are 7.5 gram and the Rx is a Futaba Micro 3 channel....

To fit everything in, I've had to remove the case on the receiver and a load of heatshrink on the ESC.

Next up is drilling a load of holes in the front end cap for the ESC and battery connectors, then servo linkages. Then the end is in sight...

Andy :-)

Having inappropriate thoughts about one of these kits
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CC-LEE-Atomic-Submarine-STINGRAY-with-light-and-motor-driven-fun-kit-1-/190645536236

Think a couple of 3.7G micro servo brushless motor etc should be able to make a fun dynamic diver
Any thoughts?

Well I won one on ebay for $12... came to just over €20 with shipping  :embarrassed:   I'm sure someone bids for me while I am sleeping lol

Add 1 small brushless motor, 3 micro servos and away we go... maybe

Not to sure and I am no expert on Stingray models but advise you to check if you have bought the same model. The matchbox larger version I believe is the one being converted by Andy is 13 inches long whereas some model kits on Ebay I think you will find are 10 inches. So will be even more of a squeeze !

There isn't much you can't convert these days, with the small radio and batteries readily and cheaply available.

However these very small models are extremely fiddley to work with, and the novelty of having something very small soon wears off once you realise you can't see the thing 10 yards out!

I'd advise caution running the motor in the wet, it will corrode over time unless you're extremely methodical about drying it out after each session. Some people use WD40 sprayed in after a run, that's designed to get rid of moisture.

Probably all a long time gone but!!

Does anyone know the whereabouts of any plans or kits of Stingray that isn't a miniature but say 2 foot or so long  at a reasonable cost and convertable for radio control

It would give this oldtimer something to keep him busy this winter.

Many thanks in Advance

Plans are kicking about- basically a three view- you print them off then enlarge them to the size you want on a photocopier etc.

Regarding kits, it depends what you regard as reasonable I guess.

Many thanks

I appreciate that self build may be the only way. I mentioned reasonable cost as it would appear  a Comet or Japanese kit although not as large as I'd like have become collectables and very pricey for what they are.

There is a kit available in the UK, which is 32" long. That's an ideal size IMO, being big enough for a bit of presence on the pond, but not so big as to be difficult to transport

Very nice kit, extremely accurate, and the price is £330.

Once again and many thanks.

I note that Studio2 models  now say they are making the kit suitable for radio control  I have just emailed then to confirm this and on their reply will take it from there.

Well if you take a mosey over to the sub drivers forum, you will see a build thread of that boat. The builder worked a trade with Dave Merriman, Dave got a kit, and in return is making WTC for it. As there are a few special requirments for this model, I dare say it will be available for interested parties in due course, but it's still in the development phase as I type this.

Science fiction and fantasy boats do present a special challenge to the modeller when trying to make them work.

Well the CC lee model has arrived and its quite cramped inside.  I think its still a viable option but my inital plans simply will not fit.  I need to find some even smaller servos.... im thinking about linear servos like those used in the smaller RC helis, but not sure if they have enough power.
When I have something more concrete to report I'll start a new thread if anyone is interested

The linear servos will be strong enough provided you make a low friction seal outside. Hobbyking sell some nice linear servos, and they're cheap. Worth having a look at how Dave Merriman used them on the 1.5" subdriver he produces.
