Title: rescue tugs from 2nd WW
Post by: dondecap on September 12, 2011, 09:04:51 am
hi guys,
I am looking at building HMS Stormking, origionaly Stormcock but renamed at commission.
a tug which was around for ships in trouble in the channel and D DAY etc during the 2nd world war, later sold a few times and ended up in Genoa, Italy and renamed Toro.
has any one done one of this breed?  the    Assurance class.
Laid down   30 Jul 1942,    Launched   24 Nov 1942,    Commissioned   29 Mar 1943
it will be electric power not the original steam.

MSW do the Assurance in 1\43 scale. Stormking had pennant number W87 according to the site.

Ship doesnt look anything like the one in the pic in your later post though!

hi justboatonic
that was done in 2008/9 BY William D. Cody ....USA It does not look like a good representation of the boat does it, it was about all I could find in the 'model' line , nice model though.looks more modern styling.
the original info came from from the ones on uboat.net
I have found a pic from member  'oldiron' showing the 'tow hook' of the model storm king.
here  http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=15499.0
but no article about the model.

hi guys,
well I have traced pics of her up to 1958 when she became 'Melanie Fair'
and no superstructure changes have been made she was later sold to italy company and renamed 'toro' but I can find no referance to her under that name .
BUT there was a Toro bult in 1966 that had a modern superstructure like the steam version ..similar hull/deck lines but fatter funnel .. I wonder if there is a mix of the new one and the 1942 one in the steam version. looks very similar to the steam version model..

hi all.
just spotted a mistake in the above post.
it should read the later toro has 'similar' hull/deck lines.... the top bow line actually is longer on the modern ship.

Hmmmm. If that is the 'original' stormking, she's had some radical work done on her topside. Im not too convinced its the same tug although it is possible it was heavily modified.

hi mate.
no that was a new build.. the original was scraped in italy
but both come up on search....I was just thinking that the 'USA steamer build' looked like a mix of the two ;)

hi guys.
well I have sorted a hull plan.
the ones on 'ebay ' come out at
LENGTH 39”
BEAM 8 1/2”
scale 1/4in :1ft

on laying mine out they come out at
LENGTH 48"
BEAM mean 10"
Ooooppppps
so mine must be a fraction over 1/4in :1ft
bit more timber and glass then............. {-)
and it will be this one

Hi dondecap   Here are a couple of pictures of a 1/32nd scale model of the Assiduous that I made a few years ago in 2003 she was fitted with a Cheddar Proteus steam plant which could be removed and an electric motor put in instead for sailing where steam was not allowed she was scratch built plank on frame .
after being sold on she is still around somehere in Kent I think.  A T B  Geo.

hi tugmad,
thanks a bunch mate,
these are good pics of a smart model :)
proper build eh, with a steam plant..........out of my range I am afraid, so it will be good old electric.
hopefully I will be starting this in a week or so .....just got to rummage for the materials ;)
I know they are there some where  %)
1/32 scale ...what length was she at that scale?

As soon as I fathom out my scanner, I have two old prints of the Saucy and the Assiduous in what I believe black and buff one of them when it was in the fleet target towing setup, which I will upload.

Hi Don  as far as I can remember she was about50 inches long and I think that it was 5/16ths to the foot ,it was 9 years ago and time plays tricks as you get older. :embarrassed:

hi tugmad .
well the plans I came across and managed to enlarge to actual scale came out at 48ins long which is about the scale yours was then, but they are not too clear.
I also have a set coming at 1/4in :1ft which comes out at 39ins long.
so I may just do the smaller one......depends if the plans are complete.
your looks a superb model..... I like steam but it is way out of my price range :)
 many thanks for the picture.
between them all I have quite a good guide now for surface work/detail.

I expect you know, but in case you do not, Stormking waswas renamed Tryphon in 1947. In October 1958 she was sold for commercial use in HMDkyd Sheerness and was renamed Melanie Fair.

hi mate.
yes she 'got around' a bit eh?
it was after the renaming to Melanie Fair. that she dissapeard off the radar :)
there seems to nothing out there about Melanie Fair. or when she was eventualy scraped.

ps got the full?? info now :)

Miramar database have only one MELANIE FAIR a Tug built 1943 by Cochrane.Selby.Launched as STORMCOCK. ex STORMKING. ex TRYPHON.ex MELANIE FAIR.ex TORO. scrapped Italy 1969.

so eventualy scraped in 1969.

Not a bad length of service for a emergency wartime built tug, probaly had a planned life expectancy of 18 months to 2 years, the old St Margarets was 18months but went onto 40 odd years.

Hi finally bought a new printer/scanner, problem was my old printer was I could not update the drivers to win 7 for the scanner. The Saucy is as she was when she was civilian manned under RFA conditions in black and buff colours and the Assidious after she was laid up for scrap after service under C.D. Gibraltar for fleet target towing again painted in Black and Buff with white or grey funnel band and lining. The Adherent is I believe the Diligent renamed Adherent in 1947 in 1047 when she relieved the Paddler Cracker at Sheerness, again painted here in Black and Buff, but she would have had C.D. Chatham colours of azure blue funnel band and blue lining around Bulwarks.

It was later named Tryphon and worked out of Canada, Montreal I think.

Yes there is some options to consider here as the class as the whole must have been more useful than the Envoy class, as so many where taken over and used by various MoD depts for a wide variety of tasks after the war. There used to be several dept's within the MoD all civilian crews which had numbers or abbreviations for titles such as the D606 (who operated the salvage and mooring craft) another group under RFA pay and conditions I forget their title but their last vessels were the Roysterer and Rollicker which came into RMAS control. Some of these departments had no DTI qualifications required such as the D606 and CED tugs, others like the RNAD required DTI Home trade tickets with the Cable ships service requiring minimum of Foreign going Masters tickets as minimum, the qualification requirements depending if the vessel had a port of registry, as most like CED and D606 where not registered and the MoD was not subject to DTI regs and requirements.

On the jar of Floquil paint I used, its called Armour Yellow. I don't know what else you'd call it , except dull yellow.

I know this is an old thread, but anyone interested in the Assurance/Envoy class of tugs would really enjoy a movie entitled "The Key" with Sophia Loren, William Holden, and Trevor Howard. Shows the tugs underway and a lot of good footage of details.  :-))
