Title: Help with Identification of this tug.. Please.
Post by: NickKK on October 01, 2011, 11:31:07 am
Hi guys

The first is more of a question... Any one know if the Bon Church is still on the Sankey canal at Penketh?

I acquired this tug half built and incomplete and need to find a few pictures and history of the real boat type. I have been told that the name is going to be the Tenacious and that it was one of the tugs owned and operated by the London Towage Company Ltd ... I bears their flag/ emblem on the funnel. I have looked at some of the tug websites and can not find a tug that looks similar to the model ... close at times but not that good .... Pictures of the model are below:-

I guess identification would be easier if the bridge was on the right way round O0

According to the markings on the bridge wing floor the wheel house is on the right way around. I tried it the other way around ... That way there is no way up on to the bridge from the funnel deck .... the steps don't fit ... So I guess the picture is right after all ...

Looks like the name on the bow was "JANEWAY" til it was partially sanded off.

it was once called the Janeway ... the person I bought it from was rebuilding the deck up as a new model to be called the Tenacious. He only completed what you can see in the photographs before he passed away. I'd like to complete the work he started as near to what the boat should look like as possible and that is why I'm asking for help with any information on this tug ...

hi nick Ive only ever built 2 tugs  but have studied the London tugs that you think it poss could be, my opinion is,,, turn the bridge around the opp way, (as unbuiltnautilus says)   resite the mast to the front of the bridge,  make another mast for the rear of funnel, fit it forward of the towing hook, and it then would look more like a sun tug,  Ive drew it on paper differant ways and thats the best profile i can come up with,,, any other members have any comments on that, or another way ? ? ?  regards brian_c {:-{

Hi mate she has the London ship towage funnel colours, but I do not recognise her as of any, including the minor river tugs owned by this group. Bust she does remind me of the type built pre-ww2 at Dartmouth, there is a good book out on the vessels built at I believe they where called phillips, but it is a very nice and interesting model, very much worth researching more about. Was there a port of registry on the stern, painted over or such.

Thanks for your replies guys and the help you have offered ... I found a vessel that looks very much like this model. I too have spent hours looking through images of Wattkins tugs and London Towage Co. Ltd. I couldn't see anything like it ...

I will perhaps build it as it is. As far as I can and then copy some examples of mast assemblies and deriks .. I'm going to wait until Blackpool to buy the life boats.

Whaterver I decide to do There will be lots more pictures of the stages through wich I'm going to take this model .... Hopefully I'll do the original builder full justice to his original plans for it ...

Now does any one know of the Bon Church ? ...

Thanks guys for wracking your brains and the time to reply

Hi the smaller tug is the one of those built in the 30's at Dartmouth, you can see the similarity. In this case it is the Grapeshot, built originally for the RNAD, in the davits she had transom clincher dingies originally.

I cannot put my finger on it, but the name janeway rings a bell, an she does resemble some of the East coast (uk)small  harbour tugs. Of which there were numerous some not recorded.
