Hello all , a little while ago I asked a few questions about repowering my Star Perseus diving support vessel with ROBBE power 1000 motors, got a lot of great replies regarding brushed motors but a few people reccommended going brushless.
After much consideration and a few PMs to nick 75 au (thanks for your time nick) I have now installed 2 Himark 510kv brushless motors running off 2 HAWK 60 amp speedies.
I have heard a lot of arguments for and against brushless motors in large scale boats but I have to say that I could not be happier, I am yet to have a good sail in open waters but after running in my test tank I am very pleased with the low end speed controll.
Anyway here are some pictures of the refit.
Pictured below are the old car fan type motors.
-
Here is the mount I made to cover the old holes, and a new motor next to a johnson 785 just for size comparison.
-
Im a bit paranoid about overheating speedies so I made this little box and mounted a computer fan under it, overkill on a 60amp esc I know but ive seen a lot of burnt speedies ( besides that I think it looks funky )
-
Had a great sail today, new motors are great, 3 hours on a 24amp gel cell
-
Just as powerful and easy to steer in reverse (notice wake at the front !)

hi mermod , thinking of remotoring one of my tugs. what are dimentions of star perseus and what size props are you
useing

very nice lookin model and nice motors :)

Hi pima , my star persus is 1.6m long and the props are 65mm rivabo, I stated above that the run time was 3 hours but watching the video after realised I actually got four hours , and atleast half of that was flat out and way over scale speed so sailed carefully I should get quite a run.

Excellent mate, looks fantastic on the water, glad to be of service :D
I haven't heard of the hawk ESC's before , must look them up.
Cheers

Hi nick, hawk speedies are imported by Model Engines Australia and available from most hobby shops, I used to sell them in my shop and never had any problems, I considered buying from hobbking etc but the fear of warranty issues made me stay with aussie suppliers, also the programming card for the hawk speedies is extremely easy to use.

Excellent timing as I am thinking of building one of these (I have the plans).
A quick question ... is the toothed gear and belt in your pics to make the crane rotate?
All in all, a good looking model.
Cheers
-
Hi oldflyer, yes the gear and belt is to make the crane rotate, I have an older futaba 9cap with rotary dials which is perfect for a crane, I also have a small compressor and ram for elevation, I have used a small but very powerful winch designed for rc rockcrawlers for the hook.
I also have molds for most of the fittings aswell as lasercut watertight doors so if you need any just pm me.
I wish you luck building yours I have thoroughly enjoyed building mine and it sails like a dream.

Hello
I'm very interrested with brushless motor and until now I was thinking about Speed 900 torque for my next tug with 75mm screw via Z-drive 1/3 reduction gear. Then I'm like on the middle of the bridge, should I pass on the other side with brushless or I stay in the old system ? Wait and see !! I'm looking to evry project like yours. What size of srews on your Star Perseus ?

Hello Xtian, the props are rivabo 65mm 5 blades, I too was unsure about brushless versus the old school brushed motor but now Ive made the plunge I couldn't be happier and will definitely be converting all my other models , by the way the Abeille liberty I'm building (from the plans you acquired for me) will be brushless also.
must talk to you about that photo CD sometime as i will be needing it very very soon.
-
Oups sorry I forget to send the CD, this one is ready somewhere in my mess !! :embarrassed:
65mm is not far to my 75mm (and I have 1/3 reduction gear) maybe exactly the same motor and esc as you could be ok ok2

Hi Xtian,
You would need to modify the setup by either increasing the voltage by a factor of 2.5-3 OR the KV of the motors otherwise the speed will be too slow, with the 3:1 reduction a smaller 36 mm (3642 for example) at 1200-1500 Kv would be appropriate, or upping the voltage to 24-36 volts with the same motor IIRC mermod is using 12 volts.
Cheers

Thanks Mermod for the info. I have one of those rock crawler winches here as well so I may be able to put it to use.
Cheers.
