Fantastic for a hovercraft. :embarrassed:
-
... or a buggy
I think it's so that they can shovel up the several tonnes of swan poo that accumulate in the lake. ;-)
-
that looks like a good sized boating lake or is it a photographic illusion.
-
What is the parking like at this lake? Nearby or a fair hike?
would be a good place for a 'meet' nes pas?
Carl
-
Yes it's a lovely lake. Here is a picture when I went to sail my Springer once.
Perhaps Spook could give us the low down on availability and parking as I was only a guest . I believe it has a strong membership as well.
cheers

It's a very nice lake, about 1 metre deep, large enough for fast electrics as well (i/c not allowed), but you need to be careful not to hit the swans/geese/ducks/gulls.
As for parking, insured BMBC club members have access to park at the lakeside, right by the water. There is out-of-season (October to April?) parking on the adjacent road but during the summer months it is patrolled by the odd traffic warden.
The link below is to Google maps - The nearest public car parks are 1) on the Knap car terrace (left side of the map), about 200 yards from the lake and 2) behind the post office (top of the map), about 250 yards from the opposite end of the lake to that which we usually use for sailing so, as long as your boat's not too heavy or have a trolley it's not too much of a drag.

We at Tynemouth had a few horrible years of that stuff. Thick enough to play cricket on. Now there's some sort of electronic gizmo that does something I know nowt about, but it certainly seems to stop such stuff growing. BY.
-
Bryan......the pool is empty mate....... {-) {-)
-
Looks as if the Knap lake is full of the wet stuff again. I haven't yet been lakeside to see how deep it is, but it is looking good.
-
Hi all.
Sailed there on Thursday last.
Water nice and clean, about 10"-12" lower than woodwork. :-))
A lttle lower than ideal but OK if you dont want to make any adjustments when on the water. {:-{
-
Meant to post this with previous reply :embarrassed:
Is this any help?

it is rather low isn't it? It's normally up near the woodwork. Maybe it's still filling, as the 'feeder' is a spring which doesn't have a very strong flow.

My club lake 3 Rivers RYA http://www.3rryc.org.uk/ is 3 feet below it's normal level we can just about launch our 1 metre yachts off the jetty this has been due to very low rainfall this year and the water table also getting lower to be honest if we don't get some rain down south soon it's not looking good for next year.
That boating lake looks perfect for IOM racing and other classes who runs the club there.
-
You can have some of our rain if you come and collect {-)
We've had the lake water close to, or even over, the tops of the jetties right through the summer.
I was having to step UP into my dad's sailing boat on Coniston rather than the usual down.....most disconcerting.
-
We'll happily have some of your water in Westport Lake, Stoke if you can mail it. We've been about a foot below normal level all year! Launching heavier boats has been awkward to say the least! Dave. O0

curiosity has got the better of me so i have to ask.......why was it drained.....to clean it or another reason
-
It's drained every few years to clean it. The lake attracts quite a healthy population of water birds, i.e. swans, geese ducks and gulls. whose toilet habits are less than ideal. Consequently there is quite a build up of bird poo and algae over time, so the council drain it and clean it.
If you look at the map link I posted earlier you can see how gungey the lake gets. Also if you go into street view on the map you will get an idea of the number of birds it attracts.
-
i see what you mean. is that a mat of algae.
-
See reply Number 9.... {-)
It would make a great car racing venue... :-))
-
Spook - me and the 'old fella' are seriously thinking of joining this Club (he lives near Chepstow)............can you point me in the direction of some details please?
Also - is the lakeside accessible for motorhomes - i.e. the access gate width isnt too restrictive?
Some of our boats are so large that they dont fit in a car!!!!
Cheers
Carl
-
Carl,
I sent an email to info@barrymodelboatclub.co.uk, as per the club website www.barrymodelboatclub.co.uk (http://www.barrymodelboatclub.co.uk) , when I joined and got a fairly prompt response. So I'd suggest you do that. If you have no joy there, I have the chairman's email address.
The entrance to the lakeside is wide enough for the council lorries to get through so it might be OK for a motorhome. There are two lockable pillars which need to be lowered for access. I can get my 4x4 through by just lowering one, so you should be OK.
Hope to see you at the lake!
Cheers,
Spook
