Title: falmouth oyster boat
Post by: n33h on October 22, 2011, 02:22:13 pm
hello everyone, as the title says, i'm building an oyster dredger, still a few things to be done to get her on the water but she's about 95% complete, my idea of building her was to have a show piece (as authentic as i can get her) but also to sail her                                                                                                           i have no clue what sort of things would be on deck, i have looked at photo's but no real help so if anyone has idea's, photo's or link's would be very much grateful                                                                           regards nick

Hiya, Ive been oop north for a couple of weeks, amongst other things visiting the fabulous Blackpool Show, and meeting people I have been e mailing over the years, but never met in the flesh. However,I an based near Falmouth,so after I have seen the photos you are going to post,I will try to get over to take some photos of some of them for you.Be warned though, that few of them are now working boats and will already have been lifted out of the water for the winter,so will be covered up,and also will have had their masts removed. The most famous of all is the "Victory" which is over 110 years old,and was owned by the late Arthur "Toby" West, one of the best sailors around, and one of the best known Soxn of the Falmouth lifeboats, until his retirement. I will do what I can for you.
Cheers,
Mick

Hi

Having had the great pleasure of racing on a Falmouth Working boat during Falmouth regatta week there is only the gear that is needed for controlling the sails on the deck.

The rig that is used for racing is a lot bigger than the one used for dredging so you need to decide if it is to be in racing trim or working trim.

thankyou for all your replys guys, the boat will be in dredge trim so a large gaff sail and 2 smaller jib and foresail, i have made a few modifications for ease of rigging/de-rigging but no major detour from the real thing, some photos of the real thing would be greatly appreciated, regards nick

Found a bit more for you.

I have a copy of 'planaship - Falmouth Working Boat'. (They don't seem to be around now.)

On it is shown sail plan, elevation, plan and lines. there is also a drawing of the oyster dredge see below.

hello again guys, this topic has certainly gained some interest, hopefully you can see the pictures now triumph, i'm getting the bits together to start on the dredge but i'm unsure how big to make it, i'm thinking maybe about the same width as the transom, i now have the gunnels cut out, i will be painting them red or black to go with the cockpit, just waiting on lead ballast now then i can glue the deck down and start to finish her                                                                     i swapped an old trawler hull for this hull with the club chairman (waverley models here in clevedon) plus the sails, i got a cracking deal, all other parts have cost me about £20

thanks for sharing triumph, a beautiful looking boat indeed, i love the plank on frame work (have'nt had a go myself) my hull's fibreglass
Title: Re: falmouth oyster boat
Post by: triumphjon on October 24, 2011, 09:23:22 pm
its not plank on frame , its bread and butter construction that has been hollowed out inside . not  of my doing as i bought the hull / deck from somebody in selsea . im only responsible for the two deck hatches , a replacement rudder ,  the new mast and sails  and of course installing radio control  ! im told the hull was probably made sometime in the 1920s or 1930s . at present ive not fitted any period fishing equipment to my model .                              with regard to your own dredge gear i shall be repairing some links on a modern dredge in the morning and will try to get some measurements for you , the oyster season starts on the 1st of november , jon

an update for everyone, i have some fittings for the scuppers coming and also a couple of crew figures, brass madt base ring is installed along with the rudder arm/tiller, will post some more photo's, she needs about 15lb of ballast to get on the waterline, once ballast is in, get deck glued down then the gunnels and hand rails

Try the local tyre dealers- they have scrap lead balance weights off wheels.

Post by: triumphjon on October 30, 2011, 08:31:39 pm
there is qa problem using old wheel weights , its no longer just lead , its an alloy of something else . which dosnt cut very well and is hard to melt too  ( ive been picking it up on street corners for months ! ) the lead flashing is a better bet , i dont know if newavon arms are still trading , they used to be in st johns lane bedminister ( near the old malago gas works ) as they would be able to supply cartridge shot . jon

hi jon, i remember that place, ithink they've been shut for a while now as bedminster is always being re-developed, ballast is being on its way, i have purchased some dive weights (2kg lead shot pouches) these can be pulled in and out for storage and transport, i bought 3 pouches at a cost of £41 total from Ebay, nick
