Title: New kid on the block, with some questions
Post by: Robert F. on November 27, 2011, 12:34:10 pm
Hello all,

first, as a newcomer to this forum, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Rob (or Robert if you'd prefer that), I am 54 years old and Dutch.
I have lived in Rotterdam all my life until three years ago, when I moved to the Eastern part of the country. Most inhabitants of Rotterdam take a keen interest in anything connected with ships, and I am no exception. I have  been shipmodelling for a large number of years, mainly surface warships. With the (then) largest port in the world nearby, I have had many opportunities to see and visit the real things!

Submarines have always had a special attraction for me. I tried to make an RC model many years ago, but my technical skills simply weren't up to it. It didn't help that the RC equipment wasn't as advanced in those days as they are now.

But with all the kits, electronics, and other equipment available to the modeller today, it's a different story, even if my technical skills haven't improved very much over the years. Up to now, I have built a Blueback class sub (a Small World Models kit) and a Trumpeter 1/144 Seawolf sub , RC'd with a French WTC kit.

And recently, I have bought and started work on a OTW Vanguard with an OTW dive module. Both excellent value for money IMHO. I have already seen some threads on this forum about this kit and I am looking for any photographs and drawings of this class of sub, so any help with this would be most appreciated!

And now for the question(s): does anyone know if and where I can find accurate drawings of Thunderbrird 4 and Stingray?  I loved to watch these shows when I was a small boy and I certainly want to try and make an RC'd model of those subs.

Best regards,

Rob

I dont know of accurate drawings, however, I have top and side photographs ( I think..) in a Japanese book called SF Mecha Graffiti. I can copy those off and post them here. On the subject of Stingray, there were different size models for different shots, and they are all subtly different in shape and colouring layout. Therefore, you are permitted a little latitude on that one!

Hi Rob
You e-mailed me for photo's of the rudder Nav light - this is all I have and these are from one of the build threads on here or off the net. If you do an image search there are loads of good photo's of the Vanguard class on there!

Last photo is courtesy of the Vanguard build thread by Turbulent and was posted by DavieTait, along with a batch of other good photo's and info. Essential reading for building one of these.

I originally sourced the photo of the stern lamp/rudder and put them up on Sub Pirates some time ago. Clearly there are some parts of the boat, namely the propulsor, which are highly classified so you're unlikely to see any images of that published for the foreseeable future.

The material I received was not sensitive, but useful none the less. I posted what I had up on Sub Pirates some time ago, and Davie reposted them here.

Unfortunately the Vanguard is one of the harder boats to source reference on. Jecobin do some excellent drawings of the boat and there are now quite a few nice pictures for reference, certainly more than enough to make a very presentable scale model. You're off to a flying start with the OTW kit.
