Welcome Tan
There is lots of stuff here on Mayhem you could always take a look at the BMPRS web site as well. There may even be a boat on there for sale.

You might also want to check your local boating lakes rules, as not all allow ic engine powered boats due to wildlife issues that result from exhaust fumes and leaks/spills.

You can get a really good second hand one for a lot less than £800, email us at www.bmprs.co.uk via the Contacts page (as suggested by Bill above) and we will do our best to sort something out for you, try ebay but you really need to see what you are getting for your money first.

BMPRS are racing at King Lear lake Leicester on March 21st and September 23rd next year.....not very far for you to travel  :-))

Check out our monthly column in Model Boats magazine  :-))

Hi Tanveer
The Leicester Model Boat club which meets at Abbey Park does not allow IC boats but there is an excellent club at Watermead Park just North of the city.
It's called the King Lear Model Boat Club - http://www.kinglearmodelboatclub.co.uk/ (http://www.kinglearmodelboatclub.co.uk/) - and they not only allow ALL types of boats, but also host 2 Championship races for the BMPRS - http://www.bmprs.co.uk (http://www.bmprs.co.uk) one in March and the other in September.
They are a very friendly bunch and have many years experience of IC power boats.  I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you with your choice of hull.
Another good idea would be to look at the BMPRS Championship results for last season, to see which hulls/engines have done best.  Its obviously not as simple as just choosing the right gear - you have to be able to drive it!  At least with having experience with cars, you will have a head start.
Have fun

watermead park is just up the road from me 5 minute drive, do they meet up there often just to run the boats etc? or is it just there to race? what i am thinking of doing now is for my budget of 800 pounds get a miss geico or something for when i feel like having a quick blast and have the petrol model as a display in my living room and take it out in the summer,

Hi Tan
My Prestwich Lynx was my second petrol boat, first being a cheaper Ready to Run boat. The trouble with my first RTR boat was that it had inferior hardware compared to the Lynx and was only half as fast. Having gone through a steep learning curve with Petrol Power I will always in future (as with my Lynx) buy new and build from scratch. I get as much pleasure from building as I do running them.
If you are looking at the options from Prestwich Models, his Miami 55 (similar price to the Lynx) is a good first boat. It is easier to build being bigger with more room and access inside and more forgiving to trim out properly. With either boat I would recommend (within your budget) the deal option with the stock 260PUM engine. Unlike many RTR deals, Dave’s boats come with top quality hardware.
In terms of difficulty, I would suggest they are well within the scope of folks with good model building skills and some decent mechanical know how.
As others suggested, meeting club members running these boats is a good start.
Cheers
Craig

Hi Tan
Just in case you are wondering about the Lynx or the Miami 55 from Prestwich model centre:
These two short clips show firstly two Lynxes head to head at our Bridlington club (mine doing the chasing). And secondly on the same water my brothers Miami 55 in action. All three boats were purchased with the deal option and with stock 260PUM engines. The Miami is impressive on the water and handles rough water easily.

Hi Tan
In respect of the Lynx, this short clip demonstrates what happens before it is properly trimmed out...(now all sorted of course)....It is of my twin brother’s boat his first run and this clip makes me laugh every time I see it. I think he did well not to tip it over!

i think im going to either go with the lynx or the miami 55 now, do prestwich models offer the miami 55 with the hardware engine ready installed?

Hi Tan

I am not aware that you can buy these with the Engine installed. Personally I would recommend always doing your own installation. That way you know the boat inside out and in the long term I think it is way more beneficial.

Hey, as much as I am a big fan of the products from Prestwich Model Boats, I would sleep on it and perhaps get so see some boats in action before you make your final decision.

Cheers

Hi Tan, Like Craig say's....sleep on it before you choose a hull, get yourself down to a race meeting or two, make a pest of yourself by asking a lot of questions....... then choose  :-))
Most racers are very approachable and keen to share info/advice/etc etc O0
Quite a few of us at BMPRS use Apache, Navaho and the new Arrow hulls from Waverider Mouldings up in Blackpool, contact mayhem  member martno1fan  :-)) for the latest details of his range of hulls. Like Danny say's check out the 2011 championship winning boats on the BMPRS website.
By the way Danny who you calling fast ???????  %) :o {-) {-) {-)

Hi Scoop
It is about 30 years since I competitively last raced a model IC boat at my local club and at limited national level. And at that time I won a lot of trophies, race after race.
Winding the clock forward 30 years I am now back into the scene with Petrol/Gas boats.

On a personal level the only time I will enter another race is when I have a boat that is in my opinion sufficiently fast/stable  enough to beat the competition.
Perhaps more crucial for me is to gain back the huge confidence that I previously had in driving a very fast boat. Continued practice should determine that aspect for me in a non race situation.

For the time being I will focus upon my building and driving skills. If I reach my personal targets then I will want to race again in a competitive situation.
The issue I face is that once I get into potential racing/competition mode or mind set, the whole thing gets so personally serious for me such that the raw enjoyment gets lost among the stress of wanting to win!

Does that make any sense to you folks?
Cheers
Craig
