Title: Impressives pics of a cargo on the beach
Post by: Xtian29 on December 20, 2011, 03:05:43 pm
Hello

A cargo on the beach in Brittany, not so far from my home.  This Malta cargo with Turkish crew came out of Lorient harbour even if a strong wind storm was already there.

The reason why she left the harbour is to save harbour fee then the captain well knew that the wheather was too hard for his ship and just ouside the harbour he make tries for shelter anchoring close to an island but fail.

The result is this ship in wide natural land.  A lot of oil in the sea on the sand and this ship will need to be scrapped in-situ destroying the fauna and flora with trucks and so on ...

Just avoiding to pay harbour fee and staying in secure place !

Merci, Xtian for posting that. Great pictures. And respect to the pilots and winch men who endanger their lives because of the Captain's reckless actions. I hope the owners are grateful to him for saving the company money. What's the French for "daft Booger"?

Yes, I had heard about this, not a good place to go ashore at all. We had a short holiday break at Erdevan/Etel earlier this year and know the area very well. In some ways the ship was lucky, a little further on and she might have gone aground on the Cote Sauvage of Quiberon which is very rocky compared with the beach where she ended up.

By the way she hit rock prior to the beach and the cargo structure is cut and bended (fuel leak)

Very interesting pictures Xitian, Thanks. Will there be any more pictures of her removal?
What was her cargo?

She was empty, one reason why the captain was not so happy to go high sea and want to stay at anchor close to Groix Island. The decision to leave the harbour was certainely from the owner somewhere along his swimming pool in a fiscal paradise island.  Then as she was empty, not easy to stay anchored with strong wind.

Yes I will update the subject in the future. Actually they are speaking to remove the hull prior Easter as this place is a bird reserve and crowded with nest at the end of springtime. Work and truck must have finish for that time . They hope for that.

Well if your country works like our country, then the ship will sit till it is good and stuck.
The first salvage effort will fail, and more bunkerage will begin to leak.
Local authorities will decide that to prevent more leakage they will burn it off.
So they set the ship on fire.
The fire will not go off, so more flammable ignition materials will be used.
The fire will then over burn and weaken the ship, but not burn all the bunkerage, which will continue to leak.
A second salvage effort will succesfully pull the ship from the beach, but the tow rope will break, and the ship will
return to the beach on the tide, and re-imbed itself in the beach.
The third salvage effort will succeed only in pulling the now severely weaked ship in half, spilling the rest of the bilge and bunkerage.
The bow section will eventually be towed out to sea, blown up, shot at with a destroyer, then torpedoed by a submarine, linger and then sink.
The stern will sit for another seven years till the tourists become bored, then removed at state expense or until legal claims are settled.

What a shame, it looks like a rather nice ship of an older vintage.  Bows aren't blunt and the stern isn't some squared off lump, and you don't see cargo booms like that anymore.

A similar thing happened in November in Cape Breton and the combined response of government and industry has been rather... lacklustre.   %)  At least no fuel was spilled in that case.

Hi Xitian

Thanks again

I was just thinking that this would make an interesting subject for a dioarama. Those cutting machines are really great.
Any badly damaged model freighter would suffice - I have got too much planned just now but I like the idea.
