More photos.
Having looked at the boat in more detail it appears that who ever built this boat in the 60's knew a thing about her, the detail of the mast plus the anchor, yet al photos show her in grey
yet this is in black and she is named " black Javelin".
Was the a RTTL 2753 boat named the "Black Javelin"?

I think the name would be the model builder's idea, none of the boat's had a name just a number, 2753 was re-named 'Flywood'.

Your boat does look well built...lots of work to restore it though, I'm sure the original plan is still available which would help, I have some photo's of model RTTL's similar to your's stored on disc, I'll post some later, here's one of a Med boat, useful for the details...I'll have to build mine someday :embarrassed:

Before thinking about planking - are you going to strip all the old paint off and start from bare wood?
You probably won't know what the paint is or how it will react with the new paint you choose.
There is a Huntsman going through the same process that is now having cracking due to reactions
between paints. Fairy Power Spray £3.15 in Tesco's will do most of the stripping for you, and you won't
have the sorrow of spraying new paint on and seeing it crack later on. Your choice anyway Olly ;)

Yes,going to strip back to bare wood .
I know what you mean about different paints reacting.
Just restoring an old Aerokits Commander and had to strip back to wood.
The decking on RTTL was plywood and the lines were scribed with a knife.
Just wondering what planks to order with other bits and pieces.

Hi there the above link may be of some help.   The model was built using a modified version of the plans from my hobbies store and a few other bits of information and plans.

I notieced, in a couple of photographs, there is a boat with an 'E' at the end and this denotes that it was one of the two special boats built by Vosper with an aluminium and fibre glass hull.   As far as the paint scheme is concerned, normally they had either a black hull with a grey superstructure or if they were in the Med - an off white hull and superstructure.

The decks - some of them were painted and some were left - wood varnished.

Hi

I've not seen those photos before so thanks. Re the paint I have been told if I use Halfords primer then it's a
Halfords topcoat, same goes with the B&Q range. So if you don't mix brands there is little chance of any poor
reactions coming through. Keep posting any progress. :-))

hi there

if you are looking for fittings, MacsMouldings does them - they do the ventilators and deck hatches in 1:24 scale for this model  -

Looking at the pics you have put on, the hull looks in good nick - to seal some of my hulls in the past I have used plasticoat primer bought from Halfords or B & Q.

Also as a thought, you could , if you wish too use a thin coating of finishing Z epoxy applied with a bit of old credit/bank card.

Just started to work on superstructure in liteply, but I am having problemswith the base warping.
Any suggestions?

Just like the hull has Bulkheads to hold the shape, you need to make formers and stiffening ribs on the inside of the flat surfaces. Even 1/8" (3mm) square Balsa shold be OK on this size to stiffen up Lite-ply.

Resined inside hull and painted.
Started on superstructure with base from liteply, decided to stop
and wait for birch ply to arrive.
Not happy with liteply, keeps warpping.

Very nice deck.  :-)) :-))  I've got a Model Slipways RTTL kit and was contemplating doing a wooden deck. Have seen enough photos, some earlier in this thread, to know they were common enough. I've even bought a good stock of planking from CMB.

Do you have other photos of your deck? I'd be keen to know how you did yours.

I'm interested to know if there was a strip around the outside that conforms to the shape of the deck or are all the planks placed fore/aft.

Kind wish,
Bruce

Deck planks are 0.5mm maple.
These were placed in some gravy browning to stain them.
When dry used a 9b pencil on the edges to simulate the chalking.
Glue with titon wood glue,  when dry used a Stanley blade to with the grain to flatten the decking,  this also cleaned the glue that I split on the decking.
Decking goes forward to after.
Protection is with a car lacquer.
I will post more photos tomorrow night.

Looks very nice.  :-)) :-))

From the photo it looks like the fore/aft planking finishes a few mm before the end of the deck and there is a 'flat' piece that follows the curve of the hull around the outside of the deck. Can you explain what you did there?

Cheers
Bruce

Hi Antipodes
I used maple sheet for all of the decking. The piece you see which goes all round the deck is a 12mm piece of maple.
I put the sheet on the table and put the boat up side down on this then drew around it to get the curve after this had dried and stained I put a maple plank over the top of this so I could get a understanding of where to cut the fore and aft decking planks in order to get a tight joint.
All decking before laid was stained using gravy browing.
I will post a better picture of this later.

Understand now  8) - I hadn't thought of doing that. Thanks!

A lot of builders here use tea to stain decks - that way we don't get dogs jumping in the pond sniffing gravy!!  ok2 ok2

I've got maple planks from CMB for my deck. I'm not planning to stain them at all as I'm going with the tropical scheme and am looking for that sun-bleached look.
