Title: sea helper build
Post by: Jerry C on January 15, 2012, 07:32:06 am
Hello all I've been a bit slack with the abeille liberty build over the christmas new year period but I have been busy building my sons new boat, its the sea helper from the free plan from marine modeller magazine.
I actually started the hull quite a while ago but I finally got around to taking a mould from it.

prop shaft, bilge keels, prop shroud and rudder all out of brass.

a bit more advanced, the mdf wheelhouse is only a first template to check the fit, the finished one will be 3mm acrylic.
By the way, it's green because It's school holidays over here and painting the wheelhouse template is a safe way for the boy to be involved.

Ive just found a bit of a problem with the pivot point on the mast, Ive made a couple of changes to make it more robust for my son but have just noticed the folded mast will hit on the radar, does anyone know if radars have to go dead centre or can the be of to one side, a quick google shows most dead centre

Post by: Xtian29 on January 18, 2012, 06:46:03 am
no no, radar are some time out of centerline

a lot of Smit Lloyd are like that with a dedicated navigation radar on side http://www.g4ivn.co.uk/YARMOUTH/S/Smit_Lloyd_55.html

also ferries and military ships

It's true that most of ship have it on centerline as the main mast is on cneter line ...

Thanks xtian but it bugged me being wrong so I changed a few things to make it closer to the plan.

A bit more detail today, about ready for a coat of primer on the wheelhouse, the boy has asked for the hull to be a light green on the hull with the standard red bottom and a white cabin.
And now the wife wants a purple one.

Post by: Jerry C on January 18, 2012, 08:44:21 am
a bit of primer gives a better view of the detail.

Nice hot weather down here at the moment so the paints drying nice and quick, heres todays progress.
I think that will do for detail, I have to keep reminding myself its for a 7 year old

Looking at the 3D builder's image, the radar is on the Starboard side of the wheelhouse roof

Hi Ned, that 3d thingy is a great tool, Igot all the underwater detail from it, all the photos I can find show the radar dead centre  http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1319826,  but its all fixed now thanks anyhow.
I reallyhave to get going with it now, our biggest boat display of the year is on thursday, Its our local Australia day celebration called Henley on Mersey at Latrobe.

I was going to keep the tiller access as flat as possible but for ease of use I decided to make a hatch with a raised coaming and some rare earth magnets to hold it on.

I like it so much I'm going to build one - like yours with some plants the wife will never guess what it really is.  {-)

Hi Dave , glad you like my tank, it's two 44gallon drums cut down the centre then welded end for end so its the length of 4x44s.
The plants appeared after the boy started crawling and the below ground fish pond had to go so what better place to put the fish and when it gets a bit icky and green I drain it onto our vegie garden , you should see our tomatoes, might be a way for you to get it approved by the wife.

Hey Bill, confused me there (not hard to do)- I never realised that Liverpool and tasmanaia both have the river Mersey.

Hi Dave yes Devonport is right on the Mersey River , it where the ferry Spirit of Tasmania docks, its also where I used to have my hobby shop Mersey models hence the username mermod

Wel that's a fun fact - maybe I should visit Tasmania............. er you don't have big spiders do you?

We only ever hear Hobart mentioned here - there must be more to Tasmania than Hobart?

oops forgot this a build thread - sorry.

Oh Dave theres so much more to Tasmania than just little old Hobart, I only go there when the wooden boat festival is on, as for spiders just the usual, its the tasmanian tigers you need to watch out for.
Title: Re: sea helper build

Mermod are you winding me up or do you really have Tigers wandering around?

Dave
Title: Re: sea helper build
Post by: Jerry C on January 22, 2012, 01:04:07 am
Of course, thats why we have to keep our pets inside at night, no just kidding seriously the tasmanian tiger became extinct in the 1920s I think, but if you go for a drive down the west coast of tassie and see how dense and untouched it is its not hard to imagine them still running around out there.

Post by: Jerry C on January 22, 2012, 10:33:35 am
Hi nhp651, you certainly missed out, I moved here from Western Australia 17 years ago and I love it, the only thing is that nothing happens quickly, you HAVE to slow down, when I building kitchens in WA we could knock out 2-3 a day depending on size, got here and it was maybe 1 a month, but thats got a lot to do with being a bit isolated i guess.
Now back to the build, I shoehorned all the electronics in and it sits perfectly with no extra ballast, put it in the tank and pushed the throttle forward and gave myself a bit of a shock with the ammount of power it has, I am going to cut a disc that sits around the throttle on the TX so the boy doesnt kill anyone by accident.
While Im at it I must say thanks to the guy with his billings smit nederland build elsewhere on this forum, It was his idea to only have access through the cabin rather than a huge hatch on the deck that led to my set up.
I will put up some more photos after its launched on thursday.
Thanks for watching.

One last thing before launching, because the radio is a 4 channel from a plane I used to have, I noticed the boy tended to push the sticks in all directions until it did what he wanted so to remove any confusion I lasered up a couple of discs to go around the sticks.
The good thing about using an aero radio it that It has dual rates so it can be set to half throttle making it much easier for him.

Hi Martin, I,m currently unemployed so I have a fair bit of time on my hands and what better way to spend it than making model boats?
Thing may change shortly as I have a few job prospects, thats unless anyone out there needs a full time modelmaker?

oh I see, that issue has seen much lakeside debate over here, a lot of  "oh you shouldn't be on that frequency" and I agree air ch for air  land ch for land but after seeing what the Australian wholesalers import and get away with I gave up worrying, all I can say is thank goodness for 2.4 gig (except for my sub not sure whats gonna happen when FM is phased out)

Only takes one importer to get a caning to sort it.

not sure whats gonna happen when FM is phased out

It'll free up more frequencies for the phone companies, far more lucarative (not a miss spelling) for the Governments.

The one that Jerry shows could be 27moggies FM but it's not clear.

I hope I'm excused for reviving an old thread but I have had to replace the drive batteries in the Sea Helper and thought someone might like to see how she's faired over the last two and a half years.
She has become the "go to" boat when nothing else is charged, broken or stuck in the middle, also she has been found perfect for pushing in the 26cc boats when they stall or flip and is also the boat I use when someone says you cant take a boat there :).
At our local spot there is a polypipe about an inch below the water and my favourite trick is to nudge her up to it and hit the turbo or dual rate switch and she will push herself up the side of the pipe and out of the water before landing on the other side with an awesome splash.
Anyway over the last few months the old Itellect batteries have been dropping off to the point where run times are only about 15 mins instead of the usual 1 hour so I have popped them out, popped in some new ones and took some pics for you all.
