... they were just talking about time travel and the CERN experiment that seems to show that neutrinos were travelling faster
than the speed of light and could thisdbe the key to time travel?

Thought it was a good attempt to garner interest in astronomy. Shame it was only on for 3 nights, surely they could have ran it for 5 or 7 nights?
Went to Jodrell Bank today. my, that Lovell dish is huge.
Prox Cox was still on site talking to a school who'd won a prize of him talking astronomy to them. Seemed a nice chap although only had time to say 'Hello!'

The Local Beeb over here ran a few outdoor events.
Two nights of clear skies were a bonus
Rain the third nigh but they came up with a clevercam
could see through clouds!

Aye, it rained here on the third night. Second night was cloudy so could see beggar all. Only the first night was clear!

little factoid about the Lovell dish , when it was built they used the toothed turret rings from the scrapped battleships 15'' turrets of HMS Revenge and HMS Royal Sovereign for the dish to hold it at the angles it need to the sky

I read the very same bit on one of the info plaques they have around the dish.
While we were there, this huge thing changed direction and inclination. Pretty impressive seeing all that steelwork move around. By the time it had finished, it looked like it was pointing at the low Sun. In the information centre, a very helpful guide told us about the movement. Pressed a button and out popped two printouts of the actual signal the dish was actually receiving! think I'll frame it, it could be a signal from an ETI {-)

I visited Jodrell Bank with a group a while back. We were shown the Atomic clock that they used to synchronise the interferometer that is based there. The guide told us proudly that the clock was accurate to 1 second every 10,000 years, at which point every bloke there adjusted their watches.

The local astronomy group was inundated on Monday night and Amazon are reporting a 491% !!!
What an excelent series and I think Dara O Briain shouldn't be overlooked for his contribution, ie. keeping 'mad scientists' on track!

Just been in the local library and they have a selection of books on display about astronomy.
They also have a booklet from the BBC/OU and it has a working compass embedded in one page.
It is about 1/3 inch diameter. about 1/24 scale and looks good in the wheelhouse of my springer :-)) :-)) :-))

If any of you have iPads do yourself a favour and get star walk and solar walk. A couple of pounds for each app. Hold your iPad up to the sky and it will show you the names of everything in the sky. Switch on the camera and you can line up the actual celestial stuff with that on the screen. It also shows the location of satellites such as the international space station, and you can actually see it go across the sky on a clear night. Last night I saw, Venus Jupiter and mars using my I pad to locate them in the sky.

my phone has a similar feature called google sky map...doesnt show you satellites tho >>:-(

You cant really see the night sky on land due to the light pollution.
When crossing the Atlantic by sea and you look up, WOW, on a clear night you can see literally millions of stars.

Reminds me of a trip to the Austrian Tyrol as a teenager and waiting for the clouds to pass to see the stars that where familiar from London - it was quite a jolt when I realised that the "clouds" were in fact a mass of stars.

Bob thats one thing I remember from the far east - at sea, darken ship, and the stars looked huge and there were thousands of them.
We didn,t have air-con when we first went out to Singapore so I used to sleep on deck in my campbed and watch them for hours, then
sometimes about 4 a.m. it rained.
