And did you know there are 4 million people living in ireland but 44 million Irish passports in the world.

Yip!! Even though Ireland was classed as neutral, there were a lot of blind eyes turned in favour of the allies. The Donegal corridor was one where allied planes could pass through a narrow 'corridor' to gain access to the Atlantic from Lough Erne otherwise all aircraft would have had to run up through Lough Foyle and hang a sharp left to get to the Atlantic. All Irish Coastguard onservation towers had numbers on the top so that 'lost' aircrew could identify where they where along the West Coast of Ireland when flying from the states. Quite a number of crashed aircraft were packed up and discretely 'deposited' across the border to Langford Lodge in N. Ireland.
An interesting book is 'Landfall Ireland' which tells of Ireland's 'Neutrality'. Makes very interesting reading. My father was from Co Wexford and used to say 'Ireland was only Neutral in name'. Quite a lot of 'Eire' marked vessels were sunk by the German's

Yes Neil I did know about the airmen & women that crashed & were rescued. A lot were Americans & Canadians ferrying aircraft to the U/K. Declan is correct the Germans sunk at least 19 Irish ships during the war,there is a book about it, I think it is called the brave ships. My stepbrother during the war deserted the Irish army & went to Britain & joined the RAF, he was a navigator on Landcasters, he got shot down once but survived with bad burns. I also had two aunts that were nurses in London during the blitz & got killed without a trace, it lived with my grandma until she died @ 94 years old. I have always felt we in Ireland were neutral in name only. I also had an uncle working in Coventry throughout the war, building munitions. Mick B.

My mum, who was near Liverpool during the bombing, always talked about the German bombers using the lights of Dublin to find their way to Liverpool.

very interesting chaps :-)).....going to try to find those books mentioned now........I do like a good read.
Ps.......I must point out that I did know that Eire was neutral, but what I didn't know was that our allied forces were inturned if found on Irish soil until hostilities were over.

For allied airman it depended on who found them,
A good many more found that they always landed in
Northern Ireland :-))

There were a lot of blind eyes & a distinct lack of glasses, Americans were generally sent home, those that were hurt my Grandma told me were well taken care of.
