Title: Smoking...or lack of.
Post by: Patrick Henry on February 02, 2012, 11:10:44 am
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls...

It gives me great pleasure to announce that today is the fifteenth day that I have not touched a cigarette. To say I'm well pleased with myself is an understatement...

Well done sir!    :-)

How are you combatting the 'cofin nails'? Chewing gum, patches, love of a good woman?!!?

Thank you guys, much appreciated..

Martin...no gum, no patches, and no good woman (well, she's still in Canada, so all I get are emailed threats of all the nasty things she will do to me if I fail....)

I bought one of those Tornado electronic cigarettes...you get all the sensations of smoking, but all you are smoking is an oil based vapour. I have a suck on it every now and again when the need overcomes me, and today I've managed to do without that so far.

The main reason I decided to give up properly this time was my doctor's latest verdict on the state of my lungs, and his comment that if I didn't quit now (as in NOW) then I needn't contemplate booking a summer holiday, as I wouldn't make it. Fifty three years of (a) smoking (b) 40 years of diesel fumes and (c) the dust and cr*p that I'd inhaled over the years I spent driving a sweeper had all come together. I was also reminded that my brother died last Xmas Eve of smoking and welding fumes, my sister died a few years back of lung cancer, my father died of a heart attack brought on by smoking for fifty odd years, and then last week my fellow sweeper driver workmate died of a heart attack....sort of wakes you up, know what I mean?

I gave it up ten years ago and was really pleased with myself.....Not long after I was diagnosed with Asthma, something I'd never had before in my life which my doctor said can happen, I nearly started smoking again !....  %)

Still in every other respect I'm pleased, so well done and stick with it, it does make you feel a lot better when your body realises it's getting lots more oxygen !..  O0

Thanks chaps...

Just been down the village, breathing air that's well below zero isn't to be recommended...I struggled to breathe for a while. Looks like the doc was right...

On a lighter note, I'm now back indoors in the warm, with a large brandy. Purely medicinal, you understand...

Hi There.
On smoking most of us who have given up, have their own story,
this ones for the younger ones, who think it will never happen to them,
I gave up 25 yrs ago, it took me three yrs, xmas was allways my downfall!!
(JUST ONE), the worst words one can utter!!
It wasnt untill i was dianosed with prostrate problems that  i realised that smoking really can kill.
My surgeon, was so relieved when i told him that i had not smoked for over 20 yrs, that i thought hewas about to applaud.
As of then i had no idea that an enlarged  prostrate could be and often was cancerous, and that it would be a 40% chance of survival
that i was so glad that i had quit the evil weed. i am  now 74 yrs old and enjoying life.
So the moral is QUIT and live longer.
Happy xmas.   Cheers John.W.

You should stop counting in days now, Uggett. Months sounds somehow less impressive 'cos the numbers are smaller, and provides more of an incentive to keep it up. Me? 1 decade, 1 year and still counting, but only when someone mentions the subject.
Don't miss 'em at all; in fact, watching someone light up now seems completely alien to me.................very weird indeed

JW...wise words indeed, sir..

Boss...whichever way I look at it, I'm well pleased with myself. My 'giving up partner' is five days ahead of me, she relies very heavily on the E-cig at the moment, whereas I'm determined to quit that as well. I have the good lady in Canada coming over in July/August, so there's my target time...I want to be nicotine/E-cig clear by then.

The other incentive, of course, is to be able to do all night again what I used to be able to do all night...   %)

Rich, Do what my mother did when she quit, she still put her FAG money away every day (20 a day). At the end of three weeks she could not understand where all the money had come from. That is when you realise just how much you have been burning, stick with it, you are doing great, Nemesis

Keep it up Rich, smoking is severely frowned on in Canada, I have never smoked & it was hard to go to restaurant for a meal when all around you people were smoking, also on aircraft it really bothered me. Smoking is pretty much banned in public now & I am so glad. I wish you well do not give in. Mick B.

Thanks Mick...the good lady has already warned me that she'll be taking stern measures against me if I smoke in her presence....I'm hoping to go over to BC later this year and bring her back with me. I dare not fail....

Hi Rich, let me know when you are coming, we might be able to meet & have a beer & a good old Canadian steak. What part of BC are you going to ?, bearing in mind BC is bigger than U/K. How long do you intend to stay, this is a BIG country, you will require some time here to see anything worthwhile.I may be able to help with a bit of sightseeing. Mick B.
