Title: Cygnus GM38 1/16 HELP!
Post by: Netleyned on February 08, 2012, 09:58:58 am
I have just bought this hull etc. from a forum member and I need help.
Whoever started this project has installed running gear, rudder and some glassed in ballast(I think)
and then glassed the deck and wheelhouse in place using glass mat on the deck and leaving a hatch
for the installation of radio gear and batteries but no access to either motor or rudder post.
The motor is 12v and runs ok but there is no room for a 12v7ah gel cell. I can fit two 6v4.5ah cells 1 either side
with a radio tray over the shaft.
Ive done a float test and she sits level with the two gell cells in the bilges and about a pound weight on the deck
so no problems there.

I could cut a couple of access hatches for the motor and rudder post. I could mount a trawl winch on a plinth
that lifted off for access but my other main concern is how to finish the deck. It had originally been coated with
a green non slip finish that looked like it was straight off a real warship (looks like the rubberiod sandy stuff I remember)
and looked terrible and nothing could have been mounted on it so it has had to come off. There is still the remnants on the foc'sle
as I ran out of Fairy power spray yesterday.
Any ideas for getting a level deck finish now I have these raised areas of glass mat all around the deck edges.
A skim of filler and plank or plasticard or something.
The white bit on the transom was done by me to fill in a cutaway slot that looked like it had been cut for a pot shoot.
No idea what the motor is. Looks a bit automotive to me
Some photos  Any ideas gratefully received or does anyone recognise it?

I have managed to get the motor out .
Measurements are 75mm length 50mm dia and 5mm shaft.
It's swinging a 50mm 4blade brass prop.
There are connections across the brush gear indicating that a suppression capacitor
was fitted at some time but it's not there now. Also there is a strap from the body
to the neg terminal
The only markings are on the back end and read 15  7  20
Any ideas out there?

'No answer was the stern reply'

I bit the bullet and decided to remove the glass mat from the deck to give me the platform to build on.
Some sanding and filling and some more sanding of the bulwarks should do the trick.
After removing the motor I noticed that the shaft is slightly bent and also installed with the motor end a couple of mm to starboard of centre..
The skeg is in line but the rudder tube is installed 3mm to port of the centreline. This means it is not vertical.
I think I should have bought to start with. At least any mistakes would be my mistakes  O0 O0
Couple more piccies

Just realised after doing some measurements that I have been sold a Cygnus GM33 hull and not a GM38 Doh!

Having looked at the photos of the builds of the 1/12 and 1/16 GM33's,
they all seem to have bilge keels.
Mine has not had them fitted and the deck and wheelhouse are glassed in.
Are they on the plans or are they just additions by the guys building them.
If any one has a set of plans for the 1/16 GM33 that are surplus to requirements
I would be interested.

My husband and I almost cried when we saw the photographs.  You really have got your work cut out for you bringing back this boat to how it was intended to look. We produce the GM33 along with all the other Cygnus boats.
If you would like any advice or help we would be only to happy to help.
