A lot of cars are like that these days, it can be a major dismantling job sometimes. If you take your car to France you are required to have a full set of replacement bulbs but there isn't a hope in hell of changing most of them at the roadside in my Mazda 6. For one of them you have to take the wheel off and then the wheel arch liner to get to the thing. Just imagine trying to do that on a motorway on a wet night!

It's not a new problem though, I had an instrument light fail on a Vauxhall Cavalier once - the whole fascia had to be removed to replace it. Fortunately it was a lease car.

My Peugeot 206 Diesels rear cluster is that bad as well Martin , you have to remove the whole unit from the car then open the unit before changing the blown bulb putting everything back together and plugging it back in to usually find that another bulb has gone !!! I get my local car spares shop to change mine I just can't get the bleeding thing out !!!!

The front wing indicators are a pain in the gluteous maximus as well , its a wheel off , remove arch liner to get the holder out , something I cannot manage due to my bad back so as replacement covers are only a few ££ I break mine off then pull the holder out to change the bulb , put the new cover on and put it back lol , bit cavemanesque but it works for me lol

If you have the old model (previous to 2004) then you are on your own!

I have a 2005 Volvo S40 - changing the headlight bulb is really easy!

1) if you have the users manual then it is clearly laid out in there.
Clue :- it is partially visible in the awful video - You don't need
to get your hand to the back of the unit. There is a big 'pin' fitted
vertically into the wing which locks the whole light unit into place
pull it out, (0:29-0:30 into video)-and the light unit slides out
forwards and sideways (0:59 in the video) you unplug the cables
from the back of the unit, take the unit into the kitchen and sit
comfortably with a cup of tea or coffee, un-clip the backplate to
swap the bulb. Assembly is simply the same operations in reverse.

2) If you need the info from the users manual I can copy the relevant
pages and add some photos if you are not clear about anything.

Regards

Richard

removal of lamp units is often quicker and easier than trying to squeaze yourself into the ever tighter spaces the manufactures leave us . i wouldnt trust halfords with my pushbike let alone a motor car

Sorry triumphjon ... :o & also Martin. >>:-( ....who still has not changed the light globe   {-)

The marketing of the Volvo automobile in OZ in the 60's was as "the safest car in the world"  :police:

This then enthused many senior aged [60 year old +++] OZ citizens to purchase the said safest  car in the world  :P

So by mid 1960 we had some 4,000 mature [60 +++ year old drivers] driving the safest  car in the world...... %% & just to be safer drove @ 40 km/hour in 100 km/hour zones  %%

I think that this should explain the comments from both RaaArtyGunner & brianB6 ..........

The marketing costs of Volvo spare parts in OZ is also  %% ...........$750.00 for eight rubber bushes for the front suspension arms for the same 2004 Volvo cross over wagon

........ >>:-(   ....Derek

It could be worse. My smart car fourtwo had to have the front off to change the headlamp bulbs. Another step foreward for German technology. John.

i replaced the headlamp in my wifes laguna diesel recently, the battery has to come out of the tray (and off the vehicle) the air filter casing and hose with the air flow sensor has to be then removed and then finally you get to the back of the headlamp unit, ... my 10 yr old son could get his fingers in to remove the wire spring clip holding the lamp in... - i couldnt without amputating an index finger first... then you need to  return all compnents int otheir correct positions, reconnect battery and then recode the car to the keyless entry cards and all that.. recode the radio and reset the clocks.... etc....

total task took nearly 2 hrs... funnily enough the chap in halfonrds said they could not fit for their £2.50 fee or whatever it iis !!!- funny that.....

It's handy having small hands available , I got caught with my step brother about the same age as your son, under my mini (a long long time ago) he was putting the nuts on the engine mounts my father and step mother came home and caught me , they would not of minded  to much but it was one am and he was in his pajamas  :embarrassed:

Well you were all wrong!

The Volvo complete headlamp removal idea is quite brilliant.   :P

There I was, freezing my ears off in Halfords car park.... from bonnet open, change two bulbs, close bonnet,  8 minutes!!!

     Nice one my Volvo.

PS. Did you know you can by non-road legal headlamp bulbs in Halfords?!?!? I nearly did!
Apparently, they are call "rally bulbs" and are for "show cars".... 'street racers types'  I think!

see it wasnt a hard job after all , even the humble smiley faced ford fiesta its quicker to remove the grille & headlamp to replace the bulbs ! my own current car you have to remove the trim panel to remove the whole lamp , its still fitted with sealed beam fillaments ! !

Changing the  Head lamp bulbs was even easier on my Toyota.
Took it to the main Dealer and they changed them for free, all I had to do was pay fro the new bulbs...sum total of a tenner and had a nice free hot chocolate while watching TV in the warm....Bliss :D

They're only 'non-road legal' if you're fitting them to a, IIRC,  post '85 car  :-))

When I replace the headlights on my imported '84 Nissan Patrol, I fitted 110/85 bulbs - really lit the roadside up at night :-))

A word of warning. Not all car electrics can cope with the extra current draw of 100w bulbs. My Fiat switch failed, it got to hot. John.

And blinded everyone coming in the opposite direction! Round here with the country lanes, cars fitted with extra bright headlights can be an absolute menace and a danger to others. It's almost as bad when they are behind you and flooding your mirrors with light too.

Its not really the brightness of the lamps that causes the problem, its where the light beams put the light - that, and the fact that many drivers are unaware of the presence of the dip switch and/or the proper function of the level adjuster on the dashboard.
Possibly the "rally" ones have their filament sited differently which will give a different beam pattern, better for seeing where you are going to go, but not at all friendly to oncoming traffic because on a special stage, there shouldn't be any.  Mind, back when my best mate was playing a rallying, it was considered proper to have a planation of spots and fogs mounted on a bar across the front.Back to the original subject - my Scenic had a new bulb a few months ago - 5 minute job, cover off, unclip, new bulb, cover back on, done.  Its a good job the battery doesn't live under the bonnet, though, it might have been a bit crowded if it had.  Anybody know how to change tailgate gas struts?  {:-{

There are certainly a lot of cars around with badly adjusted lights and that doesn't help. But as you suggest, putting uprated bulbs into reflectors that were not designed for them can result in light patterns which are not what the designer intended eithe,r plus there is a lot more light as well. A further problem occurs when you are in an ordinary car being tailgated by a SUV which has its headlights mounted at about the same level as the back of your neck!

Any vehicle is subject to construction and use regs, which includes headlamp height, but poor adjustment doesn't help.  I suspect that there is more brainpower under the dashboard than facing it in many SUVs.  And SUVs are not the only class of car with that particular problem.
Gas struts sorted - between this post and my previous one, including finding a way through the packaging, reading the instructions (important), change of shoes, talk to the builder doing my windows and actually doing the job.
