Title: plans for R class submarine
Post by: Goingdown on February 17, 2012, 07:34:01 pm
Hello all,

Although I am currently working on refurbishing my krick type 7 I have been thinking about building an R Class as my first model from scratch or indeed a partial build if a hull is available.   Where might I be best to go to get a set of plans?   Oh and when is the next brockwell dive in?

All the best

Guy

Only seen three models, one in 1/96th scale, which was static, another in the Submarine museum at Gosport in what looked like 1/72nd scale, also static and the third in 1/32nd scale, which works and was built by Dave Forrest (Davy1), not sure if he makes mouldings available.

Pass on the next Brockwell Dive-in at the moment. Bit tied-up with other stuff at the moment, and the pool is undergoing refurbishment.

Hi Guy,

Yes as Andy (Subculture) says I built an R Class. She sails well. Long and thin and the stern controls are therefore "interesting" to fit in. I must admit I don't sail it much now because things like my Holland and ORP Dzik fit in the car better!

As for drawings, I parcelled them all up and sent them to John Lambert in the hope that he would do some of his very nice drawings. I haven't heard anything from him about it so some enquiries from everyone may spur him on!

Andy knows that I don't make mouldings. We talked long and hard about  this within the AMS and it isn't practical. Transport, mould damage all make it really difficult.

I do have an article I wrote for the AMS mag which I can send to you if you pm me your address. The R class were lovely submarines and are one of the great "might have beens" of British submarine history. As fast as a Type 21 but in the first world war!

David

Guy - Hope you have seen the thread in this section " Model sub related events for 2012" Plenty to choose from!

The CAD type plans are available in vector format. They could be scaled to any size you wish and then printed off at a bureau, giving you a set of drawings that you can directly build from.

A 1/48th scale model would be a handy size, whilst allowing enough room for radio and ballast system. The boat lends itself to a dry or wet hull arrangement.

As the hull is of constantly changing cylindrical form, you could construct a master using traditional plank on frame techniques, with solid ends carved to shape. Another possibility if you have access to a large lathe, is to turn two thirds of the hull from solid, and carve the non-cylindrical bow by hand.

Just to point out that my model is the one dripping with water in Andy's post!

(Photo must have been taken at Norwich.)

PS Andy, you may be pleased to know that you were kind enough to provide the epoxy glass sheet for the superstructure. Just the job - Thank you!

Yes I remember- 0.5mm 'indestructonium'. Good stuff, but unfortunately not always easy to source.

I placed the three pictures in the order they were mentioned. The 1/96th scale model was by Dave Brown, who I think has modelled just about every class of British sub, although I haven't seen examples of the modern nuclear classes- perhaps they don't grab his attention.

I've no idea who made the 1/72nd model on display at Gosport.

Anyone know what the bar running along the side, just above the bilge keels was for? Was it a rubbing strake,or part of the sensor array?

Thank you for the information, I think the R class makes an interesting subject - a bit of an underwater hotrod.   The Wikipedia article mentioned that they were often charged by the dockside as it would take a whole day to charge the batteries from the engines.

Davy1 - pm sent and thankyou for your kind offer

I can't for the life of me fathom what those side rails are for.

Information on its way to you, Guy!

BTW I wouldn't recommend the "lost foam" GRP method I used as described in the article. Go  for conventional male plug (built from almost anything!) to female mold etc. (Nigel E has a nice build log on the AMS website - happening as we speak!)

I think that is just a rubbing strake. Sensor arrays came somewhat later!

As I read somewhere, she had a 1 or 2 very rudimentary hydrophones feeding into an "electronics " cabinet that looked like a wardrobe!

I posted that link in my first reply, Mike.

Well, obviously, no one spotted it, otherwise I would have received tons of appreciative fan mail, and seen dozens of posts here saying how wonderful Caswell Inc was for doing all that hard work of finding, scanning, and hosting such important documents.  Yes, it's best if this sort of thing was brought to the fore!
I await the deluge of mail and accolades now we've cleared this up.

Mike,
You are so wonderful and thank you for the hard work you put in not expecting any compensation and for graciously offering the plans to all who seek you out. Wow (pause while I roll my pant legs up a little higher) you are the best. What would we, nay, what would the world do without you? Civilization can recognize its foundation in you. (pardon - I seem to be coughing up something).

All joking aside, Mike you really do offer a lot of help - I know you have helped me! Thank you.
Peace,
Tom

Good news about the build, Desi.

The superstructure was deliberately made very simple to reduce drag, which makes the modelers task easier.

Since most of this thread was written, I see that another R class has become available
