Title: Taping Hulls.
Post by: mtaylor819uk on April 02, 2007, 09:17:48 pm
Hi all,

This is my first boat build, and I am stumped at the first hurdle  :( It says to begin with taping the struts to the hull. I phoned the local model shop today to ask for the hull tape, and he hadn't got a clue, the same as me !

Are there any groups or people near basingstoke that would be willing to show a complete novice how to crack on with this model ?

Thanks everyone,
Mark

What are you building Mark?
If you have a problem photos can make it easier to solve.

Hi there,

I am building a battlefleets kit, a Elco PT 136 - Scale model 1.24. So I am at the point of putting in the bulkheads. There are 5 of them, which came with the kit, and were pre-cut. The instructions are:

The hull should be taped at each bulkhead position to ensure the correct beam width as per the following measurements.

However the widths given are 10mm less than that of the bulkheads, so didn't want to go cutting them until i understood the taping bit.

Hi Mark
Sounds like they want you to tape across the hull from side to side to keep the sides of the hull the correct distance apart so they wont be forced out by the bulkheads.
Is it possible to check your deck width with the bulkheads and the dimensions they have given you.
If your deck is the same width as your diimensions your bulkheads might need trimming.
Measure twice and cut once.

Ok really dumb question here, but I have only ever built a plastic kit before, what tape etc. do you mean.. Is there a guide somewhere I can look at ?

Thanks for all your help so far, sorry to be such a pain.

Tape is normally used (apart from masking) to hold items in place to check fit or whilst gluing. There is no such thing as 'hull tape' most people use paper masking tape. Are the struts you refer to the fore and aft stringers to give shape and strength to the hull? I agree with your caution I would be very wary of cutting anything until I was sure I fully understood the instructions. 10mm seems a lot to trim. As Richard says a few photos would probably help enormously.

If you really are unsure wait.
You will get the answer on here but it might take a few days.

It might also be worth taking a look at this book

In case you dont get your problem solved here, it might be worth a trip to Eastdrop park boating lake in basingstoke on a sunday morning (from around 9) as speak to the club members they are always willing to help and guide you in the right direction.

On the other hand pictures speak a thousand words as they say ;D

Do you think that by 'taping', JH simply means measure the hull width at the designated points to ensure accuracy?
As he says, 'as per the following meaurements'.

Whatever else he may be, as a modeller John Haynes is a perfectionist. I'd be very surprised if any parts in a kit designed and authorised by him, needed anything more than a light sanding to fit perfectly.

If all else fails, ask the man himself

Can you post any photos of the hull etc to clarify your problem because 10mm seems to be a bit much to have to remove, normally a bit of sanding down will solve the problem.

Hi Guys,

Right been doing some research... It is an earlier kit than the one shown up above. This was a full kit, distrubted by Jatika Ltd, who sold it on behalf of John Haynes. But they stopped doing it about 8 years ago.

A very kind forum member spoke to me on the phone earlier, and has agreeded to give me a pointer in the right direction on Tuesday... Thank you for all of your kind comments, and helpful tips, I have now managed to tape in the Bulkheads, and all seems good so far, but a diagram shows the bulkheads are either cut to slot around the lip of the hull, or the lip of the hull is cut to slot in the bulkhead (not very good diagram) so leaving it at this stage until I meet Alan, who will hopefully show me the error of my ways..

I am going to work out the wiring now.. (hopefully).. I will post pics etc, after tuesday hopfefully showing progress.
