I was in a film with Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine. "Without a Clue". Anybody remember that? It was a Sherlock Holmes spoof and I was an extra in the parts filmed up here in the Lakes. I can be clearly seen behind Mr Caines shoulder in one shot and have, it true British fashion, discussed the weather with Ben Kingsley  :embarrassed: {-)

I once met Mike hailwood, Donald Healey, Lee Marvin and Keenan Wynne at a Classic car and Bike race meeting at Amaroo Park, north of Sydney in 1977.
We shared our beers with Keenan Wynne and he invited us to dinner that evening. he and Lee marvin were staying at the same hotel and carried on (amusing) abuse across the dining room from table to table...had us in stiches for most of the night.

and in 1979 I was run over by Barry Sheene at the press day of the  London Motor show.......I was watching some dolly birds sprawl their bodies over a Porche and he, in his wheelchair after his monumental crash in which he had plates in his body all over  was looking elsewhere...he ran over my foot.............I looked down, he looked up and then said something to me I'll never forget..........

"Sorry mate.......... just can't get used to four wheels".we laughed hysterically about it and then shook hands and went our own ways, lol

Are you sure about 1979 Neil??

Daytona was 1975 and his other 'biggie' was silverstone in 1982.

1979 was probably the best British Grand Prix ever with the Sheene and Roberts dice that just about ran for the whole race.

Oh, I met him in 1976 at Oulton Park, (when a 'Paddock Pass' was actually worth something).

We were watching the race from the pits at Oulton one year when Barry sat up at the entry to a corner and gave the middle finger salute to someone in the crowd.  The stewards had a word with him when the race was over but took no action. I asked him what happened and he replied that someone was flashing a "F**k Sheene" T-shirt and he just wanted the guy to know he had seen it. My boy ,now over 40 , still has some links from Sheene`s bike chains collected over a couple of seasons, still treats them like jewels.

I met the Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia in 1973.
I was in the forces then and we were invited to represent the British contingency at the World Navy Week.  %%  %%
The Emperor was in Addis Ababa and he came around and chatted with quite a few of us.

I met the gong bloke - he came to give us a talk at school. He even brought the gong that made that sound - but it was ony about 2 ft dia. He said that one the size of the one in the picture would break all the mikes and burst eardrums!

yes.you are right.......wasn't even teaching in 1979,,had just left a school...got my wires crossed..............it would be the 82 or 83 show......... as I'd been teaching cdt and a lad in my class had entred the BP build a car competition and won his section in the under 16's.the prize was tickets for him and his family and myself to Bordon in Hampshire for the prize giving and then a hotel and car show.......so yes you are quite correct....was around the 82/83 era..........I left that school in July 83 so sometime before then............god how the brain becomes fudge at my age, lol

..... one of the blokes that banged the bong - Ken Richmond.......

Let me tell you a little story about the clip. Yes, it's Ken Richmond banging the gong, but the sound that went with the clip was actually played by percussionist and lecturer James Blades. He came to my primary school when I was around 10, and gave a brilliant lecture on all sorts of percussion instruments. During that lecture, he explained that the film of the clip was fine but the sound was not what Rank wanted, so it was recorded again, with James Blades playing a much smaller gong.

I once met 60's pianist Russ Conway, that's me in the coat and the school cap!

Met Jack Palance in 1975 in Venice on a run ashore with a few oppos.  He bought us a round of drinks and invited us to a party in the house he was renting while making a movie there with free booze loads of women, including willing to please actresses.  We all thought he looked a little bit like Jack Palance but agreed amongst ourselves he was just a fantasist.  Drank his beer then told him in no uncertain terms thanks for the beer but we werent that gullible we knew his game!!.  Found out next day it was Jack Palance and it was some party!

Here's one for "someone I nearly met"!
I kept a yacht in Chichester harbour (UK) and about 10 years ago was asked by my M.D. if I could take a visiting American couple (friends of customers) out sailing for the day as a bit of P.R..
I was having a grumpy day and said that I would if I had to, but how did I know they would behave on the boat and did they know anything about sailing. The M.D. went and asked if they had any knowledge of sailing and came back and said the husband was bit of a sailor. I agreed and it was all arranged for the next day but they didn't want anyone to know they were in the UK. Someone thinking they were quite important I thought.
Anyway, the next morning, I set out to take my new crew out for the day, only to be told that they had had to call it off because of a family crisis. "Oh, and by the way" said my M.D. "I found out his name, he's called Ted Turner and he's married to a girl called Jane Fonda"!!!!! (she, the M.D., actually had no idea who they were).

I met many famous motor racing stars of the 70's when I used to be a fire marshall at Silverstone, these included Derek Warwick; Arton Senna; Nelson Piquet; James Hunt; Mike Wilds; Nikki Lauda; Chris Amon; Graham & Damon Hill; Jonathon Palmer and others. Also met some of the great Sportscar and Touring car drivers from the same era. Another person I met on a couple of occasions was Jimmy Saville, once he came with a patient to collect a cheque for an electric wheelchair that I had helped raise money for by playing in a 24 hour dart marathon. He also came into the Close I lived in and spent about 10 minutes playing with the kids in the street whilst a neigbour dished up his dinner.

Dear All,

As far as I am concerned, I think the best person I have ever met (though I have met far 'greater' so to speak), was the son of Barnes Wallis. After taking over the Honister Quarries in 1980 (Buttermere & Westmorland Green Slate Co.Ltd.), an inherited order for the finding and making of a Headstone to very specific parameters for Sir Barnes Wallis's was, as far as I was concerned, of the greatest and utmost importance - and a privilege.

Yes I know he invented the Bouncing Bomb, the Tall Boy, and the Wellington bomber, but he hated things of war, but it was forced and he had to do something. It was the time and that's that.

His son, also Barnes, came to stay for a few nights, and what a privilege to be able to talk to such a person. Just as innovative as his Father as you would expect!

How time goes by, I had briefly forgotten!

Regards, Bernard

p.s. The only thing that annoyed me slightly was that after a superb aesthetically looking piece of stone was found/created, the masons engaged to finish off - with very close instruction by the client - proceeded to round it off a touch too much! In my opinion anyway. If anyone would like a scan copy of the actual finished and in place headstone, please ask and I will Post it here. B.

Lets also remember that there are an awful lot of nice helpful people here too who sometimes go quite unappreciated.
I've met just a few Mayhem members up to now, and what nice chaps they have all been too.

Earlier Polaris mentioned Barnes Wallace and his hatred of the things he had to invent for the war.

Well, in 1968 Barnes Wallace's camaraman came to our college and showed us his film collection of the bouncing bomb experiments, which may have been "unofficial" copies since they were not censored in anyway and showed all the details that were not made public until 20 years later.

One of the more famous shots he took was when the bouncing bomb broke up and came up the shingle beach and narrowly missed him - I did ask him whether he thought of moving quickly out of the way of the bomb - he replied that the thought had never crossed his mind and that he was just concentrating on doing his job for Mr Wallace.

The other films he showed were the anti-shipping mini-bouncing bomb tests taken in a Scottish loch against some old captured Italian warships.

Remarkably, he had colour footage of Barnes Wallace's post-war life saving work on anti-icing systems for fishing vessels. The system consisted of pneumatic panels and tubes that were fitted to critical parts of the fishing vessel that would expand under air pressure to break off the ice to prevent capsizing; a lot of fishermen were losing their lives because of the ice. I've metioned the existence of this colour footage to the Barnes Wallace Museum staff at Brooklands and they said it was the first that they had heard of it!

Ian.

John Savident used to be my Scout Master when I was 12-13 in Ashton-u-Lyne late 50s.          Ralf Reader in the Gang Show in Manchester.           Princess Margret and Dennis Healey MOD and Stewart Grainger making a film on the Artillery firing range when I was posted to Hong Kong in 1964-66, he paid for cases of San Mig. beer for all the lads.          And the Duke of Edinburgh had a couple of words with me,  the second word was "off ".

Dear All,

Well... and please don't think I am being 'sickly sweet'... because this could be easily missinterpreted.

I can't think of a better bunch and number of people in one place than I have met any other place elsewhere: viz., Mayhem. A few (& one most partic.), and they all well know who they are but I will not say, make Mayhem what it is... for me anyway.

So, ultimately, though I have met all sorts, at the end of the day, it is those who help you who are the most important people who you will ever meet.

Regards, Bernard

Dear Armc,

Absolutely not so... you know, I can't remember how long I have been a Member, but it must be five years anyway (I stand to be corrected!).

What I have said is fact. I know I haven't been 'easy' a couple of times, but there has been reason. Those who know me know the why's and wherefore's in the latter, and, furthermore, know that I will always readily admit when I am wrong - but when right I will always stand my ground - without fail. For a few months between late 09 and early 10, I was a bit 'out of order' shall we say, and, whilst no excuses, there was reason all the same. It was an unexpected/very sudden/& not pleasant learning curve not experienced before... but time always being the healer, one continues to learn the grand scheme of things.

Regards, Bernard
