Title: 9' foot Aircraft carrier - motors?
Post by: Martin (Admin) on April 03, 2007, 02:57:56 pm

Via email to Mayhem....

Hi  there Martin,

I  hope  you  can  help,  I  am  presently  building  a  9  foot  1:144  scale  USS  Enterprise  aircraft  carrier,  and  I  need  4  motors  to  power  it,  2  motors  each  running  off  Electronize  FR15  speed  controllers  and  a  12volt  battery,  what  do  you  suggest,   its  my  first  attempt  at  model  building.  I  have  4  x  540  in  at  present  and  it  is  VERY  slow  and  takes  a  long  while  to  start  moving  and  the  motors  get  VERY  hot.

What  about  golf  trolley  motors  BUT  they  spin  at  150rpm  is  that  too  slow?

Thanks,
Melville

Hi there,
I would suggest getting some car fan motors
I have seen a 1/96th scale Nimitz ran on these
and it performed well. If you look in the link below
some people are discussing the best motors to use

hope this helps

Melville,

I'm working on a CV-6 USS Enterprise of about the same size.  I just ordered 4 of the motors found in the following link:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/item/DCM-266/400200/DC_MOTOR,_3-24_VDC_.html

They seem to be Graupner Speed 700 in size and performance.  Seem a good deal at $3.50 each, that's a bit less than 2# each (I don't know how to make the UK Pounds sign on my computer).

A couple of reviewers used them to replace the motors in the children's toy "Power Wheels".  That's the "Barbie Jeep" sized toy that children ride in.

Hope this helps.

Mike

9 feet at 1/144th scale?, its closer to seven and a bit surely, I used 4 Buhlers in mine when I did scratch building in the old days on 6 Volts, the medium Buhlers and before anyone starts, YES, I have probably splet boolers wrong!

Melville--  What does your great beast of a model weigh?  I'm wondering how much ballast I need to scrounge up.

The four motors arrived yesterday.   I'll try to make time to test them this weekend and post the results.  I have a handfull of props from 45mm to 60mm.  I'll run the test at 12v direct drive.

As always, a possible alternative solution.
Go with the car fan motors (or similar), but only drive 2 props and let the other 2 freewheel. You won't see any difference in performance and slow speed handling could be better. BY

For those size props a 2:1 or 3:1 gearbox on a 550 motor will drive her well and with the 550 motors you have the option of using 6 or 12 volts.

A quick note to follow up on the motors I ordered:  They arrived a few weeks back and I wasn't happy with the low speed performance of the motors with any of the esc's that I have.  I've found that the Astro Flight 208D Marine esc is a very, very nice unit.  I was lucky enough to find a brand new pair on ebay for a very nice price.  I haven't tested them with the Astro Wattmeter under load yet but the lowest speed on the Astro's is very slow tick-over of the prop.  One of my favorite things to do is to have the throttle set for just a few clicks of power and see if I can maintain control with the prop just ticking over.  When I get couplings and prop shafts sorted I'll test and post the results.
