Title: Planking opinions please
Post by: HawkEye on March 08, 2012, 10:23:03 pm

I've just acquired a 24" Huntsman 31 kit (grp hull) from a charity shop (of all places),so an honest opinion from those in the know would be much appreciated,I've read every post I can find regarding planking and digested much information but I have never tried it in practice. On that note would it be straightforward to obtain a result like the original ?.

why do you want to re do the original....it looks very neatly done and a good job to.
without seeing in in close up though, is it individually planked or a printed deck.
If the former a light sanding down to remove ant crud and then a nice clear varnish would make it look as good as new.

what a lovely boat to find in a charity shop.......you lucky man.
neil.

Hear is a picture of RED181's boat he has planked his with pine it is the 42" boat though, he started with the outside plank and pre bent the planks on a jig over night then fitted them. this was a copy of a full sized boat most boats are different
can you tell us the name of your 24" kit or have you a picture.

Neil the picture is of a model  {-)

at only 24 " it could lend itself to being a huntress instead of a huntsman 31 , depending on the flare of the bow ?

Here is the planking on my 34" Huntsman.
I soaked mine then clamped them to a former till dry.
Started from the outside working in one plank each side at a time.
I used a 1mm plank thickness inbetween, you could use a Hacksaw blade to get the gap.
Then when dry I filled the gaps inbetween the planks with woodfiller, when dry sanded to finish.
3 coats of resin rubbed down to a mirror finish after the last one.
3 coats of laquer, job done. Very time consuming but a joy to do.

Thanks for the replies folks, a bit of a typo on my part possibly due to the copious amounts of glenfiddich  :} its a 34" precedent huntsman kit untouched, still wrapped so I'm gathering information before I start building (nice deal for £40). I very much like the effects achieved on the two models shown and thank you for sharing the technique used.Just one question John if you don't mind - were the planks cold soaked or steamed ?.

Sorry Hawkeye,
I just put them in a grill pan / meat tin and poured a kettle of boiling water on them,
and let them have a good soak, especially the Mahogany planks.
you will need to bend them on a former to the shape of your hull or the design you want.

I made a plywood former about an inch wide, piled my planks on top of each other.
I placed a hacksaw blade on the outside, sandwiching the planks in-between the plywood
former and the hacksaw blade, and clamped them together.
The blade, or strip of metal is to stop the planks from splintering when being bent or when they are drying out.

hope this helps

john

Thanks for the info John, sounds achievable, I'll get some planks and do some testing.

Hello HawkEye
I live in France and read Modele Reduit de Bateau. In the builds discussed the French seem to use ebony veneer between the planks to represent the caulking. I have recently bought some for my next project but haven't started the plank on frame hull yet.
All the best       Brian

Which one do you have? the wood or glass hull version?

Hi,
It's the glass hull version, untouched in the box  :-)) . I'm thinking it will be a winter project as this year's turning out a bit hectic so far !
