Post by: Martin (Admin) on March 19, 2012, 12:58:59 am

The Great Forum Crash of 2012 -  Postmortem !!!

                                                                         Are we back?!?!?

Please tell me we're back and I've not finally entered the Twilight Zone!

The membership list seem somewhat truncated but at least we're back on-line.
We can now work on all other issues as we go.

In the meantime , if your name is not recognized - please just re-register.

.... well that was a rather stressful week!

Regards,   Martin  - off to consume vast amounts of liquor.....%%

Martin is a hero. Interestingly, the temporary site did not recognise Tobyker, but the repaired site knows me at once.
I'll say it again - MARTIN IS A HERO.

I notice that, having had to recreate my login, I no longer own my own Nobby build log. Could this cause me any problems with editing? Nothing springs to mind but I'm wondering.
Title: The Great Mayhem Meltdown of 2012

Well I'm still trying to work through the problem but initial findings:

1. Don't always believe what the software writers say about their backup system.
2. A Hosting company's IT support dept. can actually be less than useless.
3. Some people will go out of their way to help you, if you sound pathetic enough.
4. An untested backup  system  is like a condom with a pin hole in it, you'll only find out when it's too late!

Martin, it sounds like Mayhem got off lightly, (apart from the members list).

Another forum I'm a member of got hit a couple of years ago, when they went to restore the backup, the first 'usable' thread-database backup was 10 months old, (ironically the members database was okay), they lost a lot of data and members because of it <:(

As the IT-Admin said afterwards - every week that so**ing backup gets a restore check <*<

Me to I'm Back..Post count not bothered about and luckily I get a  copy of all my Pm's on my email so no problems..

One point Worth Mentioning if not already done so, If you have registered and have not received your registration email check you Spam folder, and not just the one on your PC as most providers, Virginmedia, BT, Tiscali all have off site filters which stop a lot of spam even getting to your PC but are kept on file for you to view when you log in externally.. I know this as this is where Both this registration went and the registration to the Temp Forum was When I remembered to look there..

Well Done Martin and team.. :-))

Do we actually know what happened when the wheels came off and if it is likely to occur again?

Title: The Great Mayhem Meltdown of 2012
Post by: Martin (Admin) on March 20, 2012, 04:59:22 am

Interesting question Colin...

I was working on those annoying '504 timeout' errors  and the web hosting company were being less than helpful. Basically
until I can say to them 'This is what the error is. It's clearly your fault. Fix it.' They are just washing there hands of the whole
affair, basically saying. ‘There’s nothing wrong OUR end!’ So I was pointed by SMF to a  '24 step, self help guide’ and I was
making my way through that, deleting all the old thumbnail etc, 26, 000 of them!  Etc, etc. Some of it makes perfect sense
and some of it you have to go on trust. So I’m working  though the guide and doing what they say... but if something breaks,
all you get is, "well it shouldn't do that!" and then you're screwed stuffed!

Backups and spare tyres
I'm paranoid about backups and take them regularly and you ‘sleep easily’ in the fact you have them safely ‘in the bag’.
( Remember the old Model Boats forum?! From memory it couldn’t be restored for technical and/or commercial reasons.)
So how many of us have got a new car, (new to yourselves anyway!), put it on the driveway, jacked it up and test fitted
the spare wheel to make sure it's the right one, there's nothing wrong with it &  it fits properly on each corner?!!! .... No?
Me neither. I check it once or twice a year, kick it to make sure it's got air in it and that's about it.

Now we come to "Forum Maintenance".
This is what SMF says it's got air in it and that's about managing a forum:

“Routine
Check all files against current versions - Check!
Find and repair any errors - Check!
Recount all forum totals and statistics - Check!
Empty out unimportant logs- Check!
Optimize all tables to improve performance. - Check!

Backup Database - This area allows you to save a copy of all the posts, settings, members, and other information in your
forum to a very large file. For larger forums, this backup may not be able to backup your entire database, in which case
you may want to backup your data by other means such as using ‘phpmyadmin’, or some other database backup utility.
Frequent backups are recommended, perhaps weekly, for safety and security.”

Now I have backups going back 6 years and several things should rang alarm bells;
1.   No Backup scheduling system,
2.   No real backup verification system.
3.   No restore facility.
4.   Unable to compress files due to size.
5.   Other SMF users experiences with SMF Backup / Restore.

Now not only should I have a backup, I know I should have verified backup – granted. When I run the backup, it run and says
‘Completed, no errors.’ – well that’s good enough, surely?! Well over the last week of blind panic, is turns out the inbuilt system
is about as good as a paper propeller! – It looks the part but in actual fact, won’t stand up to any real world test. Doing a lot of
searching on the matter, reoccurring words pop up, such as, ‘useless’, ‘terrible’, ‘rubbish’, ‘contemptible’, ‘ expletive’, ‘double expletive’,
‘Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?’

Now with the growth of Mayhem’s popularity, we had to move the website a couple of times and therefore we/be had to
move all the data (currently about 9Gig) to a completely new system. We’ve successfully done this using the forum backup
system and the help from a host keen to get your new business, so I know that the backup system does work… until your
forum gets to a certain, unspecified size, then things are different!

You’re only as good as your last backup
Having spoken and communicated with several 'Tefal heads' * over the last week and it turns out I could have done some
things better;
1.   Used myPHPadmin
2.   User Cpanel backup
3.   Created individual SQL table backups.
4.   Regularly test the backup on the Temp / test forum that I’ve had for years!
5.   Bang harder on the hosting company door demanding better support with the ‘504 errors’!

One particular Mayhemer has done extensive work for us and it looks like we may well be able to restore the full members list
to about 3 weeks ago but I’m holding off on that until I understand the full implications on all the new accounts we’ve created
over the last day or so.  I must say it’s heartening to see how many Mayhemers have rejoined the forum so quickly!

Thanks again for all the encouraging emails and messages, it really did help in the very late & dark hours of the forum being
down and blind panic setting in. It really is an honour to provide a simple website and forum for you guys!

Just thought that I share this with you because this is OUR forum.
Your comments and observation welcomed.

… It’s 05:00 now… I reedit this into a form of English later today.... after many buckets of coffee.

Fergot to add the smiley re my comment about one posting. Although the forum isn't like it was regards Avatars and signatures, perhaps we should wait until Martin tells us that the "Boat" is running on an even keel before trying to sort our own bits out?

In some sections on the forum I have 2002 posts (which I suspect was a figure put in by Martin, but looks about right). In others I have none, and am marked as 'Guest'. No great issues with this, but Martin might like to know.

By the way, might we get our PMs back at some stage, or are they unrecoverable?

Did they ever disappear? If you didn't have to re-register then you were one of the lucky ones whose data weren't lost. This post is an experiment for me because yesterday evening I tried twice and the system ignored me.  <:(  Since then Martin has entered a number of posts in my profile so, if this is displayed, that may be the answer. When you register and it won't accept you original name, try putting the number 2 next to it.

That way, we should know who was posting and it might make it easier to tie up the links.

Not a big deal, but when I tried to re-register with my original name of "BobK" it would not work, but registering with the 'new' name of "Bob K" (added space chr) it allowed me in.  Now "BobK" is only a guest, I can't log in as that because the email address is already in use by "Bob K".

Raaaaaaarty,

Isn't that how it's supposed to work {:-{

I usually get 1 notification per thread, so if I'm 'watching' 10 active threads, after 1 hour away I can have 10 notifications, (although if I don't read them there's still only 10 emails)

In your example you're showing 2 seperate threads, ergo you should get 2 notification emails :-))

AAAAHHHHHH!!! just re-read your post, and I think I see what your problem is,

If you go to your 'Profile', then select 'Notifications and Email' (under 'Modify Profile'), you'll see a line near the top on the right that says - 'Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply.'  make sure the box is ticked, (I think by default they're not)

Great to see the site up and running again thanks to all who have put their time and indeed knowledge in to getting it up and going again, I have managed to re-register again as advised good to be part of the Mayhem community again, one wee question when I logged in it said "time logged in 9mins" and there were no replies to my messages or posts etc, I presume this stuff was all lost when the site went down, no matter great to have it up and running again and thanks again to those with the knowledge and skill to get the site going again.
All the best, John.

I finally got reregistered after several tries over several days.  It would be helpful if the rules for passwords were spelled out, instead of having to guess how long it needs to be, and what letters are permissible or not, and any other rules.  And why is all the security necessary?  What needs to be so secret about a bunch of old farts talking about model boats?

Just checked that the "Nautical, strange but true" thread was still there.....I'd hate to lose it. Being the 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict I zeroed in on that, and was surprised at many of the subsequent comments by "mayhemmers" were in a way very apposite to the situation we, as a country, now find ourselves in. Lack of resources. Money, in other words. But our "politicians" still seem to find the defence of the country subservient to squandering £Billions on welfare. I despair.....again. BY.

There is a lot of money going in. We are the third biggest power in the world by military expenditure. Only the US and China are above us.

On the other hand, France and Russia, just below us, seem to be getting better value for their cash.

Something gives me the feeling that there is quite a gap between the money we put in, and the military value that we get out...

From he reports I have seen, Russia doesn't seem to be doing too well at all. A lot of their gear doesn't appear to work or goes wrong and their arms exports on the naval side have a very poor reputation.

I must admit that I haven't been tracking military export quality much - my suggestion was really based on the idea that they actually HAD a navy, whereas ours seems to be vanishing...

Martin

I can only guess how much work/ time you must spend making this by far the best UK model boat forum. As everybody else has said you deserve an enormous thank you not just from those who post but also from those who lurk in the background.

A QUESTION

Has anybody else noticed that getting access to the forum has now become unreliable? I would say that about a third of the time when I try to open the forum in my browser nothing happens & if I try again immediately still nothing. If I leave it 5 minutes then it is likely that it will open instantly. The same ratio & results apply when I click on links - say to open a thread - within the forum.  All other sites in my favorites work fine - including when this link has failed to connect.

I wonder if we need a FAQ?

It could cover the timeline of what happened, the current state of the forum, what is expected to be done over the next few weeks/months and what forum members can best do to maintain the smooth running of the board without disturbing Martin more than necessary...

The great Doggy Geezer put this together for us - Top Man.   :-))

What happened?

During Jan / Feb 2012 annoying  '504 Tijmeout' errors started effecting many members logging into to the Forum. After many queries to the site hosting company and to SMF, the Forum people it was suggested several s/w upgrades were required. The  biggest of these was initiated on the evening of March 13, 2012. It was expected that the forum would be off the air for a few hours....
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11159.msg359774#msg359774 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11159.msg359774#msg359774)

It turned out that the inbuilt backup facility doesn't work properly, and an arduous manual; rebuild had to be undertaken. This kept the forum unavailable for several days. It eventually returning on 19 March.

So everything's all right, then?

Well, yes and no. The forum is back up, but the majority of User account / Login details were trashed (6,0000+ in fact!) Many, many posts lost the link to there owners and all those saved PM were also deleted as they suddenly had no owners! These are slowly being investigated and repaired where possible...

Ah. So what will I notice when I sign back on?

Some of you may be able to sign on as if nothing has happened. But many of you will find that your old username/password will not work.

What should I do then?

Go to the (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/Themes/babylon/images/english/register.gif) (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=register)  button above and register your name again, as if you were a new user. Once you have gone through the registration process you will be able to access the forum again. BUT you will be treated as a new user...

In this case, can I pick a new name?

Of course! But don't pick a name that was already known to be connected to an original user. People who had signed on under a particular name on the old system will have first choice if they want to use that name again.
Remember to fill your profile in again - in particular your location!
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1448.0
 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1448.0)

Does this mean that my old posts, personal messages, pictures, avatar and the rest have gone?

Not necessarily. Just no longer connected to your 'new' username. We are slowly going through the files and re-connecting people where possible. All the old posts are still visible on the forum - just not connected to your new name, even if they have your name against them...

But I had important information in PMs/a spectacular avatar/a really high post number/etc! What should I do!

Keep calm and don't panic! Martin is still in recovery mode, and we hope to get a lot of our data back eventually. This may take some weeks, however. In the meantime, if you have a specific urgent reason for needing a manual fix, you should PM Martin and he will try to fit it in. Examples of a special reason might be:

I want to offer an item for sale and I can't do it because my posts are set to zero
......etc
.....etc

In general, try to avoid bothering Martin with questions and issues which can wait for the next two weeks. If you want to know what's happening, read this sticky which will be updated whenever there is something important to report.

Latest News:

I now have a "repaired members file - I'll test it on the temp forum this week....

Regards,
 Martin & Co.

Due to the loss of part of the members list there were lots of "Sales" items with no contact information.
I have removed these.
Please feel free to repost any ads under your new name and if your new name doesn't have the prerequisite number of posts just contact a moderator.

Title: My posts gone astray?
Post by: Nordlys on March 30, 2012, 08:58:23 am
Hello Martin,
I have now got back onto the site after the glitch - but my posts under my original user name have been assigned to U-33.
This is very odd?
What has happened to me??
I re- registered with different user name thinking that my old details would not be accepted - am I mistaken here?
Regards......

Try re-registering under your old name first - assuming that you want to keep it....
Title: Re: My posts gone astray?
Post by: Nordlys on March 30, 2012, 09:18:14 am
I tried that straightaway - in fact I tried that again this morning but it just says incorrect password (which I know is Correct!)
So I re-registered with new name just to get back onto the site.
Lost all my postings tally......
Title: Re: My posts gone astray?
Post by: Tug-Kenny RIP on March 30, 2012, 10:39:26 am

It would help us if we knew your OLD NAME

If this won't register then the current advice is to put the number 2 next to your old name and register.

That way we can assimilate them and link them together.

Hi... Since the meltdown the posts appear backwards... the first post in a topic is at the bottom and the last post is at the top (err, if you see what I mean!) How do you make it view the other way round? I like opening a topic and seeing the first post first!

checkout 'look and layout preferences' in your profile
Title: Re: Topics posting upside down
Post by: Mad_Mike on April 02, 2012, 03:57:05 pm
click the profile tab at the top just under the search bar.

it will then bring you to your profile page. down the left hand side click the link that says look and layout preferences

you should see a tick box check list go down the bottom and untick show most recent posts at top

scroff down further and click change profile to save the settigs

Hi Dave - the mention of getting your new workshop up and running
has stirred me into motion (well slow motion anyway) - I'm off to the
shed I'm converting for models - it sort of ground to a halt due to the
cold weather and my general tendency towards idleness.

Post up some pics of your new workshop with the Prinz Eugen.

If using chrome as your browser, on the top line of the page, at the right, there is a spanner.  Next to that is a star.  Click the star.  From the list that drops down, pick a spot to save it, click "done".
If using IE, top left is a button marked "favourites".  Click that and proceed from there.

I know we all get to a point where the last straw gets to you
I know I've been there.

it is a shame that this site has lost a member, every one of use are special in our own ways and we (i know I do) learn and can teach to others and from others about the many many different ways to enjoy our hobby (or careers)
I am using my old name and even all my old settings, even so I have to resign myself to the fact that past posts and PM may never be open to me (in my case not such a great loss) it however does mean that if I want to remind myself of an item which in my brain I know happened then that link is missing (and before you say anything capt jack) yes there are a few dead cells in between my ears  :D

I think that Martin and all the others involved in the rebuild of the site are doing their very best without causing too much of an inconvenience to us modelers out here

Well done to Martin and the other unsung hero's

I am a regular visitor and poster here. I came to visit the other day and site was down. Came back tonight and I did not exist. Username not valid and had to re register. Used same username but all posts I had made have me down as guest. I want to return back to my original statis. I will delete my latest registration after this post and await admin to email me with news of my reinstatement as old kiwi96. Will watch posts as guest and asee what happens.
Cheers,
Adrian aka kiwi96.

Most of us are in the same boat (pun intended)
Kiwi96
We are all waiting patiently (most of us anyway)
to see if Martin can restore the old system
The main problem as I see it is that a restore to before
the meltdown would mean losing everything posted since.
Martin and his helpers are doing all they can so just re register
and wait for future developments.

I'm not sure why there is such a fuss about the post count.... this to me is a badge of shame  :embarrassed:... It  shows how much time I spend on the forum and how many stupid questions I must have asked lol  {-)

Is it such a big deal that your posts are no longer attributed to you? the information is still there for others to see.  I'm sure thats the most important thing.

Let's give Martin and co a break and let them get on with the important stuff

Badge of shame and stupid questions to you maybe, to others, how long they have spent on the forum helping others.
:-))

Just to add my thoughts - I do post very occasionally, specifically on vintage subjects (which I know a little about) when I feel that I've something positive to add that'll help others.

As I suggested in a response to an email from Martin last week - the reinstatement of the site back to it's original form prior to the crash, if that's at all possible, would be a far preferable solution imho.

"There was a wealth of information built up over many years that would, potentially, be lost otherwise & it'd also mean that those who haven't rejoined would, I assume, be automatically reinstated.

Contrast that with the loss of a few weeks posts and a much depleted membership - I'd have though it makes sense to reset everything...."

I fully appreciate all the hard work that Martin puts in, especially over these past few weeks, in trying to resolve the issues & one of the reasons that I'd held off rejoining was because I could see the potential for duplicate user name problems in reinstating old accounts.

"I'm still talking to the host company to work out what's going on but they are still being less than helpful.."
. - Martin

If this is the case then can I suggest that you consider moving the hosting?  We had huge issues with 1&1 as a hosting company (I appreciate that you're not with them) & eventually switched to United Hosting who are incredibly helpful, have servers based in the UK & go out of their way to ensure that everything runs smoothly... Incidentally - I have absolutely no association with them other than being a very satisfied customer  :-))

Thank you for a great forum & good luck!

Mark

Mark,

Under topic "forum news etc", a similar comment, namely, switch back recover all data etc and lose all recent posts, was suggested.

It would seem that this is preferable to many in the main.

However, I do not recall it being said that this is possible but if it is, maybe we should seriously consider it.

True and I dont disagree with you on that... the comment was made firmly tongue in cheek but other than the 25 posts in order to sell in the classifieds, does the post count actually mean anything at all?

As i suggested in a response to an email from Martin last week - the reinstatement of the site back to it's original form prior to the crash, if that's at all possible, would be a far preferable solution imho.

I don't think thats possible as Martin was saying earlier that the backups had not been backing up.

As for the Hosting change... I have been in communication with Martin re hosting here in Finland through the company I work for.  One advantage of which is that the hosting guys are within coffee cup throwing distance of my desk :D and the servers are physically downstairs

Hi - My thoughts were based upon comments Martin had mentioned in an email to me last week, namely:

"Merging the old and new accounts is proving really difficult and the latest suggestion involves loosing all the connections to all the posts that have rejoined....."

If that is the case then it would seem the preferable solution imho.

It isn't the posting numbers I missed (though Martin kindly fixed that without my asking), it is the links to everything I was looking
at and also the PM's that I saved for various reasons. I can still search for my old posts by searching for 'mckenzig' but can't for other
peoples posts as I found out when I sent Hama a PM regarding an old post. He replied that it wasn't his........ and 'WoW look at all this
stuff under my name' (Hama's I mean).

I think Martin has done everything possible and maybe we need to just move on and accept that old posts might be under the wrong names;
at least they are all still there to be read.

the cake is a lie is a line from the puzzle game 'portal'
you complete the tests to get your promiced 'cake' at the end of the game
unfortunatly the tester ( an out of control computer ) betrays and tries to kill you
so there is no cake
hence the message in hidden rooms all through the game telling you the cake is a lie :)

Good afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Sorry I've I've not updated everyone recently but the coffee and caffeine are not as effective after 2 or 3 gallons, some evening I
look at the options for fixing the forum and just stare at the screen blankly for a couple of hours while watching Mythbusters, they
really do have some budget for that show!

My next scheme is to create a blank forum using the new version on the forum s/w, and reinstate a backup until I find one that actually
works. The main issue being that I've been using the forum backup system for years, reassured in the fact that was the best option
only to find out it's actually a bit 'rubbish'!  In fact the real preferred option (PHPMYADMIN) isn't much better in that the only real way to
test a full backup is to restore it somewhere else and see if it works?!?!?

If that does work, I'll see if I can restore the membership / logons and see how much will be lost. There may well be a way of merging
the recent post onto the resorted Forum but that a job for someone with unlimited resources, an offshore software company or an
infinite number of monkeys capable of writing all the works of Shakespeare!

Anyway, that's what I'll be doing this weekend.....

Is it such a big deal that your posts are no longer attributed to you? the information is still there for others to see.  I'm sure thats the most important thing.

Yes that my thinking too. Actually, I couldn't believe my luck when the Forum wobbled back to it's feet and all the posts were there, especially the pictures. I did a quick lap of honour round that back garden that night I can tell ya!!!

I've been told that I'm looking drawn and a little recently.... and for a black guy, that's not to good.   {-)

Keep posting the funnies, they do cheer me up!

Cheerio 'My Precious!'

HAHAHAHahahahahaha...... ( Maniacal laughter. Exit stage right. Fade to black.... )

Don't know that the traffic/extra traffic reason holds up.

My difficulties, I am in Australia, seem worse when your side of the world is out to it.

The host should be able to provide numbers when and at what times peak loads are achieved and they can be matched up with the glitches.

Could be the host slows/shapes the site or such "out of hours"???????????????????

Just got worse very slow to post this then got a 504 and had to log back in.

Checked site figures 93 guests and 29 users? less than at normal times.???????????

Title: Re: The Great Mayhem Meltdown of 2012

The frequency of the 504 errors is not going to be entirely based on the number of users concurrently on the site, but also on what it is that they are doing.
From what I can tell (and with the help of a little Googling) the 504 error is reported by the Nginex webserver not getting a response back from the PHP-based forum software within a certain time. There could be a number of reasons for this... While the "spec" of the server (RAM, CPU etc) do have an effect on this, the architecture of the underlying software can mean that having multiple CPU's might just result in having any additional CPU's sitting idle, and if heaps of RAM is available, only that RAM up to a certain limit is actually used.

While I find the occasional 504 error annoying, I think we should remember how bad it was when the forum went away entirely... Lets face it - we can all log in, we can all post, we can all respond, we can all enjoy our hobby - Martin's doing a great job.

I have been in the situation where the failure of an IT system that I was responsible for took down an entire business and believe me it's not fun (and we have way more than the number of users this forum does to worry about), so I feel for Martin very deeply and I'm absolutely certain it will come right in the end.

Please bear in mind there are frequently over 100 users accessing this forum, which is a heck of a lot more than many others I read, with most accessing searching and dowloading content.

OK, occassionaly I get a 504 time out.  I get on with something else for 1/4 hour then try again.  Invariably it then opens up fine.

When posting sometimes it goes 504 during the post upload, however almost every time the post does come though.
Suggestion:  If writing more than a two or three sentances I compose in Word which has a better spell checker, then copy paste into the reply box.  I leave the temporary Word document open until I can see it's gone through, just in case.

No big deal.  I am just so grateful that Mayhem is back up and running after the meltdown.

Please bear in mind there are frequently over 100 users accessing this forum, which is a heck of a lot more than many others I read, with most accessing searching and dowloading content.

In my experience, 100 users is a very small number indeed ! On one forum for another interest I pursue , there are normally between 5,000 to 10,000 users on the site and it has peaked at over 12,000. For a small UK site dealing in a particular niche aspect of the same interest, there is normally five hundred on line at any one time, peaking at just under a thousand, without any problems.

There is obviously something amiss at the server end and I feel really sorry for Martin and those others helping, trying to sort all this out, as it must be highly frustrating and also very time consuming for all involved.

I know that I, like everyone else, am very grateful for the time effort and dedication put into it all as I really missed the site when it was down for a while but as we all know these 504 errors are a daily occurrence now, I'm sure Martin's blood pressure in particular will improve no end when it's sorted and he'll love being able to get out in the fresh air occasionally again.  O0

Even if Mayhem got to the state of the Ohio from the Pedestal convoy
I'd be almost as happy as Malta was in 1942 to see it still afloat ...........
with Martin and the tech's acting as the destroyers and tugs alongside it.

I believe you Ned, no need to google, if Martin would be so kind to return it to its rightful owner, Thanks again Ned. Mick B.
