Title: U505 Chicago
Post by: 2051476 on March 29, 2012, 05:25:44 pm
Went to Chicago this week and visited the U 505 with the Grand-kids who were not to happy in the inside during the demonstration tour. One wanted to know if there were any ghosts on board.

Very nice!
I live  near Barrow-in-Furness in the UK...where we build our nuclear subs. Barrow has a "dock museum" which is just crying out for something like the sub you have there...even a mock up would be better than the nothing they have now.

That one wasn't built in Barrow, I know! Perhaps they should raise Holland 5 and preserve it there like Holland 1 at Gosport. Or maybe raise Resurgam, although that was built a bit further down the road at Birkenhead.

I too live near Barrow and the Dock Museum is suffering from the cuts like the rest of the country. When last I heard the museum was going to be closed during the winter to save money. Shame because it is quite a good little museum.

There have been several attempts to get a sub on display there but the funds have never been forthcoming.

I would like like to think that a sub would be a great draw for the public but I am a bit biased!

Thank goodness that the RNSM keeps going even though it is never exactly flush with visitors.

What happened to the U-boat that they had up there...U-534? Last I heard it had been cut into three sections for H&S reasons?

Replica of Resurgam, close to the Woodside terminal of the Mersey Ferry in Birkenhead.

Indeed. Why leave it on the bottom to be scavenged by illegal divers? Resurgam was a vessel of modest dimensions, and lies at a shallow depth. I expect it boils down to hard cash. AFAIK, the only reason U534 got raised was because they thought it was stuffed with gold.

U534 is at Birkenhead not Barrow, its on display near the ferry port in 3 sections with a small museum next to it with some of the salvaged stuff found inside.

I was lucky enough to visit the Chicago Museum a few years back and you have to hand it to them, they certainly know a thing or two about putting on a display and begger all about history.  The sub is displayed in a purpose built hall which leads you through the story of the Battle of the Atlantic.  In all the text panels describing events, equipment and conditions the words"Royal Navy" appears once!  "British Merchant Service" doesn't appear at all.

I'm happy to say that I am building a www.scaleshipyard.com U-505 in 1/48th scale.
I will be making a pilgrimage to the Chicago Museum for a more detailed build.
Kind regards,
Giovanni

What is happening with HMS Onyx, she was moved to Barrow when Peel Holdings killed off the Historic Warships Museum, I saw her alongside in Barrow last year looking very sorry for herself.  I thought she was to be opened to the public, but this appears not to have happened. :(( :((

Last I saw, she was still sitting in the dock at BAe. Certainly not accessible....even from the outside.

Just an update on HM (S) Onyx on this thread.

The guys at Furness MBC tell me that Onyx has already been moved to an East coast port to be scrapped.

Sad but very difficult for somewhere like Barrow in Furness to support this kind of visitor attraction.

If you want to see an Oberon class sub. you had better come Downunder.
From wiki:-
Australia's six Oberons have been preserved and are on display, either completely or partially. HMAS Ovens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Ovens) is located at the Western Australian Maritime Museum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Australian_Maritime_Museum) at Fremantle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremantle,_Western_Australia), while HMAS Onslow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Onslow) is located at the Australian National Maritime Museum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_National_Maritime_Museum) in Darling Harbour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darling_Harbour), Sydney. The fin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fin_%28submarine%29), outer hull, and stern section of HMAS Otway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Otway_%28S_59%29) are preserved on land at Holbrook, New South Wales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holbrook,_New_South_Wales). HMAS Otama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Otama) is located at Westernport Bay, Victoria, where she has been awaiting conversion into a museum vessel since 2000; a lack of funding and cooperation from local and state governments means that the volunteer group hoping to preserve Otama attempted to sell the submarine on eBay but to no avail. (They are still hoping to put her on display at Hastings, Westernport) HMAS Oxley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Oxley_%28S_57%29)'s fin stands as a permanent memorial at HMAS Stirling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Stirling), Garden Island, Western Australia. HMAS Orion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Orion)'s fin stands as a permanent memorial at Rockingham Naval Memorial Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockingham_Naval_Memorial_Park) in Western Australia.

Oh wow, I'd love to go to Chicago just to see her. The Germans called her the "the Hanger queen" she was almost sunk by an air attack and never seemed to have any luck after that date, always returning to France with Mechanical problems. On one occasion her skipper cracked during a depth charge attack and shot himself. She had been a successful boat up until then and sank a few ships including a liberty ship.
