It's not an epidemic, just that these things are now flavour of the month and getting reported more often. Ships are always breaking down, just like their model counterparts.

At least when the engines stop the ship just sits there, whereas if you are on a plane.... :o

4...there was a collision between a ferry and a cargo ship in belast not long ago...
