If you want a better idea of the displacement weight of the new tug while it is a bare hull.
Just put the hull on the scales and fill her up with water to the waterline.
Or
measure the amount of water used to fill to waterline.
1 x gallon fresh water weighs 10 lbs, 1 x pint weighs 1.25 lbs.

hey Bigford  nice boat , if you want you could try celulose spray putty primer available from car shops ,i have some and i think its great for covering grain it brushes on well although i think its made realy for spraying hence the name .i used it on my wheelhouse on the crane barge with a coat of varnish and it looks ok.

Hi,
I built an Artesania "Amsterdam" about 3 years ago as my first model boat, having "crossed over" from RC aircraft. There are 6 other "Amsterdams" in our club as well as mine, so we have quite a fleet of them, and no 2 are painted the same. Mine must be boring as it is the same colour as on the box art. Some photos attached.

Hi bigford,
Thanks for your comments. Keep at it with your Amsterdam, they are a very good model and worth the effort, it produces a very tug-like bow wave when under way too. I replaced the plastic prop in the kit with a brass one of similar size, I was advised to do this because the model is rather heavy (I added 7.5kg - about 16lbs of lead to bring her down to the waterline) and the plastic prop could flex under load. The motor drives the prop shaft through a home made reduction drive of pulleys and 2 belts from neoprene O-rings. It is a very quiet method of reduction, as opposed to gears, which can be quite noisy. I look forward to some photos of the finished article.
Best wishes,
Peter.

Hi Peterfitness, just a quick point about o rings as belts. Because of the way they are moulded they have a cold shut point which is where the material meets in the mould and this is where they will break after some hours flexing around pulleys. It is possible to get belts that look the same as orings which do not have this feature as they are made in a different way. We use such things in my company as we learnt the hard way about orings. So if you can tell me a size I might be able to find a couple. Cheers Grahm. :)

Hi Captain Povey,
I know about the problem with o-rings, but after more than 3 years of running I have not had a breakage - touch wood. I do have some proper little belts as well, but so far so good with the o-rings, perhaps because they are not under great tension, and are being used in relatively slow models.
All the same, thanks for the feed back, I appreciate it.
Peter.

looking for a brass prop and kort for the tug ????!?!?!? ;D
after goofing up  my rudder  it was moved back a little to far
seeing is how the kit build leaves a large gap between the prop and rudder
this should not be a problem right??
rudder should be further to the left of the prop.   also there is no rod at the bottom of
the rudder

Hi guys . Ive got one of those. HAD TO MODIFY THE SUPERSTRUCTURE fitting to the deck, the six little tabs and slots in the deck dont really work that well and there is no coaming round the deck opening to keep excess water out.  As supplied the rudder does absolutely naff all in reverse, so modifying to a kort is probably a good idea.  Its getting on a bit now and the stanchions round the decks are very brittle and break at the base very easily so might be time for a rebuild............                             regards ....         bob......

guys BIG  problem during the early building of this bug tug i switched sanding
sealers one brand on the front wood and superstructure and one brand on
the back deck.
now the front and superstructure are primed and painted with
dupli-color gray filler primer,looks great!!!
Now the wood for the rear deck was sanded and cleaned and primed with the
same primer and now the paint is crinkling, i was able to scrap off sheets of
3 day old paint.
i e-mailed a.l. for replacement parts but can i fix what i have???

Hi ..in the motor trade we used to use a product called primaseal.....wonderful stuff . i think it is wood alcohol based but i could be wrong....anyway if you clean and rub down all the affected areas and then put on primaseal , as long as you dont rub through the stuff , it will stop any reaction between whats under it and what you put on top of it.....by the way ..........love the pics of the naval tugs...looks like i might have found what to refit my amsterdam to !

                               good luck and best wishes

Just got mine in today O0 . Can't wait to start this over the winter months.  Ordered mine from RC Scale Model on Thursday of last week, received it in three business days.  Bigford, I'll be watching to see how you do with yours and taking any and all tips from all of you that have had experience with this one.

Wife asked me if this was my Christmas present to myself  ??? .  Guess I haven't told her about me wanting another for Christmas ;)

mine is no where near ready to hit the water but i can tell you she will

Hi bigford......from experience gained sailing my amsterdam , you are spot an with the top weight , but it takes loads of ballast to bring her down to her marks so top weight is not such a problem .  The standard barn door rudder , if thats what you ars using , does absolutely squat in reverse ..nothing..nada , so i am going to change to a kort in the refit......

                looking good !!! O0 O0

I have not found my Amsterdam to be top heavy. As djrobbo says, so much ballast has to be added to bring her down to the waterline, the the weight of the upper works becomes a non issue. He is also spot on about the effectiveness - or lack thereof, of the rudder in reverse, and the fitting of a kort is recommended. I haven't fitted one (yet), but of the 7 Amsterdams in our club, only one has a kort, and it is far more manoeuverable in reverse than the others. That particular one was alxo fitted with a bow thruster which helps too.
Peter.

it fits with a peice of match book thickness

Hi bigford....youll have to let us know how effective that shroud is when in reverse......as peter says i think a steerable kort , with perhaps assistance from bow thrusters is the way to go..

may the force be with you !!

Hy Bigford,
How did that new bow section work out, I think I have the same model, or very similiar, that I picked up off e,bay,  the one I have is a wooden build that has been glassed it has a massive bow, I was thinking of redoing the build and like your bow idea.
Cheers
Bosun
Will sort out and post a few pics

I've attached a couple of shots of the prototype Amsterdam plus a couple of my own model of same. Thought they may be of help to those wondering what the full size vessel looks like.

Thanks very much. It took quite a while to come up with the correct colour scheme for her. It seems photos of the prototype are few and far between. Fortunately Weisjmuller were helpful.
