Went to the viewing of a local auction this afternoon, mainly because the other half is interested. However quite a few of the lots must have belonged to a marine engineer as there were lots of boxes of books on ships, merchant and military, and one box of marine modelling books, including an old Vic Smeed book. There were two 'professional' models and a box of photos, (several hundred) all of different ships. For a change I was the one being dragged away.

What were the professional models of !

One was complete and in a glass case and was of the SS Malabar, (think I have the spelling right). The other was not complete but was interesting from being able to see how the hull had been constructed. Unfortunately I cannot recall the name of that one.

The two models were sold for £200 and £440 respectively. The first one as I said was incomplete, (about 5 to 6 feet long) whilst the second was the SS Malabar a liberty boat of about 7500 tons, (about 4 feet long). The photos attched are from my phone and of low resolution.

£400 seems a lot for what seems to be an out of proportion Liberty ship. The box of photos sounded interesting though. BY.

I do not have a marine background and cannot comment on the 'correctness' my focus is mainly on the modelling aspects and as such it was a good build and was complete with glass display cabinet. To me the £200 for the first model seemed high as there, was no glass cabinet and there would be a lot of work required to restore and finish it.
Even I found the box of photos interesting but anyone with a interest in collecting photos of ships it would have been, in my opinoin, a real treasure trove. I did not see what that box went for but the box of modelling books, (approx 6 in number), went for £28.

Ah, the perils of auctioning. The buyer gets a good deal and the seller feels disgruntled. Sad really. BY.
