Not sure if people outside the UK can view this clip on the BBC site. Shows Ocean going up the Thames and the stern getting very close to one of the pontoons of the barrage! Looks like they nearly needed a new coat of paint!

I'm sure there was breathing room, but even so I think the stern tug could have reacted quicker as Ocean neared the pier to starboard. She may have been blind to the situation but someone should have told her!
And why did the BBC keep describing Ocean as the 'navy's largest ship'. Have they not heard of Illustrious? There's not that much in it, but Lusty is bigger than the Big O.

I gutted as I was working at Tate Lyle today and missed her.

Is Lusty still in commission!? I thought all the Invincible class were out of service?

She missed, thats the main thing. The stern tug is mainly to cause drag to keep her straight
I have looked at the vidio a few times and it seems to me that the bow tugs took too much of a pull to port, thus making her stern cant to starboard, which the stern tug had no time to correct, even if advised. I understand from meteo that there was quite a cross wind, so really it was a well executed passage.

Works in Oz,
Yes the rear tug was working hard bit close for comfort

This page would indicate that she is still in service, albeit running up to operational readiness. http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/The-Fleet/Ships/Assault-Ships/HMS-Illustrious
A 'well executed passage', yorkiej? Only just - a few feet more and we'd have been talking about major embarrassment, HMS Ocean and the Thames barrier both being out of commission, millions of pounds needed for repairs, resignations and court-martials!
We're lucky, she made it. I'll bet they make sure she has more clearance on the way down river, though! ok2

I think HMS Ocean claims the crown as the biggest cos she is the heaviest, time for a bit of a diet for the old girl?

Hello
As I said about this in another forum the HMS Ocean is officialy the largest ship of the Royal Navy as seen here http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/The-Fleet/Ships/Assault-Ships/HMS-Ocean
Until the arrival of the Queen Elizabeth class carriers, HMS Ocean is the largest warship in the Navy’s surface fleet.
I've never checked it before but I just remember a plate I've seen when I've been onbard the HMS Ocean where it was officialy written "largest Royal Navy ship"
Then following Janes Ocean is heavier
Illustrious : 16850 t standard - 20600 full load
Ocean : 18000 t Standard - 21600 full load
Her hull is also larger and deeper when looking at water line as over all size for aircraft carrier means nothing with so many protrusions
Illustrious : 192.8 x 27.50 meters - Draft 6.4 (8.80 for sonar - 7.6 looks to be propeller draft)
Ocean : 193 (hum only 0.20 meters more x 28.50 and draft 6.60
Illustrious is larger only for two data : over all length 209.10 (Illustrious) versus 203.40 (ocean) - over all beam 36 (Illustrious) - 34.40 (Ocean)

And as I replied on that Forum, Jane says one thing but that same official MOD/RN site you link to says this:
Ocean: 203.4m length x 35m beam x 6.5m draft. Displacement 21500 tons
Illustrious: 210m length x 36m beam x 7.6m draft. Displacement 22000 tons.
Curious. Both well trusted sources that disagree.

If you read correctly there is explanation about the difference of sizes as the MOD/RN give only over all. Same about draft as the Janes give 3 different ones for Illustrious : Sonar - Propellers and Hull.
The Ocean have only one draft as no sonar and no deeper propellers than hull.
About the displacement, I also have info from the French Combat Fleet of the Word if it's quite different from the Janes (some tons disapeared) the Ocean is still heavier on standard and full load - size of hull are same as Janes.
From my side I'm trusting more these books as from real specialist, I suspect the MOD/RN site is built by communication contractors and the problem with internet is the copy and paste... Even the mistake.

It's not really worth arguing about, I suppose, my friend! I wonder who supplies the info to Janes though, presumably the same MOD that puts different info on its own pages. {-)
But if you moored them side by side, which would be the 'largest', I wonder? And which crew would shout the loudest about it? Alas, with our tiny navy, I don't suppose we'll get a chance to find out. :((
I have a similar issue with my late father's tug Meeching. Lloyds Register says 173 GRT, the builders plans and info say 153 GRT and our Musuem has a book that says 163 GRT. Well, at least the 1 and the 3 must be correct.

Anyway if you prefer the Illustrious as Largest ... up to you !
Coming back to the first question about BBC who didn't hear about Illustrious, they didn't check the data, they just follow the MOD who said that Ocean is the largest RN ship ! If there is a mess in the RN data, the fault is not coming from BBC !

Haven't you all noticed the biggest ship as far as MoD is concerned is usually the one that is currently in commission - when they are in for a
refit they suddenly get smaller until they are back in commission again

Had it been the lusterous, perhaps the 6.6Mtr extra lengh would have been enough to cause a bonk? {-)
Regards Ian.

Illustrious probably qualifies as tallest, while Ocean qualifies as ugliest...mind you, have you seen a Type 45 from the side, designed by lego!
