Title: Blasted computers again.
Post by: Bryan Young on May 06, 2012, 03:25:36 pm
Can anyone advise me on a nice, simple, easy to use CD writer to replace the glitch prone thing that's part of Windows XP?
I use Nero for copying discs, that's OK. But getting "stuff from the "C" drive to a CD has gone haywire. Sixteen minutes of transfer with all the lights and bars apparently working well....and at the last moment comes "Windows Cannot Complete This Task".
This is costing me a small fortune in discarded discs.
Cheers. Bryan.

One thought, have you considered using an optical drive cleaner to clean the lens?   I solved a similar problem on my computer that way.

Mike. Yes, Ive used a cleaner on both drives. But as I said, copying discs from one drive to another is no problem.
The original burned disc always works on the drive it was made on...but the computer won't recognize the disc when it's in the "Read only" drive. Which makes it a bit pointless really. At my wits end at the moment! Thanks for your reply. BY.

Essex......Thanks for that. I'll give it a swing and see what happens....if that doesn't do the job then the computator is off to the local shop at £35 per session. BY.

At £35 a go, no doubt plus parts, if any, this suddenly looks good - http://www.saverstore.com/product/20035888/Lite-On-IHAS124-19-LiteOn-24x-Internal--DVDRW-Black-Bare-SATA-Optical-Drive
If both drives are misbehaving, they might both have suffered the same contamination.  But try the new program first.

I use the free DeepBurner package - http://www.deepburner.com/ (http://www.deepburner.com/)

Works well for me - never had a problem - lots of good features - and the free price is good...

Hi Essex,

Microsoft Security Essentials?????????????????? I think, which replaced Microsoft defender.

It tells me that site is linked to virus sites and to report the site.
Also allows option to continue with download but strongly recommends against it and to cease the download.

So not being computer literate didn't take the risk.

Also run free version of AVG but 'Microsoft warning' jumped in before download started.

Problem appears to be sorted. The fault would seem to lie within the drop-down menu ....the line that says "send to" etc.
No.1 son came around (with a card and a hello on my 72nd birthday....yikes. Where did the time go), and used the "right click" and drag method and all went well. At least it did when he did it. Cheers. BY.
