Title: SOMETHING VERY NEW Wildcat 53 windfarm support boat
Post by: debssnal on May 07, 2012, 11:19:24 pm
Hi,I have just got my Wildcat 53 from Andy at Models By Design.
This is his newest boat and later this year Andy will be selling it as a kit.
It comes as a jetdrive or prop drive.
I am doing the wildcat as a jetdrive. (Island Tiger )
I have got the 40mm jetdrive units from KMB.
I will be running the jets on 2x 5045 900kv 1400watt brushless motors from giantcod.
here are some pictures of the the hull, top and running gear.
There is also some links to video's of Andys   enjoy
kind regards
Alan

Every so often you come across a model that just looks 'right' to your own eyes, and this one definitely sets me off.  It rides so beautifully with those waterjets.

Hi everyone,
Today i have fitted the all the runing gear and steering gear.
I also have the reversing buckets working.
I have tested it all as well.
All shafts i drill when fixing pulleys with grub screws.
As i have found when you use a flat on the shafts they can work lose.
I always solder all electrical connections and use gold connectors.
Here are some pictures of today work

Title: Re: SOMETHING VERY NEW Wildcat 53 windfarm support boat(TEST DAY)
Post by: debssnal on June 17, 2012, 10:25:59 pm
Hi,i have had two trips to the lake today.
I have had both boats on the water.
The jet drive boat goes along at 10.6 knotts on 11.1volt.
The prop drive does 9.6 knotts on 11.1volts
I am very happy on the performance.
I have the hiabs to make next.
The hiabs i have got from MAC'S MOULDINGS
Well here are some links to video's of the boats today

Very nice layout, and very tidy wiring.
On thing that concerns me is heat.  Brushless outrunners do generate a fair bit of heat and once the superstructure is in place will there be enough cool airflow?
Title: Re: SOMETHING VERY NEW Wildcat 53 windfarm support boat
Post by: debssnal on June 18, 2012, 04:02:42 pm
Thank you for your concern about the motors geting hot.
Brushless outrunners are design to run up to 98% effecient.
So if you dont over load then they run cold.
Both boats run cold at full power.
Because of this i get very long running times.
I have found that most people who use brushless motor alway go for high kv.
As there train thought, big prop fast motor fast boat.
This is so wrong.
All you are doing is heating up air,and wasting power.
Eg,100watt condescent light bulb 10%effecient,10watts of light 90watts of heat.
As you know they get very hot.
kind regards
Alan

So does that mean the Type 45 is also trying for the record too or just the Wildcat?
Title: Re: SOMETHING VERY NEW Wildcat 53 windfarm support boat
Post by: debssnal on July 03, 2012, 05:49:15 pm
Just the widecat for this record.
I have two record i can go for with the Type 45.
Because of the weight and amount of batteries i would need to run the Type45 on 24volt.
Its inpractical to use the Type45 for this record.
The Type45 was design to run on 36volts and not 24volts.
I am not redesign the runing and motor set up as it works so well on 36volts.
So not he end of the Type45.
I will be making it into a multi fuctioning model with lots working on it

Hi,Did some more testing tonight.
Good out come, and very happy with the boat.
Back on the 60mm props.
Runs best on these props.
Speed and battery life.
She is cruising at 7.5 knotts.
Looking good for the record.

Really nice boat Alan. Hope you enjoy sailing her as much as I enjoy sailing my MBD Trawler-cat.
Mine runs for hours ( never flattened the batteries yet ), on 2 - 6v 10 ahr jelly cells.
Wired to give 12v, powering 2 Graupner 900s pushing 70mm 4blade brass props.
She is very impressive in the water. Even at full power she can virtually turn her on her own axis
without listing over, she sticks to the water like glue.
I use 1 motor on each stick, forwarding one / reversing the other, brilliant.

All the lipo's are charged up,and some big lead acid batteries are cooking.
The prop shafts are oiled, and the boat is clean.
Debbie's cake making.
Looks like all us men are going to be well looked after this weekend.
My Debbie has made her famous cakes (just think what you guys are missing out on),
Andy's,Debbie is making bacon rolls and burgers and Paul's wife Cathy is making sausage rolls and has brought scotch eggs, nibbles etc ..
and also she is on fish and chip run in the evening.

Hi everyone,
I am sorry to say that we didn't make it.
Unfortunately from around 7pm onwards there was just large lumps of weed and debris floating
down the lake, the props failed up with reeds and other organic material.
In the end something had to break.
At about 7.30pm one of the couplings stripped out and we brought the boat in, disconnected the motor
and because we had so much power in the motors we tried to complete the record on the remiaining motor.
Running on one motor we only lost about 1.5 knotts so if we could have kept her running we could of still
broken the record.
Unfortunately around 8pm the second propshaft got jammed up with floating reeds and again we sheared a coupling.
We got the boat back to the bank, obviously the record attempt had stopped at that point.
Andy then suggested that we tried his boat this would mean starting the record from the begining again, so we tried the boat
out and had it running at just over 11 knotts. So we worked out we could break the record in just over 12 hours so we started again and
went for it. 15 minutes into the second record attempt we had an electrical problem, so once again the record had to be stopped.
We recovered the boat and because of the number of different electrical set ups we could run, within 10 minutes we had started the record
again for the third time. The boat was running well but unfortunately floating reeds, plastic bags etc .. it just kept hitting them and this
started to drag the boat down. 35 minutes into this one of the battery bank alarms went off, we got the boat back in ready to change the batteries
but on checking the boat there was so much rubbish around the props and one of the motors had got very hot.
At this point we decided it was not worth breaking expensive material. The debris on the water was just getting heavier.
At 10.00pm we had to call it a day.
I will let you know the total mileage we covered tomorrow evening as this is an answer to a competition we are running.
Well Mayhemers we have not been defeated watch this space for the re-match.
Myself and Andy will be attempting this record again very soon.
All that is left is to thank everyone whose has helped us today and come and supported us and thankyou to all you Mayhemers for all of your support
on this website.

kindest regards
Alan,Andy,Paul, the two Debbies, Cathy,Adam, Katy, and everybody who came down to the event.

Thankyou very much and goodnight.

Alan,

I was very sorry to hear that despite all your efforts you had to stop at that stage.  It certainly takes me back to 10 years ago and my first attempt at Bude when a rowing boat got mixed up with GLOUCESTER.  Weed fouling wasn't something I had to contend with but as the model T42 was much larger and in displacement mode it would probably have been less affected anyway.  I hope you can back on the water again soon while the weather is still favourable.

Post by: debssnal on July 22, 2012, 09:44:51 pm
Thank you,Dave,Francis,Dan,Ned,and all Mayhemers.
We did 66 miles before we stopped.
It was very hard on me,Andy, and the rest of the team.
Did we fail ? NO we did not.
We collected £60 for the RNLI,and that is going to Dungerness.
The Royal British legion Money we will count up later, and i would think it sould be arond the same amount.
As for the boat it will be back on the water tomorrow if i get time.
This is just the end of part one.
Part two follows very soon with us collecting even more money.
So everyone wins.....
kind regards
Alan

Very well done guys & galls 66 miles! you havent failed at all.
Multiply the miles by the scale of the boats, that is the real mileage I recon.
1/12  x  66 = 792 miles. well its worth a try. :-)) {-)
