i desperately want to start mine but unlike my revell type7 on the gato you have to cut away the top of the hull (where the deck fits over) with dave welch' unit so i have to wait until i get the unit to find out exactly how much and where i have to cut away. and the ive totalled up with all his options and it came to about £300 from memory so ill have to wait a bit longer ;D . have you seen aprils issue of tamiya model magazine international. theres a build review (non R/C of course)its superband he's done it in the colours i was goin to do it in, i keep looking at it itching to get started ;D

Dave Merriman is offering a Gato conversion kit that you may want to check out.

Hi all ,
I have just started to build my Gato as a surface runner only, just fancied doing something a bit different from the norm and i think this is a good big kit to have an experiment with, i have attached a couple of photos to show how i have converted the rudder and the holes i needed to cut to fit the shafts/motors, i have also took one with my son just to give and idea of the size to people that might be thinking of converting the Gato and there is still the fore secton to go on which is another 7 inches or so. Could be just the foto but your linkages look to be from piano wire? I would change to either snakes with plastic
snap links or chat to a local fabrication shop for one or two lengths of stainless steel welding wire.

They are stainless rods. O0

Got the chance to do a bit more building today with it raining all day! The Gato had to have a change of rudder because of a leak through the rudder apperture, twin MFA motors are now fitted and made a good start on the conning tower, tested the sub in the bath and no leaks thank goodness, i think it will need a fair bit of ballast to get it to its surface running line.
-
More or less finished the Gato, just needs the speed controller fitting and testing on the water.
-
Hi all, just starting to add a few decals and figures O0

That's a nice job Russell. Do you know what the weight will be to run at the waterline?
What's the chances of making one similar that could drop to periscope depth and come back up? I suppose it would be the same as making a full blown submarine but what's your opinion? Cap
-
Hmmm, nice job Russel. Can I ask what you used to connect teh motors to teh shafts, was it flexi couplings?? Also any update on how it ran?
-
Blimey thats an old thread!
The couplings i used were pieces of silicon fuel tubing as space was an issue....
Thanks

yeah sorry , just seen how old that was, but having just got a kit ( btw modelzone doing them for £29.99 now!) you came up on a google search.
Have you taken her out and run her, how did she fair?
One last question(honest) the bow section, being a sealed unit , how much ballast did you put in there?. My concern is taking a stab at teh ballast, sealing it up and finding its wrong!
Cheers
Rckt

To be honest she only went out a couple of times but ran well, needed a little more ballast and if i can remember rightly i place all the ballast in the mid section, cant remember putting anything in the bow?
Thanks

Very nearly got one myself today for a surface runner - £29.99 today in Chester.

She looks a bit light in the stern/ heavy in the bow.

That's just for photo etched parts, not a full model.

Great photos Gyronuts, isn't it a pity we haven't preserved more of our historic ships over here.

Finished my Schnellboote, so just bought one of these and going to convert to a R/C surface only runner.
Will be posting photo's of build as I go along.
Just need to get some batteries for my camera! :-) :-)

Hi
I built the Gato Revell 1/72 with R/C a few years ago using the Dave Welch kit .
I still have somewhere if I can find it? a folder with the C/Ds which came with the Dave Welch kit together with instructions etc. Should anyone wish to borrow it I can't see any infringement being done as the kit is not produced anymore in lending you the information as long as you promise not to copy it and also to return it to me within a couple of weeks.
Regards
Ian :-))

My favorite sub. This one has David Merriman's Sub-Driver in it. Nice part about his system is I can get to waterline after diving. As seen here:

This class of sub has a lot to hoist up out of the water.
Even as just a surface runner, it is a great looking sub. Look forward to your build!
