The heated oil based ones produce lots of smoke but take quite a bit of power to run.
Smoke pellets produce the most smoke but are quite short lived....

Beware of the "black" ones , it is more of a dark purple-ish colour.  Maybe mixing in some other colour might work, ie two pellets each different. Expensive way to experiment :((.  That pellet was a 90second one, I split them down the middle and put one half on top of the other. They have to be in a metal tube and away from plastic, they get very hot, dont forget it is a slow burning firework. :o

Marks Model Bits have been doing smoke generators for a while now. These use plain water and no heat.

Sadly there is no thing as a free lunch. With any unit more smoke means more power. There are pros and cons for both oil and water foggers. Personally i use water foggers. You can buy off E Bay tripple foggers. To be built into your own case etc. But they take three times the power, about two and a half amps 24v. John.

this is mine in my Orca, its home made, and is the hot oil type, inefficient, but works great :-))

then I modified it, to recreate the engine about to blow up :}

It`s a bit long winded,but here goes:- 1.a piece of 22mm copper tube(approx 1 1/2")
                                                      2.wick (1/2" x 1" strips)
                                                      3.oil (veg oil,car oil,3 in 1 oil)
                                                      4.box of matches/lighter

Drill holes in copper tube all over, soak wick in oil, drain excess oil off and set alight(adult supervision req).Singe one end,and when glowing blow flame out,put wick into copper tube(put copper tube  a 1/3 of the way into the  funnel)lasts about 20 mins(very effective)one last thing before i go,about 6 to 7 yrs ago i soaked the wick in breakfast oil,and when my tug was going round the course in a compitition you could smell the "breakfast" and people were saying i need either a bacon or sausage roll that`s making me hungry.costs peanuts to make (less than a fiver).baloo

Hi John, its a metal box (maplins), I use resistance wire, from an old hair dryer, you have to crimp the battery wires as you cant solder the wire, and insulate the box or wire where the wire goes in and comes out, the wire is coiled inside the box, loft insulation is stuffed inside the coil, and it then sits on a gauze shelf inside the box. The substance to be heated is poured into the exhaust, or funnel, this soaks the insulation, the wire heats up, the circuit is made from my transmitter, a switch on the tx operates a microswitch which makes the circuit. The fan on the front blows the smoke up the funnel/exhaust. It could be proportional via the motor speed, thats a project for another day.

Its trial and error on the bench how long the wire should be, depends how many volts the power source is, and the insulation needs to be very damp, not soaking or it will drown the wire, too dry, it could go on fire, although the insulatioon I have is flame retardant :embarrassed:

I have a mini mister which will be far safer and more efficient, but.. I cannot fit a water container in the boat as the mister needs s certain amount of water above it!

Dad made his smoker from a piece of tube and the wire came from an old heater matrix.

The smoke can be seen for miles and attracts the public to the lake.

It is fitted into his Imara and he used the plastic cover from the heater to make the grill that sits on the top of the stack.

I hope this give you some ideas.
Cheers
Lance

My experiment so far, only using paper. Cloth dipped in lamp oil should improve it a lot. It consist of a5/8 inch aluminium tube about 9inches long.  A 2 bladed aluminium propeller (home made) in a plastic shroud fixed on the end. The motor came from a electric toothbrush, runs on a AA cell. The whole lot weighs 4.5 oz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r75f1EVTL6A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r75f1EVTL6A)
