Title: Three Lions Growl, now let's see you ROAR
Post by: Shipmate60 on June 15, 2012, 09:59:58 pm
Just watched the England game, both agony and ecstasy.
Draw against France, win against Sweden, the first time we have beaten Sweden in competitive football.
England 1-0, 1-1, Sweden 2-1 England 2-2, 3-2.
Sitting on the edge of my seat.

Come on England!!

Bob it was an exciting if not a great game - I always thought there was something a bit suspect about anyone who doesn't like team games or animals
(that should get a few comments)

I find it rather amusing that those who claim to dislike football are the first to post  on a football thread.
But I don't really care. I enjoy football and will always support my national team.
I don't and wont apologise for supporting football.
We might not be the best in the world but no matter how far we go will always be proud of supporting them.
The same goes for Rugby and any other national team.
Yes I will be watching the England Ladies team playing against Sweden in the qualifiers for the women's European Championships.

Although I am not a fan of football (soccer variety) it is wonderful to see an England team win, especially in a dramatic come from behind victory.
Congratulations !!!!

Hmmmm, I wonder if the fact half the team were wearing pink boots influenced that

Good to see Walcott come on later though - soon scared the Swedish defenders with a bit of pace :-))

Now he just needs to remind Cashley Cole that he is the defender and Young is the winger >>:-(

Oh, and Wazza's back for the Ukraine game 8)

My feelings exactly, Bob, but in my case it's Australia. Rugby League or Union, football (soccer), hockey, cricket, basketball, netball, any team sport that is played in our national colours I'll support 100% O0

He has to,
I suppose he has to support someone.
And of course he will quickly swop allegiance to any country.
Typical of some Scots, thankfully most have better sense.

Pity about that though Wullie, in my loft I have an unmade Weisel with a full set of plans, but could I be bothered to find them and photocopy?
I think the Ukrane is a long way to post.

I have just finished watching 2 Rugby games, New Zealand All Blacks v Ireland, and the Australian Wallabies v Wales. Both New Zealand and Australia won, right on the bell in each case, and I have to say, even as a dedicated and one eyed Aussie supporter that neither team really deserved to win. Both Ireland and Wales were magnificent and definitely did not deserve to lose, especially Wales, who almost had their first win on Aussie soil since 1969. As their captain, Sam Warburton said after the match, "I am absolutely gutted", and he looked it. As an Aussie I'm glad the Wallabies won, and clinched the 3 test series, but I do feel for the men in red because, as I said earlier, they were magnificent.

In an uncanny parallel, the NZ v Ireland game was decided after a Dan Carter drop goal sealed the win for the All Blacks in the final minute of the game. The Irish were a vastly different side to that beaten conclusively last week, and should have won.

I await the result of the South Africa v England game later tonight, our time - surely that won't be such a cliff hanger...will it???

Peter.

Thats why come Wimbledon my mantra is ABM - anyone but Murray.

I remember being in HMS Neptune when Scotland played Peru in the 1978 world cup.  That was the one that Scotland proclaimed..........we’ll really shake them up, when we win the World Cup, ’cause Scotland are the greatest football team'.  Well I couldnt manage my last pint in the bar as my stomach was still sore from laughing when the third Peru goal went in. It doesnt get any better than that.............well apart from a few days later and the Iran match.  Stuff dreams are made of.  Even outweighed Costa Rica in Italia '90.

You are one of those from north of the border that really does deserve independence. Roll on the day!  >>:-( <*< <*< :police:

As for the rugby, Ireland were superb. A real shame they could not manage the win.

The England football was a good game, but I fear we will have to improve at the back and keep the ball better if we are to go much further...

I liked the English/Swedish game. Both teams looked a bit shaky at times. It was a pretty clean game with very little rolling on the field looking like they had just been shot, only to be up on their feet 30 seconds later when given a free kick. I had a lot of sympathy for Ireland as I watched the best team in the series, Spain come on & have a bit of practice @ their expense, hard to watch, Irish football has a long way to go, which is sad. The Croats seem to think that to get the ball is secondary after trying to get the player first. They need a bunch of red cards to stop that kind of play. My prediction is that Spain should win, they are poetry in motion.Overall very high skill level is being shown & nice to watch. Mick B.

Yes Bob the Germans seem to have a way of rising to the occasion, but I also saw them lose in the World Cup. Spain will be hard to beat & I can't figure out what is happening to the Dutch, there seems to be internal team problems, is there ?, Mick B.

I'm guessing that you will know by now that South Africa beat England again, so 3 southern hemisphere teams now hold a 2-0 advantage in the 3 test series over their northern hemisphere rivals :-))

Well thats Group B sorted.
No surprise that Germany going through winning all their games and Portugal as runners up.
I watched the Portugal / Netherlands game.
Although the Netherlands scored first they soon caved in and just didn't play as a team, they lost 2 - 1.
Ronaldo at last found his club form for his country and played well scoring both goals.
I was so surprised that the Netherlands just gave up even though they needed to win by 2 goals for any hope of qualifying.
Van Persie hasn't found his club form, Robben had a quiet game.
At the start of the tournament who would have thought the Netherlands "Nil Point"

Just looking forward to Tuesday evening, England / Sweden, get Rooney back and at his best.

Yes looking forward to Tuesday, win, draw or loose it should be a good match.  But I must admit I cant seem to get why as soon as the follically challenged comb over scouser has his ban ended he is automatically back in the team at the expense of one of the two goal scorers from the Sweden match?

If my memory serves me well, the last 8 competitive matches in Euro /World finals he has played for England he has been sent off twice, booked 4 times and not scored a goal.  His last but one competitive match in a final competition he thought that much of the England fans he abused them to the camera.  And lest we forget the reason he was banned was because he spat his dummy out and kicked an opponent from behind.   Yet we seem to think now he can play he must because he must score.  Based on his averages he wont score but will be either booked or sent off.

Frankly if Rooney was missing from the team sheet I wont be as bothered as much as I am about Walcott now being out injured.

Got to agree Mike - when Rooney can replicate his club form when he plays for England - then he should be an automatic choice,
But he has to prove himself and more importantly his temperament before he is picked

No I didn't watch it, but to end up drawn after extra time in the 1/4 finals is at least an honourable (if unfortunate) finale.  With Gernany's current form we would likely to have been hammered embarassingly had we made the semi's.

I WATCHED THE GAME FROM THE EDGE OF MY SEAT.I MUST SAY ROONEY IS ONE OF THE LAZIEST PLAYERS I HAVE EVER WATCHED PLAY.How do you expect to win a game if all you can do is defend. I expected a lot more from a bunch of over payed athletes. I was pulling for England but they lacked effort & skill & had great trouble making 2 complete passes in a row. It will be Spain & Germany in the final & will depend on the ref,if he calls a good game Spain will win. Mick B.

You thought they did well,....methinks you must have Rose Tinted Specs, they were battered for most of the match, but they defended well, and only had 2 shots on goal, and had they won on penalties...it would have been the greatest bit of highway robbery, ever,....but they did,nt,and thats all the matters,

We went into this with low expectations and exceeded them so fairly happy.
Some of our younger players do seem to have a good future ahead if they can fulfill their promise.
I wasn't keen on Carroll till these games but he plays a good old English No9.
I am glad we didn't get through as:
Italy were the better team but couldn't beat us in free play.
Would hate to think what playing the Germans would have been like, they have won ALL their matches in the competition so far.
I will watch Germany / Italy on Thursday then the Final, possibly Spain / Portugal too.

I will watch Germany / Italy on Thursday then the Final, possibly Spain / Portugal too.

Bob

Totally agree with you Bob. Well said. :-))

Hi guys, we all missed the note from Martin that he is quiting model boat building. Martin you can't be serious, the world of model boat building will never be the same if that happens, say it is not true please & you never answered my email on the Smit Nederland, do I have a tug or not ?. Mick B. PS = Guys put lots of pressure on Martin to continue his building, even buy him some kits that he can't resist building if necessary, just don't let him quit.Lets have a big push to stop this foolish thinking.

Back to football here. 1. I thought it was a very clean game & there was no diving. 2. I also thought the officials called a very good game. Yes in the end Italy was the better team on the day but you must admire the tremendous English defence, especially Terry & midfielder Gerrard, they have nothing to be ashamed of. I wish Rooney would take a page from these guy's book & put out a little more effort  for his team.

The usual result then.

Bob

If England had beaten Italy they would have played Germany next.

Had that happened the USA had announced that they had planned to turn up at half time and take all the credit.

The chap who impresses me most is Roy the manager. He seems intelligent and articulate and might even be as good an England manager at the best one we never had. But I do agree that Rooney seemed a bit of a waste of space.

Now that is why I like football so much.
Germany was cruising to the final not dropping a point even in qualifying.
Italy couldn't score against England in open play but Germany haven't beaten Italy in there last 6 meetings.
Italy gave the German defence so many worries and the Italy long ball finally paid off with Balotelli having a superb game.
Such a good game for a neutral (well nearly) to watch.
SUPERB.

Now it's Spain vs Italy does the winner have its euro debt written off by Sky TV?
Just a thought...............

I agree completely, Bob. I thought that Germany were certainties to make the final but, in the end, the score line flattered them. Italy could, and perhaps should, have scored at least 3 more goals while Germany looked pedestrian by comparison.

I'm really looking forward to the final.

Peter.

But did you know wullie, The Scottish FA has suggested that perhaps in the future England and Scotland field a joint team. The English FA have responded and made the following statement, “Yes we are completely rubbish, but not that rubbish.”

and

‘What do you call a Scotsman in the first round of the World Cup?’
The referee.

Knorr has released a special Scottish football edition – it’s called laughing stock.

‘What have Scottish teams and a three-pin electrical plug got in common?’ They’re both useless in Europe.

What does a Scottish fan do after his team have beat anyone half-decent? Turns off his Playstation 3.

The Scottish team were arrested at Glasgow airport this morning, and charged with impersonating a football team.

Well all I was half right, I forecast Germany & Spain for the final & that Spain would win.Spain were poetry in motion, I felt sad for the Italians they were made to look ordinary, which they are not, just not up to the Spanish standard, What a team to watch, they were making history. Mick B.

In our little village, in Andalusia, the main road was closed and the match shown on TV in the bars. It was also shown on a big screen in the street. The place was packed and was the best atmosphere I have ever experienced at a football match. The victory was well deserved and the people partied through the night.

Not a policeman was seen, no fighting, swearing or any other agro witnessed. Mums and grandmas with babies were happily mixing with the revellers. A brilliant night was had by all. Viva España!  :-)) %%

    Latest Score

Agius 1    Diamond 0

Agius scored a resounding re instatement after a determined push by the Barclays  defence, and the sending off of their crafty number one amid rumours of match and score fixing.

Rumours that M&G United are very interested in securing this undoubtedly talented forward's services are rife, and our sources will announce an update to this intriguing development during the second half of this FIXture.

Good for you, after all, any Recording showing Scotland even playing in the World Cup or European Cup would be a rarity. Quite likely only in black and white as it would have been that long ago...
