Title: computer advice please !
Post by: mermod on June 17, 2012, 09:36:05 am
I'm hopeing someone in mayhemland can help me, I often connect my pc to my hd television for watching movies etc, my current hdmi cable slots nicely into my pc and my telly and when I plug it i select projector mode on the pc, my current cable is 1 metre long, however I have just run a new 10 metre cable from one side of the room through the roofspace in an attempt to neaten up the lounge but I cant get it to work, the computer makes the usual bing bong sound to say ive plugged a cable in but I get no picture on the telly, from what i have googled I dont think 10 metres is to long for a hdmi cable, hopefully one of you guys can help?

Hi there, this is Tugs son. If you're sure everything is connected up properly then there shouldn't be a problem. There isn't a problem with it being 10m long, I would suggest plugging your 1m cable back into the tv and your laptop to check to see if that is still working. If that is working then there should be no reason for the 10m cable not to work. It could be a number of things, firstly it could just be the cable, secondly, some HDMI cables have little switches on the connectors of the cable, if your cable has a switch then try the different settings, thirdly, there should be a button on your laptop which changes the output from your laptop, you usually have to hold down the Fn key to activate it but it's worth a try. I would also suggest double checking the output from the tv, making sure you have the correct output channel selected.

Thanks for the replies guys, 1m cable still works just fine, no switches or anything on the 10m , definately the correct input source chosen on the telly, after plugging the cable into the computer the display options in settings shows 2 monitors available one being the laptop screen and the other says sony tv so it seems to know the tv's there but just won't show any picture, as soon as the wife has finished watching the voice i will try plugging a dvd player in just to try and rule out a faulty cable oh and I tried playing with the resolution settings on the pc but still no luck

If it works perfectly with the 1 m cable but not the 10m then you definitely have a faulty cable. Return it for a new one. These things do happen occasionally..

Perhaps not, I've had an electrician here putting in powerpoints etc and he was the one that ran the cable stating he did this sort of thing all the time but I had to getthe cable, not a problem, but now that I look really closely at the cable I noticed a small sticker  with arrows that seem to indicate signal direction, tried plugging everything in the other way roud, works perfectly, great , not me, not the cable, just the installation, will have a bit of a chat to the sparky tomorrow, thanks to all those that offered solutionsm, am I the first to be caught out by a backward hdmi cable?

Looking at HDMI specs, there is a set of wires connecting "send" terminals at one end the "receive" terminals at the other, and another set going the other way.  The basic cable, like and old time RS232 cable, needs a crossover connection.  An extension cable would not.  If a basic cable was not fully connected, it would have a distinct "send" end, and a "receive" end.  Fully connected, it wouldn't matter, but a cable without the full connections only has a path one way, and if its connected the wrong way, there is no path.

So its possible that its made as a 1 way lead to save money (Less wires needed) and as an aside less weight

Just so, much the same as SCART, only using plugs that you can plug in without shoving the unit off the shelf.  The article I read noted that the signals were good for a 10 metre cable before needing regeneration to overcome signal degradation.

OK a quick heads up after looking in our stores

looked at 2 different Long (5M) HDMI leads we had in stock and the cheapest one is one way as it is marked "IN" and "OUT" on the connectors

The Sony one we have is labeled "Bi-Directional" on the packaging and 4 times the price of the other.

Looks like its a case of buyer beware!

Amazing what you learn here.

I have  only plugged in 5 different HDMI leads, including those supplied with equipment & those purchased from Amazon, but have never heard of this. More importantly I would not have thought of this if one had failed to work.

Are one way HDMI leads common?
